I'm Serbian soul living in England almost all my life. This song reminds me of my youth and I always cry when I hear this beautiful song. God bless Greece 🇬🇷 and Serbia 🇷🇸. I love them both with all my heart ❤️
We played this very clip today for my mom's funeral in New Orleans. This was her favorite song she used to sing this to us when we were kids and then would sing along to it when we were in the car riding together and we played it for her every night up until the end. She was from Rhodes, Greece. Sagapou momma we will love you and miss you everyday!!! ♥️🙏♥️🙏♥️🙏♥️🙏 🇬🇷♥️🇬🇷♥️🇬🇷♥️🇬🇷♥️
@@robertogaudencioherreramen9005 From my window, I send off one, two and three and four kisses that reach the harbour (as though) one and two and three and four birds How I wished I had one and two and three and four children once they would all grow up to become "dashing" lads, for Piraeus's sake No matter how long I search, I cannot find another harbour to make me "wild" over, as much as the Piraeus where, as soon as night falls, (it) pours out "songs" for me and its "pen-sketches" changes, gets filled up with children As soon as I walk out my door there's noone I would not "love" and as I go to sleep at night I know that, I know that I will be dreaming of him (/her) Gems, on the neck I set and a bead (as a) charm for at night I await, as I go out to the harbour a certain "stranger" to find
I spent my youth age in Greece, used to listen this songs in year ,1990-1994. I stayed in Nea Ionia, Athens. I am Kurdish and I love Greek people and love Greece.
"Never on Sunday", also known by its original Greek title "Ta Pediá tou Pireá" ("Τα Παιδιά του Πειραιά", The Children of Piraeus), is a popular song written by Manos Hatzidakis[1] and first sung by Melina Mercouri in the film of same name, directed by Jules Dassin and starring Mercouri.[1] The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1960, a first for a foreign-language picture.[3] The film score to the movie was first released on 1 October 1960 by United Artists Records.[2] The song has since been recorded by numerous artists, and has gained various degrees of success throughout the world. So the original version is the Greek. Thanks from Greece for your comment
I’m Greek but I was born and raised in Canada. I never felt a part of my culture, I never visited the country and I barely know the language. Listening to this now, I have tears in my eyes.

While Never on Sunday was playing in NY, live..not the movie, I was so fortunate to see her live. Orson Bean played the male role and in a scene where he was supposed to come in thru a window, he did and knocked the set over. She did not miss a beat and the show went on. I have every album she has recorded and now I am collecting cd's of her music. I still miss her. What a talent!!!!!
Α-π-ί-σ-τ-ε-υ-τ-ο.
This song "The Children of Piraeus" written by Manos Xatzidakis won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1960 and Melina Mercouri won the award for Best Actress at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival for the movie "Never on Sunday"..
When I was younger my mother adored this film because it reminded her of the beauty of her homeland Greece and would watch it often as would I. Now she's gone but the memories of the movie and this beautiful song live on. Typing this through tears, I still recall the beauty of my childhood and my lovely mum. Sa ahapo akomee, manoola mou..... Forever. Never on a Sunday......
My grandmother used to sing me this song and it fills me with such joy whenever I hear the words or the tune. It is amazing what you can find on the internet and all I did was type in a few of the words from the chorus! Wonderful!
Mine too!! That is how I got confirmation of my Greek heritage ( I later took 3 DNA tests which proved right) My mom, turns out silenced my grandmother and instead told me that I'm half Italian and Turkish. My mom was born in Italy but is actually Greek. My grandmother still expressed our Greek heritage in ways such as singing this song and hanging blue and white Christmas lights. My mom must have done this to keep my nationalistic turkish dad happy.... I can't think otherwise why she would hide my Greek heritage 🇬🇷❤
@@graceaxisa4213 thank you 😊😢 even after 39 I am learning the truth. The sad thing though is my first DNA was in 2021 and when it showed 30% Aegean Islands, I asked my mom. She said, "unless it's done by a doctor, don't believe it" So I listened to her but re-did two more tests this year; they all show Greek as primary. My mom is upset with me for looking into my heritage!
It's so happened, I have got my first kiss from a girl with that song. It was a warm fragrant summer evening on our Bulgarian sea resort of Nessebar. We were sitting with her in a boat on the shore and the casino orchestra against us was performing just that song. So, I was surprisingly kissed. It was long time ago, but I will never forget it. That's why I love that song.
I were in Nesebar one summer. Knowing how romantic and beautiful place it is, your story sounds like movie scene. Hope to get there again, soon! Greetings from Belgrade!
An awesome demonstrantion of greatness from Greece! You know, I live in this country for over 5 years and I can't speak their language, but I love it so much! :,D
The portrait that she looks at the beginning and singing to it is the legendary players of Olympiacos Pireaus, my team the greatest team in the world. Greece need a woman like Melina now.
I remember this song from my childhood when we used to play a record with Greek songs at home,a really marvellous song and singer,Greeks should be proud of Melina Mercouri and all the things she has done for the her country.
This song is both sad and wonderful because it conjures images of a lovely woman like Melina who is both so full of life and yet so lonely looking for true love.
My wife IS Makedonien Greek, i am bavarian german. ❤️ greek Songs are great. I Love Greek. Open ❤️ and best food in Europe.. thanks to the Greeks for IT. By Hermes ITS great...
I love music from the debts of the heart, as to things that are special, to the singer... she let her whole heart show-- and WE are touched, by her, forever... thank you, melina...
Sagapo' - Ti amo ❤Eukaristòs Ellàs for Melina Mercouri - Vangelis and Demìs Roussòs. (Demetrio Stratos too ) . Sweet memories of my vacation in Greece - Cycladi Islands 🚢
Splendida. Grande attrice, grande donna.
OMG, What a glamorous voice. I an hearing the Original version for the very first time. Don't understand a word, thanks for the translation. But already cant stop hearing the song.
