He tried to sound like George Jones, and told Jones that. George Jones risked arrest leaving Alabama and going into Nashville ( for a number of outstanding warrants) to visit his wake and sing a hymn for Mel. The cops were tipped off and stayed away so that George could pay his respects.
Mel was great! You never hear anyone talk about him, or any of his music on the radio. Fortunate for me, my Dad really liked him and had his greatest hits tape when I was a kid. I remember listening to Mel when I was very very young. I always liked him and his songs. No doubt he was one of country's greatest singers! They just don't sing like that anymore! I love it!!!!
Mel was one of the greatest of Country Singers we have ever had! What a shame we didn't have him around very long. He was originally from my home state of West Virginia......Roger
I met Mel Street when he and Penny DeHaven opened for George Morgan at a little park in West Virginia. Mel Street was a very friendly young man and the crowd loved him.
Born and raised in Wva. saw Mel Street in Chicago, what a true country singer, long live his music along with Vern Gosdin, Keith Whitley, and Earl Thomas Conley. Carlos Mitchem, Eccles Wva.
He used to pick around here a lot. I met him and the Borrowed Angels over in the Kings Mountain area when I was learning 'steel'. 'steel' player was 19, taught me not to 'whine'. Mel Street, one of my favorites.
Hay!!!!! I love Mel's singing and I, do not need to sling mud at his memory nor should any one else. Let's remember the man and his talent and be glad we had him in our lives for a precious short time.
Who is the guy that introduced Mel and did the interview I have never seen him before ...and I thought I had seen them all....who was that guy?? and what ever happened to him ..he could have been another Rough Enema I mean Ralph Emery ...
At certain times he ev ens resembles George Jones. Sounds like George. Street was a excellent singer and this was a excellent song. Classic forever country.
This mans talent was incredible....If Mel hadnt suffered depression he'd still be making records today.....would be fantastic to hear him and George Jones duet...
@MrRogermaynor I was only 5 years old when Mel Street tragically left us,but i've discovered more of his material in recent years and haven't regretted it.
Doesn't get any better than Mel...as a songwriter or a singer. I haven't heard this in a while. I enjoyed it. Thank you. I'm subbing this channel. ~BCK
I was lucky to get to know mel street and i was so saddened when i heard about his suicide. He was for a country star and kind sweet gentle and moody man. im proud to have known him.
This is the song that I remember Mel most singing. Stan Hitchcock is a great singer himself. I love to hear him sing a Louvin Bros. song "Have I Stayed Away Too Long"
Greg Hoss i agree all the way and we just lost the possem George was one of the greatest singers of all times and Mel Street is right with him take it from me am a entertainer myself and writer of true country am LARRY GOSSETT
I agree. I won't hardly listen to the so called country stations anymore. Thank goodness we have an AM station that plays music like this that I can listen to when I can't be home to play my playlist on here.
I posted on one of Mels other songs. I saw a guy in Sevierville TN do a tribute to Mel Street, and sang this song. How awesome to see people keep the LEGENDS alive. American Pride was the group. A tribute group to the Statler Brothers. LOVED IT...
@goodmusic70 hey did you or do you have i met a friend of yours today posted or can you of it live like this i seen it once but cant find it now thanks
We all enjoy good music wether it is country, main stream, but nice to hear the words and music is in the background. Guess that is why older music is so popular
Does anyone KNOW when Mike Johnson was in Mel's band, he played steel guitar for Mel for awhile, and he later played for MANY YEARS with Bill Anderson's band, the PO' Folks... now a session/studio steel player in Nashville I think? thanks. I used to have a CRUSH on Mike Johnson back in the Sunset Park (West Grove, PA) days, lol; was just wondering...
