Its just not economically worth going out to a theatre. We have giant home tvs and personal spaces and comforts and increased access to streaming releases etc. and theatres have done nothing to bolster sales apart from rising prices and more distracted cell phone screens in thr crowd
I really do think all those nice flat screen TVs and home cinema systems are another reason why people don't flock to the cinema anymore. and why would they, when they have such a nice and timely way to watch the same movie at home?
I still enjoy seeing movies in cinemas, but I rarely if ever pay "full ticket prices" as I have a couple of memberships/subscription services which give me tickets. Also I live and work within easy walking distance of several cinemas (most of them "luxury" cinemas with comfortable seats, food and drink brought to your seat, etc.), which helps. I can see why people with children don't want to drive to a multiplex, spend 3 figures on tickets, drinks and popcorn, then get constantly distracted by rude people and their phone screens.
I'm exactly who you are talking about. I do see movies but only ones like mad max or big movie events. I invested a small amount into my 3.1 system and I love watching movies on it. Although the dolby theater still is a better experience, it was close to $50 for me and my dad just for tickets and that is insane
It's also super easy, barely an inconvenience to click off a movie if it's complete garbage at home. But in a theater you might feel obligated to see a little more because you paid for the dang ticket and popcorn/nachos/drink, whatever.
Since post COVID reopening, people’s behaviors have gotten a lot worse. There’s definitely reason for people to stay at home and get the most out of the streaming services money the studios already got.
I can understand that once a marketing campaign begins, you really want to have a date locked in. But the clustering of films this summer is so baffling! Why didn't Kingdom move up to start the summer season? Why are the four potentially biggest films of the summer clumped into the same 4 to 5 week span?
It seems to me that once a film is a month out from release its too late to change the date short of a pandemic or something literally shutting theaters down. Fro instance, I still feel it is not impossible that Sonic vacates the December date and speeds off to Valentine's Day. Regardless of who wins that week, that and Mufasa are still both prowling for the family audience, and thus it won't seem as big as it could've been, however the one thing that defies this theory is that January is dead movie season so both can make money then. Unless everyone decides that seeing Robert Pattinson die seventeen times is what they've been waiting since the Twilight series for.
People and families are struggling. We went to see Garfield Saturday. Two of us and it was $24 total for the tickets + $7 Water we shared + $8 Popcorn, so about $40. It's a treat / something I save for but I can't imagine a family of 4 being able to drop $80 to see a movie when you can all cuddle up on the couch, make AMC popcorn in the microwave and drink your refreshments. Have to pick and choose what you really want to see (which seems to be Deadpool for most people).
I bring my re-fillable cup to my Regal and get ice water. They don't charge me for it. Also check the schedule. not sure if AMC is doing it, but Regal is doing 1 dollar ticket older family films all summer. They also do concession specials.
@miz4535 We do, actually. More than in most countries. They provide water in smaller cups for free. OP must have bought bottled water at the theater, which would cost around that much for 2 of them.

Really is just kind of depressing. For all the talk last year of moving on from the superhero era, and that audiences will show up when the movies are good, Furiosa and The Fall Guy bombed, while the biggest news has been in regards to D&W's pre-sales (a movie that isn't even coming out till July). I don't necessarily buy into the claim that people don't want to go to the theater, but I definitely think it's clear audiences will only show up in droves when the movie is seen as an event, like with Barbenheimer. The problem is that knowing what will be seen as important to audiences is becoming harder and harder, even Marvel last year proved they aren't invincible.
Cinema isn’t dead, it’s still alive( just look at the everything at Cannes and the hundreds of indie films and shorts being made every ) really what’s in question is the theatrical experience.

I sure won't be subscribed indefinitely on these services just to watch films. Watching Hit Man today in the cinema. I wouldn't watch it on Netflix. I also don't think streaming alone can save films either. Streamers lose too much money that way. For one thing, budgets will be kept small as there is no point of a massive budget with no return. Also, look at the movies that become popular on Netflix. Mostly crap. Society of the Snow was actually good, but it seems to be the exception. You have stuff like Mother of the Bride. A film probably almost no one has heard of, is received badly, and will be forgotten in a week. That's the future of cinema without theatrical.
