can you give some reasons why you don't like it now? It almost looks exactly the same in terms of the buildings, just the cars are different, different haircuts. Obviously there's been a cultural shift since then and more immigration from asia

@@WarningTimes , it's hard to say when you've been there for over 4 decades here and you've seen too much etc. I'm not sure how long you've been around here, so I can't say on your part because you may or may not be younger than me. Unless you where there all those decades ago for me to explain would be pointless unless you were there when the city was better?! Yes change comes and is constant and the immigration has always been around but the city is dead, lifeless and a concrete jungle. Our current and former premiers/city council have eroded the history of this too. Perhaps the best way for me to explain to you is if you watch melbourne throughout the 1980/90's on RU-vid to get a better idea here. Maybe it's just me but if the boat as now floats for you?! Enjoy it.

@@TheAxelay Well I came into this world in 1995, so never experienced the 80s :D I don't really go to the CBD anyway I just go to Frankston, Mornington (because I live near to these places), or places on the Frankston line that aren't too far away. There has been a change to working from home due to the pandemic, so a lot of people aren't bothering to commute to the CBD and back, and more people are moving further away. It has its pros and cons, the problem with Melbourne always has been that the CBD is quite far from the outer suburbs (1 hour or more train journey), and there is nothing going on in the suburbs, but now that is changing, Frankston is improving (more bars and cafes opening) and Mornington for example is becoming much more popular. I'm sure this is happening to other suburbs that are further away from the CBD. I think this is good, because in Europe, e.g. Prague, the city is way less spread out like Melbourne which means that everyone can access the centre of the city more easily to hang out, go to cafes, etc. Melbourne being more spread out means that it really needs to have more 'CBDs', in other words there should be CBD-like areas in the outer suburbs so those people don't need to travel 3 hours+ return each day just to go to the CBD. But yeah I agree with you that the CBD has lost its charm, I remember being in the CBD a year and a half ago, and it was grim and I wondered why I even bothered to spend all that time on the train to get there.

@@WarningTimes , I won't ruin it for you as I have no right to do that as I came into this world via 1978 here so there's a difference here. I won't bother to ramble on because it doesn't help anyone but you can learn alot on how melbourne used to be via YT (suggest melbourne tourism 1/2 to get idea here?!) but only if you're interested here?! Because what you value now is what you'll miss later on down the line or as you you've already noticed the charm going as it is here. No matter the gen, we all lose under this council and state government here. I'll say enjoy what can now because it won't last forever and I hope you go away with some kinda good memories here. I may hate the current CDB but I now venture outer melbourne now but I fear the gentrification will destroy that too?! It's already started via places like Geelong here.

@@TheAxelay To be fair, most of Melbourne's best architecture was lost between the 1950s-70s when there was very little heritage protection, and replaced with a lot of the uglier 'modernist' and 'brutalist' architecture. Since the 1970s, there was an effort to preserve what was left of Melbourne's best Victorian and Art Deco architecture and most of it remains intact since then. I think there have also been a lot of improvements such as making the city centre more pedestrian and bike friendly to discourage cars, because without those initiatives, imagine how much worse the traffic would be. There has been some great losses - in the 90s I loved going to a lot of the unique, independent stores scattered around the city but they've mostly been wiped out by bland chains. Also some of the newer development in the north end of the CBD and Southbank is just horrible and lacks character. And the loss of the 'suburban' (inner city) VFL grounds marked the end of a very unique part of AFL culture. Overall though, the public transport is much better, the walkability is better, there are less cars, more public spaces, the pre-war architecture has stopped being demolished like it was in the decades leading up to the '80s, there are so many more options for food, drink, entertainment, etc. Time always marches forward and we can't stop it. We can only do our best to adapt with it as best as possible which for the most part, Melbourne has managed to do very well. Right now due to the Metro Tunnel works it feels chaotic and 'unfinished' with a lot of construction but the pay off will be worth it when it's all complete in the next 2 years. I'm sure during the 1960s-70s it felt much the same with the construction of the City Loop, coupled with all the 'Whelan The Wrecker' signs as our Marvellous Melbourne heritage was ruthlessly demolished for the brutalist/modernist towers of that era.

Not really. You can see more of the sky in some of those shots due to there being less skyscrapers in the background. Also the demographic make up of the pedestrians has changed much since then.

@@mebeme007 the name Rialto was above the doors of the old building in Collins Street. I watched the name plate being chiselled from above the doors of the grand 19th century building.

@@willsshepherd2976 Oh, so it sounds like they may be simply changing/updating the signage. That would've been interesting to see. I would've tried to get a pic of as much as was left of the sign before it was removed, then thought about going back in later weeks to get a pic of the new one. 😜 I like seeing side by side pics of then and now objects and places, etc.

I do not even recognise Melbourne anymore and it is heartbreaking! I was 19 in 1988 and I too was enjoying night clubs and going to the City Square ( Arghhhh I am devastated that it was taken away from us 😢) and the stores were quality not absolute rubbish! Melbourne looked so beautiful and now it looks dirty and a mess. I can't stand that politically correct is such a big thing now. What happened to having a sense of humour? Oh how I wish for a time machine! Bourke Street Mall was so beautiful 😢
