Reminds me of the Karpov quote "I didn't want to attack. But the position demanded that I attack." Too bad Meier blinked with Ra1.

Excellent analysis again Meier was so close and all the moves that lead to the potential winning position were very logical and relatively easy to see. It must be hard when you’re playing the world champion to find the wind when I’m sure before the start of the game Meier would be happy with a draw. Next time he might be less intimidated by Carlsen as might anyone playing through this game.

Damn, I really looked forward to the checkmate, nonetheless, a great explanation of what goes on in these complicated games that engines don't (can't) tell. Thanks GM!

Exchanging the dark square Bishops is very dangerous in certain openings like the Dutch or French in manylines.

I dunno if I would have found it but I would have tried to. That ending disturbs my chess soul

Very unlucky for Meier.....even if you cant see a win, increasing the pressure on the weakness h7 with the open h-file too is unlikely to be bad. Particularly with the pinned g7 Rook and the Bishop that can come to f5. Ah well Magnus breathes again....

"and they agreed on a draw", noooo...what? I thought he had checkmated him! well...why Carlsen always get away like that? :) anyway, thanks Daniel, great coverage as always

@andriimishchenko8284

As for me this is the same story as in game Maguns Carlsen - Gawain Jones at Tata Steel 2018. I believe both Jones and Meier could easily win their games IF they didn't have a world champion sitting in front of them.

I understand how a 2000 player could miss the moves like Rh1 or Rf5, but 2600+ player?
@eyalsegal5003
@eyalsegal5003 6 лет назад
As Daniel explains (following what Meier himself said) he didn't miss *the move* Rh1 itself, but rather something down the line while calculating the variations - that after 39. Rh1 Qe7 40. Rxh7+ Kxh7 41. Rh5+ Kg6, 42. Rh6+! leads to mate. This was all in rather severe time trouble, btw, and according to the joint post-game session with the players Carlsen also missed it.

Dear GM King: Following your suggested 39.Rh1. black can defend with 39...., Bc6. The rook sacrifice then doesn't work, because after 40.Rh7 Kxh7 41.Kg8 the 9th rank is effectively defended by the bishop on c6. So I don't see how GM Meier's fortress can be penetrated. Looks like White would be down at least the exchange, Do you have an answer?
@robertwendel9251
@robertwendel9251 6 лет назад
Sorry. I meant the 8th not the 9th ground being defended.

After 39...Bc6 40 Be6 threatens Rxh7+ and Black has no decent defence.

39. Ra1 is a terrible, terrible move. He threw all the great effort up to that moment into a bin.

Hi Danny. I love your channel, I love your videos. I do have to say I don't like the newest bit of branding on the videos where you identify a somewhat click-baity topic To theme the video with. For my taste, I prefer a more straightforward "game of the day" style coverage. Nonetheless, I love the channel and the content. Thanks for everything.
@PowerPlayChess
@PowerPlayChess 6 лет назад
As you can see, the quality of the content hasn't changed at all. Indeed, videos are now generally longer. The titles are just a bit of fun, and if they bring in more viewers that is good for all of us - it means the channel can keep going!

Daniel King dipped below the prerequisite 2500 to be a GM. However, the rules of FIDE state that once becoming a GM, one is a GM for life. It's a title nobody can take away from him.
@RustyNPiece
@RustyNPiece 6 лет назад
You don't have to have 2500 to BE a GM. You have to reach 2500 Elo ONCE in your career and that is enough to get a GM-title (if you also obtain the norms of course). In my last tournament a GM was playing with 2393. Still far better than me : D