Here in the Midwest we were either outside enjoying awesome weather or in our storm bunkers hiding from tornadoes, neither conducive to going to the theater....
I was wondering if the weather in the US had something to do with this. I remember an interview with a cinema manager in the UK (when cinemas were just re-opening) who said that in summer he's the one praying for rain!
@@KeithFraser82 The weather in the US was calling for high winds and possible tornados. We do tend to go to the movies on rainy days and also when it's very hot.
I’m in Florida now but lived in Ohio for years. When the weather was nice and warm, we were outside. Maybe with positive word of mouth and nothing coming out, Furiousa will have a strong hold. I might see it this weekend
Hollywood is not immune to economic downturn. Time to get back to lower budget movies focusing more on story and the actual art of writing and filmmaking as opposed to massive budget 20 quadrant movies.
Economic downturn is big factor for sure. But even if it weren't, I think the biggest thing is that audiences are now more conditioned to wait for middle of the road movies to come out on streaming (combined with the content oversaturation issue on all streaming services) where before, the theater was the only place to see any movie. Even if Hollywood gets their budgets under control and make consistently amazing movies, people aren't incentivized to go if they can wait 3 weeks and it'll be on their streaming service.
They need to experiment and find out what interests their audiences, because these lineups are so tired and unappealing. I think we're in a shift in terms of audience interests, where post-apocalyptic and hollywood hype type content simply doesn't inspire any interest. Ppl blame low turn out on the theatre experience but I have to wonder if ppl are even gonna bother watching any of these at home.
@@Weaponator18 I often don't even get time to see a movie in the 1st 3 weeks, and then they just disappear from the cinema because they're already on streaming. Fairly sure everone over 50 has pretty much stopped going for this exact reason. Lots of older folks never hapve rushed out in the first few weeks.
So many articles blaming the strikes for financial results. But more blame needs to go to the studies. Them letting the strikes go on as long as they did clearly upended the industry for the worst, and if anything bad happens to the exhibition market going forward, they have nobody but themselves to blame.

They diminished the value of their own product and pushed consumers toward streaming and away from theaters Now they’re shocked that consumers have chosen to save money by staying at home, buying less physical media, and paying a flat monthly rate instead of going to the movies more frequently. They made their bed and now everyone is lying in it thinking “what happened?”
August 1, 2024, another strike will happen, this time with IATSE. Remember, studios don't need fans, camera people, grunts, costume designers, animators, sound effects folks, VFX artists, whatever all this group entails. It sounds like it's anyone who works on a movie who isn't an exec, producer, director, actor, or someone with writing credits.
On Furiosa failing, I'd posit that it may be underperforming due to dislike for the trailers and the premise of a prequel. Anecdotally some friends who loved Fury Road said they were uninterested due to those two factors.
It really hurts, if you remember, that 2020 started even better than 2019. What an amazing year that would've been and how much better it would be now...
I dunno. I’m not sure any movie would have really hit a billion that year. No MCU or Live action Disney remakes of note were planned in 2020. 2019, those two brands absolutely carried.
No time to die, F9, Top Gun, Minions, Venom were all huge Hits post pamdemic. Who knows what happens to Dune, Godzilla vs Kong, Black Widow and WW 1984 without the day in day Release. The year had great potential and people were ready to go to theaters pre pandemic.
I wasn't sure what official listing Dan followed that showed December 2019 when theaters closed for the Pandemic. I remembered it was March 2020 in Wisconsin.
I think it may be that time where we all finally ADMIT what we've been trying to avoid. Movie Theatres may not be fully DEAD, but they are not getting back to their GLORY days or probably anywhere close. We all know there is multiple reasons for this, but us still being SHOCKED by every box office bomb is getting old.
