I'm a 60 yr old male and my wife has been in poor health for years. I had a full day today of going to pay a bill, filling up the truck, picking up dinner for my elderly mother who has cancer, getting horse feed, getting groceries, making it home and unloading and putting up groceries, pulling around back to unload feed and to feed and water the horses, putting the battery charger on our other truck, cooking dinner, doing laundry, and while washing dishes I was thinking. "What a day" but then I realized mothers around the world have days like this every day. Mothers are special, they provide everything for the family from cooking to comfort. God bless you all.

My brother died from a ruptured spleen. He was an adult, alone in his apartment when he tried to hang up his 10 speed on the wall so he could pull out his bed. So glad your son is ok! This is a reminder to all of us that you need to advocate for your loved ones in the hospital. Don't just take what the ER doctor says, you need to ask questions and seek second opinions! 40 years ago, we were camping at at state park in Indiana and my brother, who was 16 at the time, fell off of a 50 foot cliff. The ambulance took him to a local county ER and they told my parents they needed to amputate his arm, that was his most serious injury, there were multiple other broken bones and head injuries. It was July 4th and the hospital was understaffed. My mom called our pediatrician at her home and told her what was going on. Our pediatrician told my mother "Do NOT let them amputate his arm and get him to Indianapolis ASAP". They took him by ambulance to Methodist hospital in Indianapolis where the Indianapolis Pacer's orthopedic doctor worked. He saved my brother's arm. He spent over a month in the hospital, but he is still alive and has both arms!
@olympiakallman3561
@olympiakallman3561 Год назад
I so totally agree! Seems I am the advocate for our family. I'm so happy your brother is well and with both arms. I believe they use the term "doctors practice," because they do! They practice until they get it right! I had a serious condition where they told me to get my affairs in order. That was back in 2011. I am very well several years later with no signs of any disease. Please never take any doctor's opinion as "the word of God." They try to do their best. And at times, they need to slow down a little and check all options amongst their colleagues before they recommend amputation!

Hi Megyn, I am so glad your son had a good outcome. I am an Interventional X-Ray Technologist. I scrub into procedures with the Radiologists that do those special procedures. I was so grateful to hear you talking about our specialty. Very few people know what we do in our department. It's quite spectacular really. We can access the body's vascular system with a needle and sheath with a valve, we can fix things that are bleeding or open things that are blocked. I love what I do. There are lots of reasons you become more conservative with age. Paying taxes for one. Children is another. You also start seeing how the real world works and realize that everything should have a cost benefit analysis, everything is a compromise, there will always be trade-offs, there are always unintended consequences, these are all things Democrats think are ridiculous and silly. The Democrats and the far left they like to go with academic models. Lots of things work great in a laboratory. The real world is much more complex. Thomas Sowell talks about this all the time and has written many books about it. The difference in conservatives and liberals. Conservatives live in the real world! I'm happy to hear your son is going to be okay. I'm a RN and have been taking care of a brittle diabetic for the past few months. This patient acquired diabetes when part of his spleen was removed. Therefore the typical hypoglycemic symptoms did not manifest themselves in the usual ways. It was very frustrating as a nurse when one minutes is blood sugar was in 200's and less than an hour later he is down to the 50's. Anyway, I'm glad your son Thacker is okay and won't have to deal with that. Sometimes the spleen will tear after a minor fall in little kids if they have an infection. That happened to my niece years ago and she is just fine today.

First I’m so grateful that your sweet boy is okay. 6 years ago I lost my 35 year old son when he was hit head on by a drowsy driver. His spleen was absolutely destroyed and was his brain. It was so hard watching him go, but he had no way of living. God protected your son by providing good nurses and doctors, and parents who like you who can remain calm in terrible situations. God Bless.

Megan, my daughter had several severe problems, (birth defects, antibody deficiency), so we had numerous hospitalizations. Hearing you brought a lot of it back. I slept in her hospital rooms. I was a partner in her medical care. I learned everything I could about her situations. Now, she is a supervisor of an ambulance company. So, I'm glad you learned about that radiologist and that you were able to make the good decisions that you did. My best to your son.

I’m a retired firefighter/EMT with 48 years experience. We trained on falls as anything over 6 feet is traumatic, potentially fatal. Spleen injuries can occur from falls, auto accidents, fights and other frontal or left side strikes. The initial paramedic was correct with the IV and possibly pain medication because he could be in a bit of shock and the adrenaline dump from all this excitement might mask pain. The hospital personnel did everything right and I’m sure they have seen this injury many times. Children manage injuries better than we older folks and really are better patients.

