This episode was the point where Capaldi officially took his place as my favourite Doctor. Spending 10 minutes ranting about how war is bad while not only not coming across as preachy and sanctimonious, but also landing with a hefty amount of emotional weight is a difficult challenge, and he manages it so well. And it's even more poignant given that it aired the day before Remembrance Sunday, and just a week before a devastating terrorist attack in Paris. I have issues with this two-parter, but that speech is such a magnificent way to end everything. Also, the Doctor's Union Jack parachute is almost certainly a reference to the opening sequence of "The Spy Who Loved Me", and as a James Bond fan that makes me very happy

Literally same. This was the moment when he became my favorite doctor.

9:55 "Why American?" - Capaldi's riffing on the TV host Hughie Green, who presented the hugely popular _Double Your Money_ and _Opportunity Knocks_ between the 1940s-70s, and two of his catchphrases appear in this scene ("It's make-your-mind-up time" and "I mean that most sincerely"). Although English, Green had picked up a vaguely "American" twang after living in Canada.

This is one of those channels that I love reading comments on because I find out all kinds of interesting things! I knew he had to be imitating someone, but had no clue who (being that I'm American and born in the 80s).

@Heather Stephens That is, yes! Thank you! If you search Bekah Is All That Jazz, there's a video of me on a friend's channel from 9 years before that one on the same stage, same song, same KJ. 160 pounds heavier.

Not sure how this would've went if Capaldi wasn't the Doctor for this episode. Splendid acting.

it wouldnt work there is not any of the other doctors who COULD do it, they dont have the age or experience to pull it off. (the actor Sylvester McCoy might be able to do it, he IS a shakespearian stage actor, among other things, but the character, no!)
@authorofone
@authorofone 3 года назад
I think it’s partly the accent. It allows him to be deep and seething while being extremely loud, which no other Doctor possessed (unless Tennant wants to make it canon that 10 just put on an “average” English accent so Rose could understand him better)

@@julieeverett7442 Honestly Matt smith could pull this off. David tenet especially.
@julieeverett7442

@@damythicalpanda9190 I've seen more of Davids work now, alright maybe he could, not as well as Peter, this is HIS but maybe. Each doctor has something that belongs to them ,Akhaten belongs to Matt, no one could match his heartbroken fury, Davids speech about the man who never would belongs to him (among other things the others all HAVE) The zygon speech belongs to Peter, and so does this

two words ONE TAKE!!! Peter did the war speech in one take and the crew around him were in tears, look at Gemma you can see her tears too. I always enjoyed Peter Capaldi, we finally have a classic era doctor in modern who and his face finally matches his age, there is only one episode coming that is better than this but he didnt do THAT in one take. One of the best speeches not just in dr who but modern television full stop!

One thing that makes this 2-part even more powerful is something I've noticed hasn't really been noticed or at least addressed. In the 50th Anniversary special it was revealed that the Zygon homeworld was collateral damage and had been destroyed early on in the Time War. In a tangential way, the Doctor is responsible for all this.
@taladavidson5400
@taladavidson5400 3 года назад
the zygon two parter is the exact middle of capaldi’s run, and in many ways, in the themes it explores, it’s the heart of his era; an anti-war story dealing with consequences from the past, culminating in a beautifully delivered speech that’s captivating and emotional in a way only capaldi can do. off topic, but the amount of great episodes in S9 is unbelievable. yet another fab two parter. (let’s ignore the episode that comes next lmao).

I remember a lot of people said how amazing "the war" speech and later when watching it, fully understand why. To this day, that speech still resonate to my heart. Definitely one of best speech ever being said in DW.

That speech is the soul of the Doctor laid bare. It's everything the character is, and everything the character believes, condensed into a few minutes of astonishing acting. Better than that, it's television that actually matters. The show at its very best

I mean what can you say. I mean it feels like another lighter episode and then the tone change. The Zygon committing suicide onwards gets darker and real. Everything builds towards everyone coming together in the Black Archive. Then the best speech in new Who. I mean that speech is something else the power, emotion, truth and observations are on point. A message we should all listen too. I loved Capaldi from the start and this was him at his best. His finest hour had come and he wasn't done yet. Yes the two parter does have some issues and I don't care. You don't realise what you had until its gone. Gone it has.

This two part episode is the story that I recommend to people who have never watched Doctor Who before. Capaldi's dialogue in the Black Archive is my favorite in all of the series. Also a stellar performance by Jenna Coleman playing two parts in this story. Osgood is probably my favorite almost-companion of all time. Stay safe everyone!

For the next two-parter I'm gonna wait until Part Two has been uploaded to watch Part One so that I can subvert the "it's been longer for you than it has for us" narrative! I feel it's what the Doctor would have wanted! #timey-wimey!

If the treaty has already resulted in near-catastrophe 15 times in the TWO YEARS since it went into effect, maybe it's time to renegotiate the treaty? Or at least come up with alternate means of enforcing it? :)

I didn't like the way the zygons were portrayed the best thing out of this episode was when Kate Stewart says 5 rounds rapid which is a call back to the brigadier I like that and the doctors war speech which although I'm not an emotional person that scene moved me.

The Ninth Doctor would have been played by a black actor. Star Trek DS9 debut in 1993 with the first black captain in the franchises history. The Tenth Doctor would have been female due to Star Trek Voyager

Series 8 really worked for me as awkward as it was. Series 9 in general was one that I fast lost much affection for. And this two parter just bored me. I was feeling totally disengaged from it. I'd need to think more about the speech but since I lost interest I don't really care to. It's very idealistic and naive on a surface level. It assumes that both sides are reasonable. The problem I've seen some people raise is that the episode was at great pains to establish the terrorist Zygons as essentially ISIS (the flag couldn't be more blatant) and it suggests they can just be shouted at and told how bad they are and they'd go "oh yeah, you're right". Nice ideal but the reality of such a scenario is that they would just kill you. It's a Kangaroo court scenario. Bonnie is a mass-murderer and is just let off... It wants to be an impressive speech but it doesn't really stand up to much scrutiny in the analogies that it's aiming for. The heart of it appeals though.