This weekend will appropriately be dubbed "the apocalypse" this is the beginning of the end folks. Its not gonna happen over night but its just gonna get worse and worse as the years go on.
it seems that way, the box office during 2010s was carried by the the mega franchises like MCU, DC, Fast and the Furious, Jurssic World etc. Now these franchises were struggling , theatres cannot rely of mid-budget action movies, comedies and dramas like they did in the 80s and 90s. These genres have largely been relgated to straming movies or big budget steaming series (Fallout, for example)
If studio’s didn’t sabotage the theater experience with streaming it would have bounced back. But I doubt how many movie theaters will survive before a change in strategy

My question is, had the actors/writers strike not happened, and the movies that were supposed to be in May like Deadpool, remained in May, would we still be having this conversation? Fall Guy was perfectly positioned at the beginning of March where it had time to breathe. Garfield was perfectly positioned in February where it had time to breathe. Apes would have opened Memorial Day weekend where it would of had time to breathe. These studios won't let these IP's breathe! Last summer, the big lesson was to SPREAD out these major releases throughout the year because last summer IP's were devouring other IP. So I don't know if this summer is more of the same and the studios not learning their lesson on scheduling or if its that and a combination of the actor/writers strike. For the love of God, let these movies breathe. It makes 0 sense for there to be empty months of nothing big being released and then when summer and winter comes around they want to throw everything and the kitchen sink into those months then wonder why films don't do well. Well, I don't know, maybe it has to do with the average person sees about 6 movies in theaters per year, so SPREAD THEM OUT. 🤦♂ There doesn't appear to be any effort to produce more premium screens in theaters (despite Hollywood is making more than enough premium shot films) but since they are not increasing premium screens in theaters - SPREAD THESE FILMS OUT! It's infuriating that studio execs don't grasp this! But then again, studio execs don't even realize social media is a thing or how to use it or the effect it has on their films and the studio, so I don't know why I'm surprised. 🤦♂

MANY films have proven they can pull summer Blockbuster numbers in stereotypical slower months from Black Panther in February to even Shang Chi in September. The old concept of 'waiting for the kids to get out for the summer' is dated at this point (especially for non kid films). So, sure, I guess they can maintain that reductive thought pattern about summer blockbuster and keep getting the same results 🤷♂
I think there's a number of factors effecting box office revenues. I think the release schedule of films is breaking some more then others. The time between theatrical release and VOD is very short for a majority. Godzilla Minus One is the exception.
I dunno but Lion King works better as a December movie over a July one, consideirng the fact that they want to bank on it like Star WArs with many movies. They have Scar and Simba's Pride planned, and likely going to keep going. Avatar, Star WArs, Lion King all fit December, now if those films will actually do well remains to be seen but that is where they belong, and also Dune Part Two came out at the best time for that movie. November last year was NOT the play.
No one wanted a Non-Mad Max film. People are getting more selective. Just look at how good the sales for Deadpool 3 are. I'm predicting Despicable Me will make a lot of money.
It’s crazy how expensive it is in the big cites, I currently live in rural state and meduim sized town and a ticket still costs around $9 and the theater always busy . 12- 20 dollars is way to much

I know for me I've going to the movies less bc it seems like theater etiquette is just going down the toilet. People keep busting out their phones and looking at their bright screens and just not caring anymore about anybody else's experience in the room. And staff doesn't enforce anything, even at at Alamo, people are beginning to ignore the "no phone" warnings. It's frustrating and I don't like to deal with it anymore, but it just happens more and more and more. 😮💨
So I’m seeing a lot of comments complaining about the movie theater experience. As someone who worked at a few, some of the grievances are misplaced. First and foremost is the staff, theaters employ Teens purposely because most still only pay barely minimum wage. Most theater jobs are havens for teens as it’s modern and a fairly simple job. That’s not to forgive poor management, I’ll admit even I get annoyed at my theater for it. But I also understand that it’s not their fault. Understaffing and overworking (even before the pandemic) are normal terms in the movie theater work world as well as rude customers who want to be pampered to. The teens also usually work directly after being in school. They are just as tired as any of us who work 8 hours a day except theyre in school then at work. A little compassion and patience can go a long way for them. Grown adults don’t usually apply at theater