Rabbi Elliot Cosgrove wrote a provocative article in 2007 titled "Where Have All the Theologians Gone?" This is the question Shearith Israel rabbi Meir Soloveichik and Mechon Hadar rabbi Shai Held begin with: Why is there so much less public argument about Jewish theology than there was in the middle of the last century? What does this say about contemporary Jewish life? About our synagogues? About our universities? About our interfaith relations? The conversation moves from the sociology of theology to Jewish theology itself. Soloveichik and Held each reflect upon a theologian whose ideas have been a fixture of their own work: Michael Wyschogrod for Soloveichik and Abraham Joshua Heschel for Held. Audience questions then move the discussion through topics metaphysical and political.
The event was filmed on July 30, 2014.

the sound on this thing is messed up. the speakers are under volume / the audience is over miked. get it straight! this stuff is good. but it is blowing my ears out whenever anyone in the audience coughs or laughs.

Yes, I think the coughing guy was right next to the recording mic. Hurts my ears when he coughs.

@@lindakingsbury7843 Absolutely, it's driving me crazy..but the discussion is worthy enough to bear with it, haha, otherwise I'd just quit it. They should've told the cougher to move!

Rabbi Held's opening remarks reminded me of a conversation of many years ago which added a certain Yiddish word to my vocabulary. I asked a friend whose grandfather was a rabbi and author of many books what he would say about a mutual friend who thought of herself as a Jewish Buddhist. My friend thought quietly for a few moments and then said her grandfather would say it was chazerei.

the guy at the end had a very good question and answer, that theology is now learnt through the framework of kabalah. in the litvish yeshivah world they dont know how to deal with this as seen from their moving onto the next question.

Proverb:4:1: Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. Proverb:4:2: For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law. Proverb:4:3: For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother. Proverb:4:4: He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live. Proverb:4:5: Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Proverb:4:6: Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.

This Tikva debates have helped me as a Rabbi very Much, I used to have a lot of Superstition beliefs way into my 30's Theology is the effort to explain the unknowable in terms of the not worth knowing. - H.L. Mencken

How is it possibleIs to claim that the Torah is miSinai if nobody knows where this mt. Sinai is, and the archeology does not have much to show for it? Also we do not have adequate explanation for books of Prophets.

How is it that the Tanakh is never mentioned as the most important center-piece for the discussion of theology?

Be Clear Because they're afraid to follow it. It would possibly mean that R abbinics is found too nonsensical and being a Karaite instead.

@nakedBison69 The WORD became flesh and dwelt among us. 40 years after the crucifixion (the 2nd Exodus), the Torah ceased along with the temple and the Old Covenant age. We are now in the NEW Covenant age of the church which is the vindication of JESUS, who is the fulfillment of the law and prophets.

@nakedBison69 Jesus told Caiaphas that he would "come on the clouds of heaven". This is Hebraic apocalyptic terminology meaning to come spiritually in divine judgement. Jesus wrote the Torah and in 70 AD He closed it down. Now, you go only come to the Father through Jesus not the Torah.

@nakedBison69 When was the last time you made a sin offering to the high priest? The Torah ceased in 70 AD when the Son of Man "came on the clouds of heaven". The WORD was made flesh. The book of Daniel first said the Son of Man was going to "come on the clouds of heaven". Daniel was a Jew. Christ's divinity was already predetermined during Old Covenant Judaism, not Christianity.

Because it's not. Tanakh is not self explanatory and if you only used it, you wouldn't know what it means because it makes no sense by itself.

Abraham Joshua Heschel is good enough for me ;-) Secular Judaism has no theology. Leon Trotsky and his ideology conquered all universities.

Meir Soloveichik is very narrow minded, What need is the Kippa and What sexual Hedonism is he talking about.... Yes Gradmas and Rabbis are afraid of Bible Criticism

I like Rabbi Soloveichik. Rabbi Held seems to be too much in love with the sound of his voice in comparison with the issues he is discussing.
