I met Ms. Etheridge twice, once in Kansas, as a student at K-State thru my many lesbian friends at the nearby military bases and the like, and later, once at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She was our guest artist, who the student body's Music Committee succeeded in paying a paltry sum and getting to play a show for free for the students and anyone who wanted to attend. As also on the school's student LGBTQ org, I felt like I scored big, since it coincided with the campus' Pride week period. (It wasn't in June, when that usually goes on across the country.) This was 1994 or 95, and the show was the most successful ever, and there were at least a couple hundred turned away at the door apparently, we'd be told later, who could not be packed into the school's thousands-seated auditorium. "Your Little Secret" had come out, and she was skyrocketing to even bigger stardom than already achieved. I had nervously asked her to mention that we were also having a showing of a partial display of the Names Memorial AIDS Quilt, and she did so, so generously. She was really in her moment, and hell, i'll say it, super smokin' in that way she does, and while it had been a couple years since she came out, it still felt present and timely, maybe BC in Missouri, we're years behind the times! She's a hero and a star forever.

Funny story. I was like 15 and totally obsessed with Mellisa Etheridge. I saw her at the Peoria Civic Center and I was so nervous that I handed her one of my guitar picks to have her some how give it a bit of her magic mojo lol. I ended up playing that guitar pick down to a little stub, and it always felt like she was jamming with me. Oh, to be 15 and in love with music…. Now I’m almost 50 and I woke up with the Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael song stuck in my head, which led me down a whole rabbit hole of awesome ME classics.

This is an awesome video...I love listening to Melissa and watching her. I love watching every minute she is strumming that guitar !!

Since I'm all about flattering her, you should know that she took it upon herself a year or so ago to come to support a friend, a woman with a restaurant in Ferguson, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis where I live, that suffered that horror of a shooting of an unarmed black teenager, Mike Brown, and subsequent riots that followed in 2014. This was a world-reported, infamous tragedy, and not the region at it's best. She gave an impromptu performance, out of her typically gracious, progressive, socially-aware, and service-driven soul.

I LLUUUUuuve the "As Cool As You Try" video, the song pure rocking-out-Etheridge, and with a total throwback image of small-town LGBT bar that takes me back to Kansas and Columbia, Missouri.