jobs unless it’s for management and even then the pay is shitty ans the responsibility even worse. If there’s anyone to complain to, it would be corporate who only care about profit. A point I’ll make a bit later. Next, As much as there’s rules in place and you can scream at ppl until you’re blue, patrons are always gonna be using their phones. It’s annoying and I wish there was a way around it but we live in an interconnected world where ppl feel more safer with their phone in hand than anything. I knew someone who would actively listen to their music while watching a movie in the theater. The theater has a plethora of rules and signs in place about phones but if the patrons ignore them, there’s not much else to be done. Even for the worker, telling a customer to put their phone away can lead to issues esp during the showing. A lot of it is patrons lacking respect, common sense or decency, or general disregard for anything outside their realm. Point being humans are going to humans and it shouldn’t be the fault of the theater for the way immature patrons are going to act. They could only do so much with the limited staff and/or resources. Prices. Yes. I get it. Tickets are expensive. But this is the fault of the studio AND the corporate office. To break it down (since I memorized it at this point): the first 2 weeks to month (studio depending) 100% of ticket sales go back to the studio. No ifs, ands, or buts. The bigger the movie, the more the studio wants to those ticket sales. This leaves the theater hemorrhaging for money and only one option: up the price for concession. Yes I know they’re expensive, but when a movie is a costing $200M to make and the studio wants all of its money back, there’s gotta be increase somewhere. If the cost for production in movies, as well as the costs of goods go down overall, then the concession price would go down. But this isn’t anything new. Also add the factor of amenities. Some theaters have started serving legit food, complete with servers and cooks. This gives corporate office for those an incentive to sky rocket the prices even more. ‘Oh you want nicer seats or bigger cups for drinks? Well that’s gonna cost you.’ Who goes to the movies for a full course meal? The ppl who wanted more options. The ones who were upset you can’t bring a beer into a theater. Yet those are usually the same ppl who complain about pricing. Then there’s the theaters that clearly need renovation but the corporate office is more focused on opening the newest one in the busy city to make money back vs fixing the one already open. The issues are multi-layered but it all starts from the studio and the corporations of the theater chains. I still enjoy going to the movies, regardless of the outcome. Hell, in GxK I had to get some kids kicked out because they were being a menace and disturbing the rest of us. The employees handled it the best they can but it wasn’t their fault when the kids raised their voices back causing the show to be disturbed. But I still go back each time. Cause it’s not as frequent as one would think. I’m sorry this is long winded and not exactly related to the charts video. I just get a bit defensive when ppl start blaming theaters and the workers when, like all things, it’s sooooo much deeper. I hope ppl still chance going to the theater and they enjoy it. It’s still one of my favorite things to do.
Glad for clarifying and bringing this perspective, honestly i dont think i ever really hear about or from people who work at these places, its an easy target for anger, i mean even on RedLetterMedia you have stories of people being nuisances in the theatre and cinema employees not helping so clearly a lot of movie-goers feel upset by that, but I can’t imagine how much shit cinema-employees have to put up with especially from families and kids going to movies. I imagine Despicable Me for you guys is like Black Friday for Walmart employees. I think it depends from place to place, like stripmall cinemas and more arthouse ones, or even country to country because the awful theatre experiences I hear about online from people in the US is vastly different to what I experienced moving between three countries in Europe, where depending on city it seems like things are managed sometimes well, sometimes mediocre, but probably better pay i imagine than minimum wage employees
The theater experience is the same as it always has been and really depends on the individual going and the place they see movies at. It can’t explain the trend of what’s going on at the box office
Last year, people cried of superhero and comic book movie fatigue. This year, after quite a few months of original films, biopics, and standalone sequels, it looks like this year’s box office hinges entirely on… Deadpool and Wolverine and Joker 2. Audiences are *truly* unpredictable.
I hope Furiosa has has some legs, but I think it’s important to remember that Mad Max has always been more of a cult franchise than a mainstream one. Fury Road received a ton of accolades and did reasonably at the box office but wasn’t a runaway hit. I don’t know if as a franchise it’s ever going to produce a massive hit? I also wonder with the strikes moving movies around if that’s hurt some of the momentum for the ad campaigns?
