Glad I was able to get a dozen or so landings there. I have only one photo of my bird parked on the ramp. Will cherish that at least. A loss for a great city. Still can't believe it.

When I started on MSFS I used to love starting at Meigs in the sim. The perfect airport for practicing traffic patterns and touch and go's. It was a dream of mine that I would be able to one day that cockpit view from the sim into real life but unfortunately by the time I obtained my PPL Meigs was closed. This was a gateway to the city where I was planning to brings friends and family to enjoy the city for a few days.

Last October I did my main cross country flight so far, It was to Chicago from Arkansas in a Cessna 150 but instead Meigs field I went to Schumberg and Lake in the hills, too sad if I think landing in Meigs was my biggest dream when Flight Simulator was my only option for flying, those days meigs were the main place where I did many many hours of FS practice. Visiting Chicago I walked all around the park hoping some day meigs could be re open Cheers from Chile

Sends a shiver down my spine. I never had any emotional attachment to an airport apart from of course Meigs Field. Was introduced to it like so many others from the early flight simulators but for it to be gone for good is tragic to say the least. A cultural icon killed. : (

As a result, Chicago also lost the services of a Coast guard chopper that had been stationed at Meigs to safeguard boaters.

Some politicians are trying to do this here in São Paulo - Brazil, with Campo de Marte airport dated from 1920, the first airport in São Paulo, to build a train station in the area... So sad to see airports going away! Pilots and Hangar owners are toguether here fighting for the airport! Hope we succeed! Greetings from Brazil

I flew in and out of Meig's on charters a few times, it was the most scenic of airport surroundings that I have ever experienced. Personally, I'm glad that was closed down. It was always meant to be a public place as envisioned by Daniel Burnham and Edward Bennett. One of Chicago's greatest assets is it's public parks, no other big city in the world can boast of almost of it's waterfront being public beaches and parks (almost 26 miles). Executives flying in and out of Chicago still have 3 airports to chose from, they just have to spent 35 to 55 minutes travel time to and from downtown like the rest of the unwashed public does.

I doubt this opinion gets much traction here, but it's undoubtedly the correct opinion. We're biased as pilots, so we don't truly calculate the social utility of the facilities we use compared to what they could be used for. Meigs made downtown noisy(er), and the land served less people than it currently does now.

The airport was public too and from I read, the park hardly gets used. I think the mayor should be banned from flying within the US airspace for what he did. Make him drive to Canada before he can fly to his European vacation.

I remember flying my Piper Saratoga into Meigs. We used to land their for the weekend, take in a show, eat, visit the museums, whatever. Then Mayor idiot shut it down illegally. I haven't been back to Chicago, nor have any of the 4 guys I own the plane with. Not out of spite, but lack of convenience. If we're going to send hundreds of dollars in gas, plus hotels and such, why go somewhere and be forced into an inconvenient place? Meigs was in the perfect location for private pilots!

@@ih8thinkingofnames1 Rich people? I worked the night shift at the time like anyone else, didn’t own the company. My uncle owns a plane as well, he was (until he retired) a welder with a couple kids and a stay at home wife. Welders are rich? The difference is I don’t need a new car every 3-8 years (or even every ten), don’t live in a suburb after buying a McMansion, don’t own a bunch of random useless stuff, et al., because I decided I liked flying and made it a priority to own that plane and travel with my family. I didn’t buy a truck (or SUV) to eat gas, and pull an expensive travel trailer. Nope, I bought a plane (and a big tent) using a 20 year loan. Of course owning a plane, that costs less than a truck (or SUV that a soccer mom would buy back then) somehow makes me “rich” in your world. I think we have different definitions of “rich” as I definitely didn’t make (not even close to) make six figures. Not all of us fly jets, in fact people going to Meigs didn’t really fly jets. Most of the planes in the movie where they’re discussing Meigs cost about the same as an SUV at the time. Try again sweets?

@@jessederks8458 Well written, I get fed up with the envious people who criticise those who work hard and earn the trappings of success. It takes a lot of hard effort, sacrifice and dedication to learn to fly but the rewards make it worthwhile. As an office junior back in '72, I calculated that walking home rather than catching a bus would give me another 16 seconds airborne towards my private pilot's licence but I got there after 18 months and have enjoyed nearly 50 years of aviation as a result. I suppose your critic will have a go about using fossil fuels, well I fly gliders nowadays and they cost a few pence to launch for hours of enjoyment. Am jealous of your Saratoga though!

