You don’t hear Dr. Rand Paul, called doctor all the time and he is a real doctor.

Calling her a Doctor is like calling Hunter a Pharmacist.

As a Medical Doctor, I have been on flights when the Air Attendants have asked “is there a Doctor on the plane?” I’m a family medicine doc, I raise my hand, but if there’s another doc - Cardiologist, and it’s a heart thing, we work together. I have been on a flight where a PhD in English Lit raised their hand. I sarcastically said: “by all means, you take this one”. I was shoved down that isle!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a fan of Jill Biden's, but I have a doctorate of musical arts (DMA). I went through 10 years of college and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to finish that degree. It was from one of the most highly thought of music schools in the country and qualifies me to be a college professor. I pivoted my career and very well may never be in academia again. I'm doing something now where they certainly don't call me Dr. and they probably don't even much care that I have the degree. That said, it makes me feel good and validates some very hard work when it is aknowledged and I can't fault her for that. Just her taste in men...

Calling Jill Biden a real doctor is like calling Brandon a real president

A PhD does original research. A PhD writes and defends a thesis. A PhD advances the real science in his or her field. In some very easy programs, not much intelligence is required to do these things. I'm sure that many PhDs in education or liberal arts are low in intelligence and low in ability. In the physical and biological sciences, someone with a PhD is usually someone with real expertise that the average person hasn't attained. Some of them still have no common sense, but they have achieved something very worthwhile and deserve the honor of being addressed as "doctor." The notion that we automatically have respect for medical doctors is wrong. Many medical doctors clearly have no common sense. Many medical doctors are just slaves of the bureaucracy that is funded by the drug companies. Many of them haven't had an original thought since their junior year of college. They work hard as residents, but they don't have to do original research or defend a thesis. As residents, some do only what they are told without questioning. When they finish residency, they think that the rest of the world should do what they say without questioning. Real scientists expect to be questioned. They expect to have to defend their ideas on first principles. Many modern doctors learn to offer cookbook answers to half a dozen health problems that they are likely to see on a regular basis. Beyond that, they know nothing. Beyond that, they just refer people to specialists who have a different set of cookbook answers to offer. There are good medical doctors and bad PhD professionals, but people who refuse to see those who have earned a PhD as equally deserving of honor for their achievements are ignorant and foolish. Your words may appeal to people who are stupid, but propagating that ignorance does nothing to make society better.

My husband has a PhD in electronics and engineering degree as well as a degree in Biomedical Engineering… but he does NOT want anyone to call him Doctor

I have physician friends and acquaintances who are not addressed as Doctor in non-professional settings, at parties for instance, who don't call themselves doctors and don't resent not being called such.

A PhD candidate usually has six to seven years in under grad and graduate university programs in their field of study. I clearly understand not all Dr titles mean MD.. some are DDS dentists etc. Has Dr Biden ever represented herself as an MD? Or in any medical field? If she put in the study,met the curriculum standards,was awarded a doctorate why should she not be entitled to use it? Or any person that's earned it for that matter? Surely even you can get that idea Megan,and I bet you'd be playing that card too if you had it.

This is unfair. The word "doctor" is not only relevant to *medical* doctors, as you well know. You may not appreciate her doctorate degree in education, but she earned it, and it's hers. If she was working as a professor in a college of ed, she would appropriately be referred to as "Dr. Biden" on campus. As I was and would be if I were still teaching, with my PhD in anthropology. To my knowledge, the only PhD-level terminal degree that *doesn't* result in the holder being called "Dr" is law... is that what this is about? You have a JD but you're not also called "Doctor"....?

We had a few in engineering. Most were great to work with & never asked to be called "doctor". Those who did never really did anything!

I used to work w/ an older gentlemen that insisted on being called Dr. He had it in his email signature, LinkedIn profile etc yet no one seem to know what he was a Dr of. I refused to play along and would just call him Carl. Needless to say he hated me. 😂