This will easily go down as the worst box office summer. Theres been little to no hype for any of this season’s lineup outside of Deadpool. Even what most are predicting to be the #1 movie of the summer in Despicable Me has literally no buzz right now.
Kung Fu Panda 4 didn't have much buzz too but it still made good money, I expect Despicable Me 4 to be bigger outside the US, the minions are well loved.
To be honest, I don’t go to the movies anymore. From 20 minute ads at the beginning, to people on their smartphones while watching the movie, to expensive ticket prices… I’m more than content to just wait until either the new movies get to Rentals or streaming.
Movie theater experience sucks now. I always dread someone is going to talk or use their phone and ruin my experience. The only movie I plan on seeing in theaters this summer is Twister--going to treat myself for my birthday.
Don't get me wrong I've been at the theaters every single weekend even during covid but a lot of things are happening comic-con's events concerts music festivals and even video games 🤔🤔
@@DwanGarcez Shows the low brain activity of the average audience member. Instead of looking for something that is good, they just look for something that most closely matches what they've seen before. The algorithm does the same. It leads to zero curiosity and the most bland blockbusters imaginable. The fact that Godzilla X Kong became a hit is a joke. So, it can't even be a film in the same universe as something else they've seen, it also has to be precisely the characters they want beforehand and not let the creators be creative however they'd like. RIP anything original at all then.
@@miz4535Can't blame the public for not showing up to the prequel to a decade old reboot to a 45 year old franchise over a holiday long with (at least in my area) great weather. Fury Road was a modest hit that film nerds sing the praises of but most people don't give a damn about.
A lot of comments I see online about the decrease in going to movie theaters is that the audience is so terrible it's not worth it, which does sound horrible. I'm lucky enough living in LA that there are a ton of theater options and I can definitely find a good theater where the upkeep is good and audiences aren't constantly being distracting. Even if the ticket is expensive, worrying about the experience isn't something I need to factor in my decision of going to the theater or not. It's just really a bummer hearing that doesn't seem to be the norm.
Seeing a lot of comments about the cost of movie tickets. I feel incredibly blessed for my local movie theater. A ticket to see Furiosa cost $5. I got nachos, a large drink, and a box of candy for $12. That cost me $17 total. The next closest theater would easily cost me more than $40 for all that. The prices here are more than reasonable. I’m very happy with my local theater.

60 to 70 million is too much also for these. You should have one main star max and the rest would be good Australian actors but unknowns . All the stunts are old school practical.

Hi, Dan. Great content as always! In your video you mentioned three reasons for dismal theater numbers--the recent strikes; consumer behavior; and unappealing movies. I want to add a fourth reason that I would LOVE to have you examine on your show: theater closures. I live in rural America; my town hasn't had a movie theater since the 80s. Even so, we had theater options 15-30 minutes away. I think in large part to due the pandemic on top of an already struggling economy the two theaters that were 30 minutes away and the one theater that was 45 minutes away are now closed. So now, if I want to see a movie, I have to drive for TWO HOURS on top of the run time of the movie and the ads before the show. What I'm saying is that I think that there are many people like me who want to patronize movie theaters again but for whom doing so has become increasingly impractical. I know that on your show you highlight small, picturesque, independent movie theaters, some that were reclaimed by cinephile citizens. Not every small town has one of those. I think it would be really interesting if you did a chart, map, or some kind of infographic on the cinema deserts that exist now. I know that I definitely live in one. Where I live the mid-market movie theaters that did reopen after the pandemic simply weren't able to stay open thru the end of 2023/early 2024.
Comparing the movie offerings this Memorial Day compared to the past, it’s shocking to see how studios seem more and more out of touch with what audiences want!
Too many people working their third jobs and can’t spare an extra $100 to take their family to the theatre even if they had the time. America is fast forwarding its status as a 3rd world country wearing a Gucci belt.
I think it would've suffered even more by opening up against Furiosa and Garfield. You don't open 3 big movies in the same weekend without some casualties (yeah Furiosa isn't doing well, but they're being marketed towards similar audiences as that of Planet of the Apes).