@@ih8thinkingofnames1 It was a public airport that everyone could enjoy. It was a unique airport that was a defining feature of the city. Now its just an park like dozens of others in the area except it is out of the way and underused. All the not-rich people who worked there lost their jobs unexpectedly. And all the not-rich people whose businesses benefited from the travels lost income. All the kids that might have looked to the sky for inspiration to get into engineering and aerospace have one less source of enrichment.

@lerlo There are no residences within two miles or in the flight path. The flight path unlike O'Hare and Midway airports was contained to the lake. The largest aircraft that operated out of there were corporate jets, but much of the traffic was helicopters and general aviation.

Re-open it & leave the airspace class G. It will then become a Light Sport & GA hub. Light Sport/recreational flying is out growing GA in almost every country it exists in. It is rare to have a Light Sport hub that close to a major city, it will be a very unique proposition.

Guess he threatened to bull doze the ballot boxes if he didn’t get his way. Sad state of affair when one person has that sort of power. So he wanted to name the park after his wife, so the park would have been called “cheap and easy park” ?

City Councils, politicians and yes, real estate developers, are quietly moving to do this to medium size airports in a lot of smaller cities in the US. In most cases, they have no interest but heir own, e.g. get re-elected and promote commercial development. They have no interest in the historical value, nor the economic impact their decisions might have. I've seen it among both Democrats and Republicans. Mayor Daley will go down as the "Godfather" of this movement.

The real reason why they closed Meigs Field is because they were getting tired of small airplanes interfering with commercial aircraft flying into and out of O'Hare and Midway.
@mikeham73
@mikeham73 7 лет назад
fishodorvagina That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. They never once used that as an excuse. They got rid of it because they think airports are a "playground for the rich," (I'm not rich and I fly, so I'm not sure where they get that) and they think by making it a park everyone gets to use the land, except no one does. Last time I was there it was empty. Meigs traffic never came close to interfering with traffic at O'Hare and Midway. In fact, getting rid of Meigs only increases traffic at those airports. Last time I went to Chicago I had to use Midway and ride the train downtown. Sure would have been nice to have landed at Meigs and walk to downtown.
@KenKen-ui4ny
@KenKen-ui4ny 6 лет назад
fishodorvagina That's there is like saying the local Chinese restaurant got shut down for serving cat without asking why first, other words it's more myth then reality, especially when Midway has quite a bit of small aircraft traffic it self besides commercial, and occasionally O' Hare dose see a few small airplane landing and takeoffs as well depending on the time of day
@majothelmodasilva2650
@majothelmodasilva2650 5 лет назад
Airports don't like to deal with general aviation traffic. That's a fact. In this instance, however, former Chicago mayor Richard Daley overstepped his authority and closed the downtown airport illegally and on a whim. When airports close, the letter "X" is painted on the runway. Daley had giant "Xs" actually carved by bulldozers on the main runway rendering it unusable.
@_Tommmmmm_
@_Tommmmmm_ 12 лет назад
No one wants it back besides the few people that are pilots who flew in and out of it or the few pilots that never have been there but want to go. Hardly anyone in Chicago used it except executives. You could go there in the late 90's and early 2000's and you would be extremely lucky to even see activity there. It was almost a tradition for a plane to end up in the lake once a year during the 90's. I don't know why so many people are pissed about it, it really wasn't that great.
@gwarchive
@gwarchive 3 года назад
Nobody's pissed off that the airport is closed; if it's closed by rule then it would just be a disappointment. The problem is the elitist mayor bulldozered Xs on the runways instead of lawfully painting Xs as FAA suggests. As the woman in this video says, this teaches others that people can just sneak into properties and do these things in allegedly the most secure country. At least have some communication. It's not like if the runway's not closed then the world is ending.
@TheChicagoguy
@TheChicagoguy 13 лет назад
Daley's reason was to prevent risk of terrorist breaking into Meigs Field stealing aircrafts and flying them into the Sears Tower and John Hancock buildings. No fly-zones in Chicago. Besides why do we even need that thing anymore