Don't get your knickers in a knot MK - BUT medical 'doctors' not so long ago were barbers. The term 'Doctor' was an honorific for a person who adopted the Hippocratic Oath and had gained ANY of a wide range range of lower-level degrees, mostly two Bachelor level degrees. The Bachelor of Medicine (MB) along with a Bachelor of Surgery (BS) combined as an MB BS, which allowed you to practice as a 'Doctor' after sufficient time in hospitals doing practical 'terms' in various medical disciplines. Now the requirements are essentially the same but the graduating double Bachelor's degree has been converted (by most) universities into a single 'Doctor of Medicine' (MD). However, the honorific is meant to recognize the equivalence of an MD to a real Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD). Not the other way around. The PhD has primacy and some MD and MB.BS degree holders still aspire to do the research and teaching necessary also to achieve a PhD. The PhD is the Gold Standard for the title 'Doctor'. For a real PhD, the course of study is usually a three-year undergraduate Bachelor's degree by coursework. Then, if the University considers the graduating marks to be of a sufficiently high standard, the candidate is offered a one-year basic research or advanced coursework and examination degree at Honours level. Then if the candidate's Honours research or advanced coursework is of a sufficiently high level they will be offered a Master's degree (some are so outstanding they go straight from a research Honours degree into a research PhD). Then they seek to go on to a PhD by research and are required to get two scholars, also with PhD's, to offer to Supervise their research for the duration (usually 3 to 6 further years of intensive research). During the period of the research PhD you are mostly required to teach at undergraduate and Masters level in your field. Clearly the dickhead who trivialized Dr. Biden's Ed.D, which is is a PhD equivalent, has not one single kindergarten clue what the hell she is talking about. Dr. Biden's Ed.D way out qualifies most medical Doctors in terms of sheer academic rigor and the ancient lineage of a Doctor of Philosphy. Their honorifics happen to be in different fields of professional practice.

Ignorant is bliss. A doctor is a holder of a Phd., or equivalent advance degree. A physician is a holder of an MD degree. She is a doctor because she holds a doctorate. Period. If those who object to this simple, objective fact are too narrow-minded to understand this, well that says more about Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Tucker and those who object to Mrs. Jill Biden using a title which she seemingly right fully earned. People critical of this should focus on matters of substance and not trivial subjects such as this. For your information, the American Bar Association issued a Formal Opinion in 1969, indicating that attorneys holders of a JD can use the title "Dr." in non-legal practice scenarios, such as academia, social, etc. Meg Ryan and Carlson Tucker are both wrong, and misguided. If someone with a Phd or equivalent wishes not to use the title, that is their prerogative, but it is certainly not wrong, not should they be mocked for it. BTW, I am a holder of a doctorate degree, with ten years of college education, 26 years of professional experience, as well as a conservative.

I respect people that have been through the rigor of earning a doctoral degree. I'm a doctoral candidate. To me, the real doctor is the medical doctor. It truly matters. The Ph.D. is honorable, however. You are exposed to so many worldviews, epistemology, ontology, paradigms. I agree that outside of medicine, addressing someone as doctor should be reserved for academia, someone's resume. Don't knock the cerebral, folks.

I'm onboard with your point. But historically, the real doctor idea is inaccurate. The term doctor was originally for academia only. Medical practitioners had to fight to gain the title.

It's a normal thing. In Germany the railroad website asks you if you're a dr when you're buying a train ticket, because the conductor wants to address you in a respectful way. It's just common decency.

I knew of a doctoral student (PhD) who was ABD, but used the title "Dr" prematurely in his signature block. He actually included the erroneous document in the package for review. The MDs on the IRB reviewing the dissertation were offended. As real doctors, they're probably offended that the title is ever used for a PhD or EdD. They, not being happy, considered that as a negative in the final review.

I have a Master's degree in philology, and am working on my Ph. D. of which when completed, I will be 'afforded the title' of Doctor of Philology. Jill Biden doesn't even have a Ph.D. She has an Ed.D - a much less rigorous degree. I worked with some of the most accomplished faculty in the sciences at a major Big 10 university and my colleagues hated being introduced as "Dr." Academics rarely, if ever, want to be called "Dr. _____." This woman, like her husband, is a great pretender. Period.

Im not a Dr. But have many close friends who are. None are addressed as Dr. Except one who had the nickname "Doc" since he was ~10 years old. That reference was related to one of the 7 dwarfs. Maybe Jilly is one of the dwarfs. Married to Sleepy or Dopey. Not quite sure which.

I am one of your fans, but you look silly when you do a segment like this without understanding what you are talking about. You are not alone. There seem to be a lot of people who think that referring to Dr. Jill implies that she is a medical doctor. There is plenty to criticize her for, but not this. My ex-husband after he got 2 PhDs insisted on being called doctor, even my family. Real medical doctors should call their selfs nurse practitioner, because their salary in many areas more than a medical doctor, plastic surgeons excluded

If you are not dealing with the topic of your doctorate, it is not necessary to keep calling a person doctor. Jill does not normally discuss anything that has to do with her doctorate -- she should be called Biden's caretaker.
