for maki and megumi to become second cousins, they need to share the same great-grandparent, which is not possible because they are not even on the same generation (i.e., maki's great-grandparent would be megumi's great-great grandparent). if maki would have a child, that child would be megumi's second cousin. so the point stands. maki's father and toji's father are siblings, which means maki and toji share the same grandparent, which in turn makes them first cousins. therefore, it is toji and maki who are in the same generation, which means maki is megumi's second aunt, not second cousin. note: second aunt and second cousin are not the same. as mentioned, second cousins share the same great-granparent. on the other hand, a second aunt is a female first cousin to one parent. edit: basically, for you to be cousins with anyone, you need to be in the same generation with them. that itself disqualifies maki and megumi as cousins. maki is megumi's aunt.
