My mom bought me this at a garage sale around 1998 and I was blown away it could play music while the screen had all these animations on it lol. I also had the sherlock game which I played for a total of 10 minutes

If I remember correctly, the VIS was only produced from November 1992 to January 1993. It was literally withdrawn from the market after about two months. It was that much of a turd. I think they sold some to liquidators who sold them off at much reduced prices around 1994-1995. A VIS that was 700 bucks in late 1992 was 100 by 1994. At least the CD-i had (pathetic attempts at) Mario and Zelda games. My birthday is December 25, 1992. Why did I have to be born during the VIS' short life? Ugh.... November 17, 2015 3:18 am

I vaguely remember seeing this thing at Radio Shack when I was a kid. I remember thinking it was cool because it used CDs and had a funky looking controller, but my parents were smart enough not to buy it (my NES and PC were still keeping me plenty busy at the time anyway).

You know, it seems like there were as many, if not more, consoles released in the early-mid 1990s as there were in the early 1980's!! Great review!

OMG.. Now THAT brought back memories. I was working at Radio Shack when this thing came out, and thought it was really something else. It was 1992.... pre internet. The encyclopedia it came with was really something. When you consider that an encyclopedia set sells for $2200, the price wasn't that bad, the encyclopedia had interactive videos and all kinds of things with it. There were other more interesting games too. But with the advent of the internet, such a device has limited use, and life.

I'm pretty sure the controller doesn't do an auto off, but rather just works when you push a button, as essentially it's just a remote (like you would use for a VCR) in a different shape.

This was sold more as the class of "Infotainment", Education/Multimedia type device along the lines of Phillips CD-I and even 3DO. I always wanted one of these back in the day. I remember checking it out in stores and in catalogs. Tiger Direct I believe was the last company to market this.

I believe that many TVs in the 80s and 90s still mostly had mono sound. So if you were unfortunate and had an old TV you could still buy a pair of speakers and enjoy stereo straight out of the system.

Great video, love seeing these rare systems. This one reminds me a bit of (of course) the CDI, but also the Commodore Dynamic Total Vision, or CDTV. It also has a wireless infrared controller, unfortunatly one has to get an adapter, for two players. :) It's basically an amiga 500, without the keyboard or mouse, but a controller instead, and with a CD drive instead of the floppydrive. But i'm sure you already knew that, hehe. :) BTW, i think Sherlock Holmes is also available for that one.

I used to have this system I bought it when it had dropped to $ 399.00 it was fun to play around with I loved the Sherlock Holmes games and another game called the vampires's coffin. Space Quest was also a fun game. There were also trivia games like meeting of the minds. I wish I would have kept this system instead of selling it if only I had known that it was going to be rare .

That may have been an x86 computer made for TVs, but XBOX was the later concept on that. also... I simply just re-used one of our old computers with a VGA-to-composite box with our TV when we got a new computer for the living room. I have recently ripped a good portion of our DVD movie library onto the hard drive of our old computer, so we could have a more reliable means to store them.