I feel like Fury Road is so beloved amongst film fans that it blinded us from the fact that the first one wasn't a mega-hit at the box office to begin with. The harsh truth also is that Fury Road came out a whole decade ago, and doesn't have the juice to wait that long and return to the box office with a bang like James Cameron did with the 13-year gap between the first and second Avatar films. And I know that's comparing a PG-13 movie to an R movie but I'm just comparing them in terms of their popularity amongst general audiences.
Nothing is set in stone yet for this films, but I just want to say to those outlets claiming that Furiosa isn't doing well because it "Girlbossed too close to the sun" or "Got humiliated by Garfield" or some other nonsense about a female lead=bad can toss right off with that nonsense, thinking this is some cynical effort of appeasement akin to something like "Madam Web" (Which had WAY more pressing problems than it's lead cast....mostly.) is damn insulting to it's efforts.
You hit the nail on the head Dan. There is a significant degradation in the quality of big movies being released. Today audiences are smarter, have numerous options for entertainment and things are also expensive for the average person. Hollywood needs to make a compelling case for why we need to go see movies and so far they're failing more than succeeding.
I think one reason theatres are struggling is down to generational and technological change . It used to be a regular passtime for a 15-25 year old to go to the movies the 90s and 2000s. However today, there is less motivation for the younger genration to leave the house, with so many options like Twitch, RU-vid and Tik-tok being avaiable on a cellphone. Video games are a much bigger deal too. More and more, people will either wait for streaming, VOD, or just simply skip it all together as there is so many series and movies to Stream. Especially familes, why pay $100 for one trip to the theatre when there is unlimited content online or on Prime, Disney + etc? I hope the movie theatre experience does not go the way of newspapers, blockbuster, but we will have to see how the rest of the year pans out. If movies like Deadpool and Despicable somehow manage to underperform compared to previous installments, theares will really be in trouble.
It’s like he said. That was a heck of a Memorial Day weekend in ‘95. Die Hard, Braveheart, and Crimson Tide. I might binge those on streaming this weekend.
I feel like a big part of why The Fall Guy and Furiosa are underperforming massively is because the studios behind those films (and the internet, always remember that internet hype doesn’t always translate to huge ticket sales) vastly overestimated the mass appeal of those films with general audiences, especially with them opening in what are usually pretty high profile weekends. The Fall Guy was never meant to be a film that would kick off the summer movie season (but ended up that way because Deadpool was delayed due to the strikes) and Furiosa should have never been the main big film for Memorial Day weekend.
the ceiling for movies like Fall Guy is maximum in the mid 200M worldwide range. Im using The Lost City and Bullet Train as comparisons. They also made identical amounts domestically, just over 100M. Fall Guy is not promoted as being based on the show and is treated as a new thing. Even going way back, Tom Cruise did Knight and Day (action-comedy) and it only did modest numbers. Movies like The Fall Guy are not really big grossers. Furiosa is a prequel to a movie that was only a modest success (at worst, a small flop). Recast - prequel - spin off can be a tricky combo, especially when audiences arent fully in time with the franchise already. But WB letting Miller do the movie is a great win for cinema as a whole (not so much with finances)
Honestly who wanted to go see a mad max prequel. That’s like asking my wife if she want to go see it. That would be a no. She would rather go eat at a restaurant. Movies they think people care about, they don’t. I don’t. Others don’t.
@@jesseowenvillamor6348Honestly in my opinion. The studio business model of a movie has to make half the budget opening weekend has to change moving forward. The phrase ", It's got legs" applies to allot of films considered flops this year as Dan was right to track total box office vs opening weekend. Consumer habits are changing. And studios will have to react instead of doing what they always have done.
I was surprised that The Fall Guy didn't do better to be honest. Many not -movie people at the office, of different ages and backgrounds, mentioned wanting to see it. They were going to wait a week or two though. I think it is the kind of movie that would have legs if let be, but the studio did not let it be and dropped the announcement that it would be on streaming soon 🙃 Gosling and Blunt are very well-liked in general, and I think the appeal is wide.
