Who remembers good ole Mel Bartholomew and Square Foot Gardening ? As you can see by the poor video quality this segment was taken from my old Beta machine to VHS, and now digital format. I'd love to hear from any one else who has some of the old series on video tape.

OMG I watched Mel with my dad in the 1980's after(?) I got married. By following his suggestions (and with my dad's help) my Long Island garden was spectacular. My neighbors were so jealous..I had lettuce, eggplants, zucchini, tomatoes, cukes and even corn to name a few. Haven't had a garden since the late 80's, Now in 2012 want to follow his method again-sq. ft. raised bed 7' x 4' this time to start. Will post a picture/video later in the season

He sure is !! I so wish they could re-broadcast all his old shows. I used to tape them all on my old beta machine and watch them when I got home from work at night.

HebrewStudent my Mom has his book somewhere I think. I don’t think I’ve seen it since I went to college in 2010.

@@Blueoriontiger , indeed there was a book and you can still find used copies floating around. It gives all the spacing for the various vegetables.

Mel is great and his SFG method is terrific. His comb-over hair is not fooling anyone that he is bald. I can see why he now always wears a hat.

I have a question let say you use Mel's mix... And put a condo for the worm... Would you have to change the earth after couple of year? Or the worm would be enough for fertilizing ? thanks

How about determenate tomatos grow all their tomatos then ripenin them all at one time. indertemenate tomato plants ripen the tomatos after they've gotten to a certain size. With indertermenate tomatos you can have tomatos all summer. With determenate you have to wait til summer ends then get them all at one time. I don't like determenate tomatos.

Yes, he was incorrect about that. Indeterminate varieties will continue to grow and bear as long as the weather remains viable. Determinate ones grow so big, stop, set their fruit... and then it just hangs there forever and never ripens. The worst part is the best heirloom varieties (meaning tasting best) are all indeterminate. Determinate varieties taste awful... and if you don't catch them when they finally ripen, they over ripen almost immediately.
