Where would you modern prog rock have been without the Mellotron it added that haunting, atmospheric and classical body to the early King Crimson albums, I remember (when hardly anyone had heard of them) putting Foxtrot on the turntable and being struck dumb by the first track, Watcher of the Skies. Many thanks for presenting this video and so well played.

Bill fransen is my dad who helped get the mellotron started with Mr. Chamberlain I remember my mom taking me to where they first started making them in upland cal.

Strawberry Fields Forever will always be my favourite. One of my absolute favourite Beatles songs/songs ever. 👍 Though to be honest, all the other ones I’ve heard and the ones I know that I never knew contained a mellotron and equally beautiful and fantastic!!

Moody Blues and Genesis each could have their own video, but few solos exist because of how instead Mellotron permeates a lot of their songs and combines with other instruments.

In the pre-internet days (no much info), I remember listening to the mellotron on a few albums, including Led Zeppelin live albums, and having absolute no idea what the instrument would look like. In fact, we inferred the instrument just by process of elimination (whatever was playing and wasn't guitar, bass, drums, or a different keyboard). Some of us assumed it was some kind of keyboard, but the sound (3 violins, flute) was too warm and fragile to a be a mere synthesizer, and at the same time it sounded too versatile to be a mere sampler, especially for the 80s. (Going digital was terrible for keyboards, IMHO). Now I'm a *huge* mellotron fan. The webpage Planet Mellotron page is a real gem.

But Coolio sampled "Pastime Paradise" by Stevie Wonder, which was recorded on a Yamaha Dream Machine, not a Mellotron.

The Mellotron was a game changer, for musicians, in bands during the 60s, it was the gateway for Symphonic Rock……just look at the wonderful concept albums that we had after that. One of the best inventions to date in my mind.

While we will never be famous enough to our songs played others, But we certainly love the Mellotron and use one as often as possible in our recordings. We have a vintage M400 Mellotron (with 4 tape frames) as well as 2 Mellotron Micro's and an M4000D (with 5 sound cards). You can never have too much Mellotron!

coolio pushed the mellotron to its limits and beyond. Its only fitting when he left this earthly plane he went out like a king, he went out in the throne room, he left us just like elvis did another great musician, music royalty if you will. He is now in a better place, he is in gangster paradise. The eternal reward for the greatest of the great.

No doubt that the Mellotron is a really amazing instrument, and the digital release solved ALL the issues of which the old mechanical analogic one suffered, not to mention that has a bank of sounds which the old tapes powered one could only dream; this 4000D is and remains a milestone of the syntesizers and a reference point for a lot of musicians 👍.

It’s my understanding that Mike Pinder, Moodies original keyboard player, did work for Mellotron and therefore had the knowledge of how it worked and when needed, he could fix it on stage during some early Moodies concerts. Not many bands could take a mellotron on the road because of the unreliability of the instrument in the early days of its production, because Mike had the knowledge and wherefore to cope with this, The Moodies had that SOUND when playing live, unlike other bands who just used it in the studio. This was an advantage that the Mike and the Moodies had for many years from a touring perspective. It is written that Mike changed to a Chamberlain at some point but I’m unsure as to the reasons why. Hope this helps.

Alternatively, for a tiny fraction of the price of the Mellotron 4000d, you can get the excellent Gforce M-Tron Pro VST for your laptop. It's excellent and includes these sounds and many more in great detail. Under $200 vs $2700 for the full size keys version (the only version many I would hope would consider. Mini keys...yuk).

@@NicolasMelisFrom what I've heard in the online demos, yes. There are plenty of bands using their VST to cover the sounds from Genesis, Yes, etc. The GForce M-tron originally came out a good 20 years ago and it's still probably the best Mellotron VST. Choosing to this in a hardware keyboard is a preference for people that don't like using software, but it comes at a hefty price in money, storage space and weight if you transport it

Actually, for 15 bucks you can have Mellotronics Streetlytron Pro for iPad. I own it and it sounds glorious. 90 voices, 65 from Streetly Electronics' production master tapes - from the Mellotron MKI, MKII, M300 and M400. Full 8-second samples.

I have no idea, as I haven't heard M-Tron Pro. I only use the iPad with Streetlytron though I also own Korg Module with their Mello add-on; Streetlytron is better. I like to think that I have a discerning ear & taste, and what I have is all the Mellotron I need... Well, okay, I kinda need the sound for the guitar intro to Bungalow Bill, hehe.
