My word, they're so good. Their tone qualities resonate throughout the entire facility, and the employment of articulation on each of the notes is crisp and crystal clear. Bravo to some of the best mellos I've ever heard. Without a doubt, DCI level.

People are tearing apart this vid for the wrong reason. "This sounds like crap" True, but i've heard much worse and they just need more practice. "It sounds like a trumpet, just play trumpet if you're gonna play that high" This sounds nothing like a trumpet, its just playing the same note. Learn more about timbres. Also the most likely reason this sound pretty bad is because most young mello players and many show style directors give their mello players trumpet mouthpieces which make the mellophone sound crappy
Seriously, style isn't the issue in this. Its the quality. Tone quality is not round and full, air support is lacking, Style differences is fine and it doesn't have to be DCI to be a great or entertaining style, however, bad tone, intonation and control is ALWAYS a bad choice.
+David Durham Do you know how hard it is to make mellophones sound good? The mellophone is not a quality instrument. It's a piece of crap that was created so the French Horns would have a spot in the marching band. Take it from a college mellophone player- this wasn't half bad.
Brandon, I never said it was easy to play a mellophone with great sound, tone, intonation and control, however it is not impossible. The best musicians in the world can make terrible instruments sound great. Take it from a Horn player who majored in music, teaches music full time, has performed on mellophone with drum corps in NY and NJ as well as now teaching mellophone in a drum corps - it is not as difficult as one may think.... here is a clip of 16 mellophone players who are in between the ages of 18 and 22 doing exactly what I mentioned...

Phantom regiment this year... I wouldn't call it mello screaming, but extremely high notes that are loud with an amazing sound. That's what we would do for "screaming" unlike trumpets, where it's high and loud
Everybody you're getting on these kids for playing in they're style. They are show style MELLOPHONES!!!!! If you look at many show style college band mellophone sections, they'll play just as high and higher. The horns sound like that because there on trumpet mouthpieces...again another show style trait. If you don't understand it don't comment. These kids are talented and with practice they'll be amazing
***** sir i don't think you understand, these kids are not talented, they have some of the worst of the articulations i have ever heard.and they can't hit a note that they want to ever, they crack when they go to the higher notes so they fail.
as an experienced mellophone player i would like to let you know that when i was in high school i was playing Denis Wick mouthpiece. There is no trumpet mouthpiece style. We in the music world call it, shit. Sir i suggest you listen to a good mellophone piece, played by a good mellophone player. then tell me if these kids have "talent"
i did say WITH PRACTICE.....furthermore I've marched this style since i was in 8th grade and now im in college (still in a show style band) playing mello.....if y'all dont like hoe they play why donn't y'all go to their school and help out rather than criticize pointlessly
I don't like schools that do this. They teach the kids the wrong fundamentals and everything. You shouldn't puff your cheeks. You shouldn't be slouching back or have your elbows in your waist. Very cringey

Trumpet mouthpieces on a mello can work. My entire sction used trumpet mouthpieces for almost all of last year and we were still pretty good. Trumpet mouthpieces just mean the band doesn't have enough money to pay for mello mouthpieces.

Shit ion no about they tone, but the instrument wasn't made for screaming, it was made to be the beauty of the band but just for everyone's info I'm in the low to mid 4th octave on mello ;)
Playing high notes doesn't determine who's the better players. The best musicians are the people who can play the easiest music and make it sound just as amazing as hard music. But anyways, blue team won. No doubt about it
To all the people saying these guys sound bad... Way to be rude. As a musical community we should be building each other up, not tearing each other apart. I have 2 things to say to these musicians tho. Open up your throat and drop your jaw a little bit, and use better air. That alone will do wonders for your tone. Also, for pitch accuracy, sing the notes in your head as you play, and you won't frack or miss notes as much. Those have helped me as a mello player, and I hope it can help you, too. However, as this was in 2011, I hope you have improved, and if not, I hope I helped.
Mellophone, the horn is easy to play and make a good tone if you know how to do it. My schools old mellophone is complete trash. It was dented all around and not a single spot was clean. But i still made it sound like a decent horn. Yes dents to affect sound quality for those that didnt know that.
I really don't enjoy screaming on a mellophone. Not that it's too difficult, but I really came to like mellophone because of that nice dark, suppressed tone. I thought the lower parts for both groups sounded alright.
@JSUTrumpet So you must not be a trumpet player for JSU, kuz these are high school students and the two guys for MSP (blue) it is there first time having a face to face battle. So how about you act like somebody in college (thats if you are in college) and point out whats "trash" and be constructive about it.
