What separates the great Mehdi Hassan Saab from his predecessors and the rest of his contemporaries was the fact that he had single-handedly revived ghazal gayiki as a 'Classical Music Form', further developed it by applying his midas touch and catapulted it into the present level of its much wider acceptance across the globe. In doing so, he had maintained absolute control over Labz, Sur, Taal and Loy all along and had never ever compromised on purity of ragas. In this way, the great Khan Saab had brought in a paradigm shift in the traditional style of ghazal gayiki by making it more refined, soothing, soulful, lively, lyrical and worth-listening and thereby reestablshed its pride of place as a 'Classical Music From' by protecting it successfully from the onslaught of rampaging Western Influences. Thus, the great Mehdi Hassan Saab was like a Vanguard in the World Of Ghazal Gayiki. Therefore, he doesn't merit any comparison with any other ghazal singer! Is there anyone -- living or dead -- to match his caliber and brilliance! To be very frank, he was 'MOSIKI'(MUSIC) personified and'MOSEKAR'(MUSICIAN) par excellence! one of the best ghazals I have listened to, my eyes get moist when I remember My Daddy, My Uncle and their friend used to listen to this masterpiece in the early seventies on a small mono tape recorder and still enjoy it to the maximum, Great people, great ghazal.
Yes amarendra bhai you are abs right .he wasthe master of masters .At the time hindustani classical was losing its appeal due to onslaught of western music and culture he arrived on the scene in around 1950 first with film music and very soon popularised the present form of gazal as we listen today .He single handedly catapulted our music and gazal to prima donna position .This was because of his exceptional skill with ..as you say ..लय सुर ताल और स्वर .He probably ruled the scene till 90s ..काश कि हम उन्हें प्रत्यक्ष सुन पाते
He came with his ghazal on radio karachi first time in 1952 then in 1956 sang first time for film the song was" jis ny mere dil ko dard diya". After that he continues with both film singing and ghazal singing till 1983...in 1983 he left film industry..
Today, the 13th June, is indeed the 7th Death Anniversary of the great Mehdi Hasan Saab ! In the year 2012, precisely on this date, the great Khan Saab had left this world for good for his heavenly abode ! My heartiest regards and tribute to him ! May the departed soul rest in eternal peace ! No one is anywhere close to Maestro's level! Repeat no one ever composed and sung like Late Mehdi Hassan. Each one Ghazal is a treat to ears and soul! I fell in love with Ghazal because of his rendition. Did not understand anything but loved his voice. later started learning Urdu words.