So what does a spleen do and what do you have in place of your spleen now? Since you were so young, do they have to keep installing new, bigger spleens? What changes or precautions do you now have to make ever since your spleen was removed? What was wrong with your spleen and how did the Doctor who survived the Death Camps figure it out? What were your symptoms? Have you had a good life since? Have you ever wished that things went differently?
@magentared5822

@@aFoxyFox. The spleen assists other organs, but isn't essential to maintain life. It helps the lymph and immune systems in the body, to filter blood, make new blood cells and prevent infection. My own little Great niece, aged 5, had a very sudden and unexpected liver failure the week before Christmas 2023. She was admitted to Kings College hospital here in London UK, where they have one of the best paediatric liver units in the UK. A donor was needed and thanks be to God one became available fairly quickly. We cannot ever express our gratitude to the donor family who so generously gave our little Princess the gift of life, even though they must have been grieving greatly for the loss of their own child. Megyn, my son was also 8 when he ruptured his spleen! He fell on his skateboard and hit a curb with his belly. He immediately had pressure and pain and said he was having trouble breathing. The first hospital also couldn’t treat him so off in the ambulance we went to a trauma one center close by (luckily) I wasn’t afraid of all the CT scans as my son is now 34 and happily married with his second baby due any day now and we didn’t understand the radiation risks. But when they hung blood bags for him in ambulance and made me sign he may have to be on anti rejection drugs the rest of his life i panicked. Luckily he didn’t need it and had to stay in ICU for days. Bleeding stopped and spleen completely healed with no future problems. So don’t worry he will go on to have a wonderful life!❤️

HE AND MY PRIMARY DO AT THE TIME HAD SAID FROM THAT DAY ON THAT I MUST HAVE HAD IT FOR YEARS AND NOT KNOWN IT. WHICH WAS IMPOSSIBLE BECAUSE I HAD MY SON EIGHT YEARS BEFORE THAT AND HE WAS A 10LB 6OZ BABY. THERE WASN’T ANY ROOM LEFT IN MY BODY FOR ANYTHING ELSE BUT WHAT I WAS BORN WITH AND MY SON! IT TOOK THREE MORE MONTHS OF OUT OF CONTROL PAIN IN MY ABDOMEN, AND SLEEPING ALMOST SITTING UP IN BED, AND ONLY BEING ABLE TO HOLDIN ABOUT 3OZ OF FLUIDS AT A TIME BEFORE MY NEXT APPOINTMENT WITH MY SURGEON. HE DID ONE MORE CAT SCAN THEN FINALLY DECIDED TO GO IN TO REMOVE THE CYST. HE SAID THAT IT’S HIS INTENT TO JUST REMOVE THE CYST AND SAVE THE SPLEEN. BUT HE SAID IF IT GETS A BLEEDER, I COULD LOOSE THE SPLEEN. THE DAY OF MY SURGERY, IT TOOK MUCH LONGER THAN THEY SAID IT WOULD TAKE. THE PAIN WAS INCREDIBLE!! BUT DIFFERENT THAN WHAT WAS THERE THAT MORNING. LATER I STARTED WITH A FEVER AND THAT DIDN’T GO DOWN FOR 9 DAYS (I GOT A STAPH INFECTION). I HAD TO GO BACK TO SURGERY AGAIN TO HAVE THE INFECTION SCRAPED OUT. HE ALSO NICKED MY PANCREAS WHEN HE WAS QUICKLY TRYING TO GET THE SPLEEN OUT. IT TOOK YEARS TO BE “OK”. I’M SO HAPPY THAT YOUR HUSBAND IS FINE AND EXTREMELY HAPPY TO HEAR MEGYAN’S SON IS BETTER. MY DAD AND HUSBAND SAT BY MY SIDE! I KNOW WHAT THEY WENT THROUGH! I read of your experience & when you said how he was at the beginning, I just thought “Oh no, not his face (which could lead to issues in his mouth, teeth, etc.).” Would not have said or appeared worried though if I had been with you. Just not knowing how bad it is and seeing what medical people are doing is not pleasant, either. Though this time your child was not as ill as another’s does not mean you are not going through all the same feelings. I even later will have post-traumatic thoughts of how this could have been so much worse. So I think you did great. I believe in God and faith is always a part of my illnesses, but I still have to go in a closet, stick a towel in my mouth, and let it out. You did great. I'm a single mom. Was working at Walmart when my daughter, 17 at the time, had to have emergency surgery for a blockage in her stomach/small intestine. We left at 6 am to the nearest ER and by 9 am she was in surgery across town at the children's hospital. She had started to go into shock and organs were starting to shut down. She had a 2 week stay in that hospital recovering from the surgery. I couldn't afford to totally take off work, so luckily my mom and sister took turns staying at the hospital with my daughter during the day when I was at work. I also had pets at home that needed care. Walmart fired me a few months later because my daughter required follow up care that meant sometimes I was late getting to work. Best thing they could have done for me really. It led to my job I have now.

