Melissani is a fantastic lake and cave located on the east coast of Kefalonia Island. The lake in the cave can be visited by boat. The boatmen, who are also guides in this underworld, create a beautiful atmosphere through their kindness and jokes. The cave is 164 m long, 35 m wide and 20-30 m deep and is divided into two by an islet. Part of the ceiling of the cave is collapsed and light pours in through a wide opening. At noon, the sun hits the lake's water directly, giving it an intense, unreal blue color, which brought it fame. The water is extremely clear and photographed from a certain angle, the boats seem to float in the air. The cave belongs to a karst system that affects the island for tens of kilometers. It is amazing that the water of the lake is a transitional point of an underground water flow that crosses the island from west to east. The water enters the ground through sinkholes north of Argostoli on the west coast, reaches Melissani after 2 weeks and comes out as underwater springs in the Gulf of Sami located a few hundred meters on the east coast. In Greek mythology, Melissani is the cave of the nymphs. According to legend, the nymph Melissanthi committed suicide because the God Pan did not respond to her love. It is very interesting that the artifacts from the 4th-3rd centuries B.C.E. with representations of nymphs and the God Pan unearthed by archaeologists in the mentioned subterranean islet, have led historians to the conclusion that the islet served as a sanctuary dedicated to these deities.
