Meinl Sonic Energy Steel Tongue Drum 

Thanks for the info. The instrument for me, makes me smile and I think this is the key for any healthy relationship between a player and the instrument of choice. After all, is a musical instrument not an expression of personal exploration and creativity? Congrats on the upcoming Meinl, I think you're going to love it, traditional playing or not.

I find that true, I use Timpani Mallets with felt heads and they give the best tones to the steel tongue drums which I play. Too the sound of these Meinl steel tongue drums are somewhat mediocre at best, there are better sounding ones, as with the Manastone steel tongue drums, as well there are worst sounding steel tongue drums though they may look good. Like most instruments from Meinl, they are trying to catch a popular market and thier instruments beside being mostly well made, are somewhat of a gentrified entry level for beginners..... In my opinion.

@@GATELESSNESS Actually I ended up purchasing the Pearl C Akebono, it has soft warm base tones with melodic sound, and then the soft high pitch sounding tongues. Nice. Of course played with the correct mallets. Rubber brings out the sound, but you need to wrap them in thick enough cloth

It's only functional in the sense it's where Meinl puts their logo. If you want to hit it, it does give a plastic sound texture which can be interesting at times.
