Static air on a mountain can be a sign of an incoming electrical storm, or worse, an impending lightning strike. If you hear static or your hair is standing up, get down ASAP. Glad it was uneventful for these folks!

If you hear static on the top of a mountain it means you are in the middle of a brewing thunderstorm. You need to get to a safe area immediately because you are at risk of being struck by lightning

Chilean here. It seems to me that no Japanese would say that. Regarding earthquakes, they are calmer than us, and a 7. something below .5 isn't such a big deal. For us, at least.
