Saw her in concert and she sang this, at the time I was in an abusive marriage. When she sang this it felt like she was singing to me. I fucking cried. It was so beautiful. Little did I know, this was the beginning of the end of that horrid relationship. I'm now three years free. I am a survivor and whenever I feel like I need to hear it I crank up this song and give myself a release.
She definitely gives the song another perspective. My mom and dad didn’t get along too well when i was in my youth. When we went on long drives with mom, and dad wasn’t around, she’d always turn this song up, And I completely understand why now. They split a few years later. The hard part is, my mom didn’t end up anywhere any better.
i'm tired some people tell me i'm not feminine. Hey, just because I wear pants and like rock and soccer and cars and burnout paradise and halo and i never wear make-up and never care for beauty like that, god, doens't mean I'm not a woman -.- cause those are girls, princess, melissa is a queen xD
Well femininity is a social convention, so yeah that's not feminine, but that has nothing to do with attractiveness. And I can say that as a man who loves tomboys, natural beauties, and the sort that doesn't mind gettin her hands dirty!
This song was a powerful influence when I was feeling powerless and I made one of the biggest decisions in my life. You helped me know that I could handle anything and everything that happens. Thank you, Ms. Etheridge. You changed my life, and now I truly do feel free!
This is the way I heard this song when Tom sang it all those years ago. Why were lyrics so sad to me ? I was a happy guy with a decent love life, was I thinking of her or me ! Great job Mellisa, RIP Tom 💔🙏🇺🇦
Call it scared, confused, apprehensive, call it whatever you want but all I know is that as I sit here and type this at the age of 26, I did and continue to live like a refugee. Too afraid to love the only way that my heart knew how and I've let the years of my life pass me by. My message to all is to not live like I have. Don't care what others will think of you! Live your life for you and love the way that your heart wants you to. In the end, no one wants to be alone.
I really hope you have taken your own advice and are loving the way your heart wants. You are you. It's not easy but with anything in life you have to not live the way others expect you too. Live YOUR life. Easy to say, hard to do.
I have been to several of your concerts and I love your voice, it is so soothing and very warming to my heart. I would be extremely grateful if one day you could bless me with your presense.?. Thank you! Much Love!
I love all her stuff and have seen her live a few times (I was always usually one of the few straight males there lol) and I love hearing covers and how other musicians do them. I definitely prefer it when they make the song their own which she does here but it’s Tom Petty right lol? Gotta go with the original. I do like her cover of Springsteen’s Born To Run better than his though.
I went to one of her concerts with my then-wife. Melissa was superb. I was one of the few men there, and maybe the only man in a straight couple. They closed all of the men's rooms to men except one!
Let it RIP like ya did In the beginning PLEASE !!! Kick ass voice and passion ya made my 16 year sentence for bank robbery start with freedom in soul and mind..long time ago.. GIVE ME SOME WATER..been free a long time an miss yer tunes !!!
Great Song. I always liked her music and voice. On the other note after watching this Video I wonder would she be like.. a Drag King ? Also if you see the Tom Patty's video virsion of this song You can tell that He could be Her girl friend and She could be His Boyriend. lol...:) Looked like it.
She actually cut it sometimes in the 90s to a shorter length than her early 90s days. She tried to make a comeback in 99 and well that wasnt the right time to make a comeback considering one other veteran, Celine Dion, was more fresh on viewers minds and she was enough contention for the teen pop artists and alternative rock bands that were dominating.
Well I am an aunt and I seen her perform last year ...I am straight but I just love her voice and the song is special to me as I dedicate it to a younger friend that experienced a bad relationship and hoping she's stronger now .
OMG !!! ...... Please tell me you're being sarcastic and don't tell me you think she actually wrote "Refugee". "Refugee" was of course written by Tom Petty & Mike Campbell and was a #15 hit by Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers in 1980.
She looked much more prettier with long hears i think, but anyway its actually quite amazing cause she isnt young anymore i mena she is lot after 40 and she still got this something and she still has amazing voice.
i sing this song with my band... and it fucking rocks... and now i realise it more like this version than the feckin Tom Petty version.... the bridge bit ROCKS in this version. This whole version ROCKS.