I used to love movies. I'm a millennial that grew up on many famous classics. But I've found in the past several years that I have less and less interest in seeing new movies and shows. I'm so burnt out on too much content and even when I have free time I find myself rewatching movies/shows I've already seen. I can't imagine how critics watch all the stuff they do because I would lose my mind, lol.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Studios, if they care about making money long-term, need to start worrying about theatrical exhibition, and do a better job of supporting theaters. Studios have shot themselves in the foot by training audiences to expect streaming releases in about 90 days. It’s killing theaters, and crippling the studios’ ability to make money from theatrical runs unless it’s something people are truly anticipating (looking at you, Dune). They could do a few different things: take the Empire Strikes Back strategy by opening small, and building excitement. Yes, I think it can still work in the www era. The other: pretend it’s 1984, just as the VHS era was really beginning to boom. Studios released films, gave audiences the opportunity to see them theatrically, and then that movie disappeared for 6 months to a year until the VHS appeared on video store shelves. Follow that model. See it now, or wait 6 months. Be transparent about this plan and I believe that will push people to get their butts in theater seats.
Honestly I think there should be more strikes. Especially from Animators and VFX artists. They need it the most. Its too bad they don't get enough respect. Especially VFX artists. Even the audience doesn't like them. The audience of online discourse about hating CGI is a problem. Double edge sword.
My view on Furiosa's failure, the Mad Max franchise is more of a cult audience. Fury Road was not a huge box-office performer. It barely made over $150 million domestically and less than $400 million worldwide. Even in the 2010s, that's not a huge blockbuster.

Dan, I truly appreciate your show & everything you do for it. Something that I remembered during all of the discourse was something you said in that, "You can't tell the success of a movie from the opening weekend box office." I really love & appreciate the perspective you bring in as opposed to the Doom & Gloom gotcha journalism that some are writing.
I often wonder how my attendance at a movie with my regal unlimited subscription plan affects the total box office. And when I go see a movie again, which sometimes I do just to show support so more movies like it will be made, does it even matter with the unlimited subscription? How do those tickets figure in to the box office total?
We saw Furiosa on Memorial Day at 7pm in Imax and there was less than 20 people total in a theater that can hold 300+. The parking lot had a fair amount of cars and there were lines at concessions. I guess people were just spread out across all the different movies.
17:40 I wonder how many $100m openings there are in any given year, it seems these were pretty rare before 2010 , peaked during the 2010s, and have not been that many in the 2020s so far. An Idea for a chart next week Dan?
I'm spending about $60 per month on streaming subscriptions. I'm not spending an extra $60 to go to the movies and sit with loud, obnoxious people to see something new when I'm already paying so much for streaming. Movie theaters need to adjust their expectations or find a way to be more than a place to see a movie. Maybe immersive cinema experiences or VR/AR experiences will do what 3D glasses never could.
Hi Dan, I'd love to see a tour of where you keep all your movie merch and any stories you have for pieces of your collection, since you seem to rotate it out from time to time! It could be like the dvd collection videos (which I loved)!
I don't know if this has been mentioned but, News reported that this past weekend was the busiest travel day in history. The TSA set records as to how many were flying. I bet this had a large impact on the box office. I guess its a wait and see what this next weekend does to know for sure.
One idea for your show: Your opinion on what went wrong and what could have helped a movie campaign. What worked & what didn't work. What could/should have been done. Was it the movie? Elements ofthe movie? Marketing campaign? Bad trailers? Timing of release? You have alot of great insight?
Hey Dan, I love the show and your analysis and breakdowns! One metric i have been interested in you highlighting is the percentage of domestic vs. international that make up the Top 5 Worldwide movies of the week. Maybe you could show a bar graph beside the movie posters on the worldwide chart that shows this percentage breakdown. I think it world be an interesting illustration of the difference. Just a thought. Keep on charting!
