I have the 6 liter filter from them. I use it all the time and it works great. I originally didn't want one that big, but the price got me and I'm glad I bought it because it lets me pitch up further from a water source and make less trips to one even if it's close by. I wish the hanging strap was completely detachable instead of sewn on one side, though.

I like the 6L system as well. Bit big for most of my hikes as I am usually close to water but I can see the benefit when not so close. Thanks for commenting

I bought a filter straw from CT for just a little more and it came with a water bag, a long hose, removable pre-filter and back flush syringe. More importantly I was able to just walk in and buy it, no shipping.

G'day Mark, cant recall ever seeing such a compact unit with a carbon element, personally I wont look at anything without one, too much potential for heavy metals, pesticides and other chemicals in many regions, and animal carcasses just about anywhere, so for the price it is very compelling for emergency use IMO. But yeah, I carry a few HD plastic bags anyway and it solves the problem, (and a great idea to label it mate), though you are dead right, the addition of an adapter, or an integral common bottle thread, makes so much sense and surely wouldn't stretch the wallet. Hard to beat the Grayl jobs though, since they're containers too and no other accessories required ..... they're worth the bucks, ..... again IMO. Cheers Duke.

I have the newer one from them, I guess. Anyway it says a 5 level filter. They claim 4 levels is the tube stuff and the 5th level is the activated charcoal. Of course this could be just different marketing. Who knows nowadays. I personally like the filter it came with a zip up hard case with a carabiner. So I hang it on my coffee/day bag that goes with my fishing gear. Upon inspection mine is different at the bottom. It’s made to screw on a bottle. Maybe it is a updated model?
@MarkYoungBushcraft

They actually had both a the time I received this one. In fact, I thought I was getting the better one. Not sure why they would continue with this one other than it can be offered for less money. Thanks for commenting

That is interesting that they put a couple pre filters in this. I bought the 6l one after your review, and the one complaint I had (other than some small strange leak out of no where) is that it blocks up every other time I use it. I believe this is an issue with many gravity filters too. I was going to get some canvas like material and sew a bag as a prefilter, but if they’ve updated the input, maybe it’d be just as easy to buy a new one? What do you think?
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft Год назад
I see the issue. The pre-filter is great at preventing the main filter from getting clogged but in doing so, it gets clogged easily. A canvas bag (or Milbank bag) or even some lighter material should do the trick. If the pre-filter as cheap and available, it would be an option. I usually find water with very little silt in it to make easier on the filter. Thanks for commenting Jim

@@jimf1964that’s why everyone talks about bandannas so much. Use one as a pre filter. It’s easy to find one any size. Another thing is coffee filters and rubber bands is what we used years ago. Many different ways to fix that problem whatever is the easiest.
@jimf1964
@jimf1964 Год назад
@@richardhenry1969 But my filter has a 6L bag, going into a tube. How would I use a bandana or a filter? For now I’m using a cleaning patch in front of the charcoal filter, just so I don’t have to back flush, but I’m pretty sure it’ll block with every bag.
@richardhenry1969

There are so many filters on the market. I know I need one, but I've been wondering, what happens if you use it one week, then don't go out for 2 weeks, can you keep using these things? Do you flush them out or dry them out? I'd be interested to hear from people who use filters irregularly on walks. Thanks Mark
@MarkYoungBushcraft
@MarkYoungBushcraft Год назад
I have Sawyer filter I have been using for about 5 years. I back flush it after use and let it air dry. So far I can tell no degradation in performance. It is worth my doing a bit more research on the topic though. Thanks for commenting

Keep in mind that filters like this are only good for drinking water directly from the filter. Not to make coffee or something, as there is no real practical way of collecting the clean water (other than in your mouth). So if you want to do anything other than drinking water, there are more useful options available