most employers do NOT care about your problems that includes serious medical emergencies for your young children. The importance of covered leave to care for immediate family members must be addressed, the family leave available isn't enough. Showing your vulnerability and sharing your family personal struggles are appreciated with your words of wisdom

Omg, you were so fortunate that an ambulance was called. Most people would not have if they are feeling ok. You are so strong. Most people would not have been able to focus on anything else, but you still did what needed to be done for the show. You are an inspiration. Thank you G-d for everything.

We tend to make our decisions emotionally rather than logically, and your not being a fan until she displayed emotion about a personal situation is evidence of that. The word "fan" is a bit strange with regard to a journalist, but I'll go with it. I have been a fan because she is an excellent reporter. She is intelligent, inciteful. covers stories well and asks excellent and probing questions. I suspect the fact that she is not a glaring liberal affects your assessment of her as a journalist.

Agreed, I thought the same thing. We all care for our kids above all else (Well, the vast majority). Things like this remind me about that. I might not agree with a persons politics and/or beliefs, but deep down, we are all exactly the same. Glad the little guy is ok, mine is 22 and I'll feel the same way till the day I die.

As a doctor who has practiced medicine for 30 years I can offer some perspective. Most doctors, even at smaller hospitals, are quite competent. The transfer to a larger, acute care hospital was appropriate, and was, I am sure, initiated by the initial treating physician. Once there, under the care of competent ICU doctors and nurses, and consultation by a surgeon, he was quite safe. There is also time for consideration of options. That is when many people begin eliciting opinions, which is what you did. Remember, however, that doctors distant from the situation do not have the advantage of direct observation, and the attending surgeon is still in the best position to make appropriate care decisions. While it is best for a child to retain his spleen if possible, to ensure immunity from encapsulated bacteria, all decisions are on a risk benefit basis. Also, a person who has a splenectomy, if properly immunized, live normal lives. The risk of hemorrhage on a plane en route to a hospital that has an interventional radiologist on staff seems to me to outweigh the risk of the consequences of a splenectomy, and any movement could precipitate more bleeding. A pediatric specialist was not required in this case and though a nice addition, was not a reason for transfer. The risks of transfer far outweighed the potential benefits. Once that was established, monitoring for bleeding with the plan to perform a splenectomy immediately if indicated, was the way to go. Good decision making.

I've met several doctors who were incompetent. Malpractice is one leading cause of death in this country for a reason. I've seen nurses and doctors do and say things that would blow your mind, as someone with a battery of health issues and conditions. I've been to clinics, specialists and ERs a million times over. Like the time my mom was hemorragig from her anus (defecating large amounts of blood). The ER nurse lost her blood sample, lost her urine sample. Nobody measured the amount of blood coming out (there was enough to make me think she was on the verge of dying) and somehow she survived that because...they literally released her just a couple hours later. With no follow up testing, with no answers and didn't even ask if she stopped bleeding..I'm not kidding. I've had other terrible experiences. I no longer trust doctors or nurses. They have missed serious health symptoms of mine over the years that I had to research myself, only to be diagnosed with after repeatedly begging them to listen. Now I have chronic kidney failure because they kept telling me my heart symptoms were in my head. No, my blood pressure was extremely high. Every time I went in to get it checked,I was told it was anxiety. Guess what? I have kidney damage now and I'm still young. That's not the only thing. And I've shopped for doctors. I've left ones that didn't seem competent, ones that were neglectful. I have no patience anymore. Education does NOT mean a person is smart or competent at the work they do. Doctors are the ones who taught me this valuable life lesson.

So glad things worked out for your son. That must have been so traumatic. You should also thank the initial emergency response team members who took the lead in organizing the appropriate follow-up despite the fact your son initially seemed to be okay. They really were a major part of that positive outcome too. Happy New Year and best of health to your entire family, especially little Thatcher!

As a retired firefighter/paramedic I can tell you the treatment from start to finish with excellent care from the paramedics to the hospitals and their staff, your son received outstanding care. I e seen way too many patients that medical staff blew off as minor injuries when in fact the person was in dire straights. Glad every worked out and I’m thrilled that he got the best care possible. Great story.