1995 has a weird box office trend of several movies JUST BARELY making $100M. In addition to Die Hard 3 and Casper, you had Jumanji and Se7en. Could be coincidence, but usually actors/directors have deals that trigger a bonus when a movie hits certain thresholds, and studios may keep a movie going in theaters so it inches over the finish line and keeps the talent happy
I m usually not rly into action movies (even though it s also a great love story) and I basically - due to real life restrictions- only go to the cinema for movies I genuinely wanna see or support (voting with my wallet etc). But oh boy, I was late for Fall Guy but what a great fun popcorn flick. I m happy I urged my friends to go out, have dinner and then see it, everyone had a fun time and we all were positively surprised by the movie itself. Maybe not some masterpiece but a masterpiece in the "simply great fun" category. Glad I paid for it, totally worth it!
i feel that if there is something that Furiosa along with Tron Legacy, Blade runner 2049 among others (including Fury Road) have proven, is that sequels/prequels of movies that underperformed in the box office will almost always underperform themselves no matter how good/bad they are.
When potential viewers know they can wait 2-3 weeks and likely watch a new movie on streaming the incentive to spend lots of cash going to the cinema is not there; unless the movie is expected/known to be a ' must see '. Dump the rush to streaming!!
Hey Dan...I appreciate all of your hard work. Would you consider adding the movie's budget when you do the Box Office Flashback? I find it fascinating to know how much a movie cost to make back then compared to movie's now. For example, the budget for Raiders of the Lost Ark was $20 million...which adjusted for inflation would be around $69 million today. It blows my mind that Raiders would only cost $69 million to make today while Dial of Destiny had a budget of around $387 million!
I feel like the pandemic killed theater going not because people are now afraid of getting sick. (That's a theory I've heard a lot, and I really don't believe it.) I think the problem is that the pandemic kick-started the proliferation of streaming, and streaming is really devaluing the theater experience. Even if someone is genuinely interested in a specific movie, they're now trained just to "wait until streaming," which is often just a week or two into a movie's theater run (i.e. Fall Guy). The specialness of a movie's release has been taken away in the public's mind.
After about 15 seconds (if it’s a long ad) it stays the same. The best way for Dan to earn ad revenue comes from people clicking the ad link. You don’t even have to buy anything at all. It’s not really revelatory to me. Look at the choices we had realistically: the fourth film in a franchise that seemed to have a definitive ending in the last movie, a remake of an 80’s tv show (tho honestly I love Ryan Gosling but still), 2 animated family movies when most families were probably at the beach, and the fifth film in a franchise that most young people don’t even remember and in which the main character doesn’t even appear.
Consumer confidence in movie quality is low. I hope that Joe Public got outside and enjoyed the weather,but I hope he comes back to theaters. Movies are life!
I think at this point this will just be the box office average going forward, the pandemic and the rise of streaming have simply changed the habits of moviegoers too much, they now know everything will be ok streaming after about a month or so. Only event-type of releases have garnered success like No Way Home and Barbenheimer
My memorial weekend experience with Furiosa was bleak. RPX big screen in a regal theater for myself and my 4 friends who went along. Only 3 other people were in my screening. Oof. Hopefully it gets better but that was a bummer to see. Thanks for all you do Dan! Love the numbers and insights! Wish I could get to new York but maybe one day you swing to the West Coast live? :)
Hey Dan, love the show, one small suggestion I would make is to the box office market share, would love a way to see the change in % somehow, I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't remember as soon as the new graph comes out.
Why should people go to the cinema when the movies come to streaming 45 days later. It's a shame because when i was young it was something special when we could see a movie at home months later after they played at cinemas. Thats why people gone to see a movie, they know that they have to wait a long time until they can watch it at home. The 45 day window kills the excitment.
If Bad Boys 4, Quiet Place: Day One and the hopeful box office savour trio of Despicable Me 4, Inside Out 2 and Deadpool 3 really do poor, then it is time to really sound the alarm. These are the best bets for the summer because their predecessors were all really successful. There should be just 1.2 billion domestic from the total of all 5 of these movies minimum
Going over the list of top 5 movies of Mememorial Day weekend 1995. Reminded me of seeing Crimson Tide opening weekend. As for this year. I did pay $19.99 for VOD of The Fall Guy. I will see Furiosa in a theater.
These days I go to the theater more for the Sound experience than the screen. i have a soundbar, but i still have neighbors i wanna respect and i aint gonna get that theatrical Dune 2 impact with only moderately loud volume from a single device
