He saved my life on a few occasions. Even though I had two fantastic grandfathers, I consider him one of mine, as well. Anyone who can make me laugh until I cry is my hero. I've seen everything, listened to every 2,000 Year Old Man recording. I love that he's still alive and obviously has all his wits about him, good memory, etc. More of Mel is always good for me. I love that he said "every two weeks" tentatively. We all know that our grandparents want to hear from us every day, several times a day, if possible, lol. Just one more thing: FRAU BUCHER! Thanks for this Samantha. My story about your grandfather: when he and your grandmother lived on the Upper East Side, he would occasionally come into my wine store, which for my brother and I was a thrill. He was always charming and funny. Eventually when he came in he would look at us and say " the brothers, the brothers are both here" in his best Mel Brooks voice. to say this was a thrill doesnt begin to describe it. He was a joy. After a while we finally summoned the nerve to ask him about the (in)famous deleted line from Blazing saddled (this was before he started telling the story regularly). He listened an conformed that it was true that they had deleted the line ("relax baby, you is sucking on my arm") and that was the last time we saw Mel Brooks. 🙂 We have all benefitted form him being Mel Brooks.

As a chairmaker I was very disappointed in the "Twelve Chairs". Whats a butt joint? Whats a mortise and tenon? Whats a ladderback? I watched this movie about 'twelve chairs' and by the end I'd learned absolutely nothing about ONE chair. Film making genius my eyebrow. This was as disappointing as watching Blazing Saddles and not seeing a single cowboy on fire , and The Elephant Man who didn't even like peanuts. For only the price of a cup of coffee you can get my video "Two More Chairs than Mel Brooks Twelve Chairs for half the price". And by god by the end of er you can make a chair. Hi, Samantha... I just stumbled upon your channel, and I subscribed. I have a little story about your grandfather, and I wonder if he might even remember this. Decades ago, when The Producers (the musical) was in rehearsals and previews on Broadway, my cousin's wife, Lynne Katz, was sitting at a red light in the Broadway district. It was pouring rain, and crossing the intersection, caught without an umbrella was your grandfather Mel. No cabs in sight... Lynne rolled down her window and said, "Hey Mel, what are you doing in the rain? Would you like a ride?" So, he hopped in and explained that he was in town for the production and had just left rehearsal without an umbrella. Anyway, she had a car-full of friends, and they were headed to a restaurant, so she invited him to join them... and he did! She said he was such a delight (and I think she said he picked up the tab... a real mensch). At the end of the evening, he gave Lynne his personal number and told her to call him for seats to the show. She never did call him, because she didn't want to bother him. But she did have that wonderful story to share! PS. Lynne Katz recently passed away. She was in her 80s. A lovely woman, who always attracted good energy and karma in her life!

What ... on God's green Earth ... What is this "thing", this bizarre confusion people of a certain age have with the words "A couple"? See, "couple", the word "couple" means TWO ... It means TWO and it always has. "I would like a couple of burgers." Means "I want TWO freaking burgers." "Call me in two weeks, means two weeks." -- (That was spoken doing an impersonation of Mel, in my mind). Also, After watching 1:30 I am gleaning that Mr. Brooks wants you to have shorter, but more frequent calls ... Doesn't enjoy sitting on the phone for a long time ... and as he said, he wants to see you in person ... None of this texting and vexting and schmexting nonsense, either ... Now, I will continue watching.

I like to think that they might have crossed paths at some point, maybe at the Brooklyn Navy Yard where my dad was stationed when your grandfather was coming back from the war. Or maybe they went to the same movie theater to see the same picture at the same time. I'm thrilled to have watched this interview this morning, and it's comforting to hear a conversation between two funny, intelligent, film-obsessed people like myself. I, personally, find that such a thing is nearly impossible for me to get directly - in "real life" - since I live in the midwest and seemingly everyone my age or younger has little to no knowledge of or interest in "old" movies. Sometimes it's as if I am a fish desperately searching for water and only when I find something like this conversation and glimpse people like these two do I almost sense myself swimming finally and suddenly I remember that there is water out there somewhere. Which provides some relief, for sure, and for that I am grateful. So thank you so very much for that. Now, however, I will be left to grapple with and reconcile my concerned thoughts about what it says about me that I - as a young, single, heterosexual man with an unquenchable fascination with films and film history - cannot determine without hesitation which of these two I would rather be on a date with. This beautiful, young, funny, intelligent, ambitious woman? Or her hilarious grandfather Melvin!? A paradox inside an enigma of a riddle.

My family's favorite movie has always been Young Frankenstein. We quote it in our daily lives and it is a part of our souls. For me personally, High Anxiety has always been my favorite and I must say underrated. The first time I saw it I was around 10 years old and I've seen it hundreds of times. Around the year 2001, my 6 yr old son was downstairs laughing his butt off for the longest time and when I finally went down to see what was so dang funny, I saw that he had put in my VHS tape of High Anxiety and from that moment on, I knew he was MY son...Oh, my favorite moment is the werewolf scene that Harvey Korman was so brilliant at, my sister's favorite is Dennis and the paper, and my mom's is Nurse Deezil and her sequin hat and cigar scene with the brilliant Dr. Thorndyke. Mel has given our lives the gift of being able to watch the most ridiculous scenarios played out by the most perfect and also ridiculous cast. I wonder if he gets enjoyment thinking about the few people who don't get it and what they must be thinking as they shake their heads and leave the room. Well, those people have failed my test for sure! Your grandfather is a genius and I hope they find a way to attach his head to a robot so he can live forever! Love you Mr. Mel Brooks. Fantastic! 12 chairs is a all time classic watched with my parents at a young age!! Terrific interview.. Glad he's happy & well, please pass along my infinite gratitude.. many of the biggest laughs of my life have been enjoying his humor!! I was privileged to be front row a few years back for Blazing Saddles at Radio City Music Hall... one of these days.. I hope to shake his hand, and thank him for warping my sense of humor to where it is today.. He has always been my family's favorite... and look forward to the rumored History of the World Pt II series!!! Happy New Year wishes to both you and your Grandfather!

Of course there are so many expressions of grandpa Mel’s genius, but it’s the improvisation that leaves my jaw hanging open most frequently. Now. Today. It’s as if a day hasn’t passed. Somehow he and his best friend Carl Reiner created comedy that’s still lighting years later. It’s a gift, and our privilege to share in it. Thank you for this interview.

Such a good interview, so natural and flowed like a conversation. Can't wait to see other interviews she makes. Looking forward to the web series! By the way he gave great dating advice. Finding someone who is a best friend first is key. Also I definitely waited until 12 for Blazing Saddles. I definitely wasn't a 5 year old shouting "where all the white women at" in the grocery aisle while my semi-deaf mom shopped completely oblivious.
