Live 1971. My wife and I used to hear this version way back then on my '59 Chevy radio in Meridian,Mississippi. Also got to see him at the Nashoba County Fair. Great show !!! Still remember the funny jokes he told. One of his storys at the fair: "A lady stopped me just before the show and said 'I'll bet you make alot of money Mr. Tillis' ". "I said, yes ma'm I make ALOT of money...But the goverment takes most of it...They tell me I'll get it back when I'm old.......But that's like giving a squirrel nuts after he's lost his teeth."

R.I.P. Mel Tillis. I think I can speak for many when I say thank you. You have entertained millions and made this world a better place. Most of us will leave hardly a trace after we are gone. I am quite sure you will be entertaining millions into the far far future with your lifetime of work in front of a microphone and camera. Again on behalf of myself, past, and future generations, thank you.

Well just Gosh. Mell, like Jerry Reed, was just as interesting to listen to talking as singing. His stories are deep and pulled my ear in but he would flip into song just to let you know the emotional power of those memories. I just love that old style. Older artists like George Jones and Johnny Cash had done that. Setting up songs with stories before hand. The way Mell took a step back and defantasized his song to make sure he wasn't being confused is telling of his character.

Back in my DJ days, I visited with Mel and Don Williams on the tour bus they were sharing. They gave me 3 silver dollars to give to my kids. It was a real pleasure to share a few minutes of their time.

When I was a boy, I had a real bad stutter. Just like any kid I was embarrassed about it, but Dad would always calm me down talking about Mel Tillis. He was on TV and radio and movies etc and he stutters so you'll be fine. Luckily I grew out of my problem or that's what they told us, but as I look back Mel was the only "Hero" that people with speach problems have ever had. I like to think that the old Stuttering Lad is speaking so clearly now with our Savior. Thanks for everything Mel, Rest in Peace.

Yes ole Mel was an inspiration for all of us and he actually learned how not to stutter, but he was so funny about it he kept it in his act.

I used to listen to this on the AM radio in my 1966 Rambler (my first car). Mel Tillis was a great inspiration to me. I'm a self-taught guitarist. I would sit in my Mama's back porch swing with an old Sears and Roebuck acoustic guitar and a chord book. Every time I caught myself getting discouraged I would think of Mel Tillis and tell myself "if Mel can overcome his stuttering and sing like that surely I can play this old guitar." Today I teach guitar and I'm a studio guitarist for a major recording studio In Louisiana. Thank you Mel for the inspiration, and thanks to the gentleman that posted this for bringing back some fond old memories.
