i wrote this song right before my grandma died. she was my best friend. she lived with me growing up, and we used to do everything together. she didn't speak english that well, so most of the times it was just me playing guitar for her and her sitting there with her rosary beads.
its a bit of a wild ride, but basically towards the end of her life, she was put in a 24 hour care facility. I visited her every week, about 3 or 4 times and would bring my guitar. at this pooint she couldnt really speak or see too well, so she would put her hand on the guitar to feel the vibration. the only reason she actually knew it was me was because i put her hands on my hair. thats one of the biggest reasons i even grew my hair, so she would recognize me.
before I moved to california, i visited every day for about 2 weeks. i think it was like 10 days in a row before i was gonna drive out to LA. i told her this and by the 3rd day of me visiting she knew what was happening.
on the last day before I left, she asked me when I would be back. it was super bowl sunday and i was slated to leave the next day on my 45 mile journey to LA. I told her, i think im gonna be back at the end of march. She said, "I wont be here". She never really said much, so when she said that I just held her for a little extra. I started saying "just imagine me on the beach" and in california etc.
She was so happy. She told me to go and do wonders.
I took a picture of her before I left, just incase.
Fast forward to the end of february. My dad calls and says she's not eating anymore so I decide to come back a little earlier. I had my car and not enough money for a flight, so i drove back the first week of march. She died while i was on the trip back.
After I came back and went to the funeral, I decided now was a better time than ever to really move to California.
