This video is a special tribute to Richard Wright, keyboardist and song writer of Pink Floyd, now gone twelve years on September 15th. The song is The Great Gig in the Sky, written by Rick, himself....how fitting on this day.
I feel certain you can remember where you were the first time you heard this album.
The last chord of this song has always left me with an empty feeling....exactly it's intention, I suspect....but today the emptiness is even more profound as it strikes a certain finality that something special is now missing from the world.
Birthday wishes to Rick Wright on July 28th and David Gilmour on March 6th! Also Pink Floyd released a new album on Nov. 10th titled The Endless River. It is mostly instrumental music featuring the late Rick Wright who had recorded several tracks before his death in 2008
RIP, Rick.

Interesting statistic: the number of views for this video more than doubled from its daily average yesterday on the anniversary of Rick's passing. Indicates to me that date is still embedded in the minds and hearts of many of his fans. A fitting tribute in itself.

This month is the 50th anniversary of the album Dark Side of the Moon. Since this video was made 14 years ago, I would like to update some of the statistics shown in the video. Dark Side of the Moon is now on the Billboard LP chart for nearly 1,000 weeks selling more than 50 million units worldwide! This album was truly memorable and a remarkable gentle and hypnotic piece of music while the lyrics are of their time examining such issues as Madness, sadness, empathy, War, materialism and human existence. Also, we have Miss Clare Torry to thank for the amazing vocals on this song. I would like to add that March 6th was David Gilmour's birthday so go over to his channel and say thank you for this fabulous album and wish him a happy birthday!

Truly a great man. It saddens me even more to know that he was working on another album. Wet Dream is, in my opinion, better than even Gilmour's and Water's solo albums. He is the stuff of legends, the dark and unseen side of Pink Floyd, one who isn't recognized for what he is. A little more of Pink Floyd dies with him, though he will never be forgotten as long as someone out there listens to Pink Floyd. And so, he has reached that which we all seek: immortality. My condolences to his family.

I can imagine Rick waking up in a strange dark corridor, with a blinding light in front of him. Unsure and frightened at first, he sees a figure slowly emerge in the light, coming towards him. Rick is terrified, unable to move, unsure who this figure his or what their motives are. The figure then extends its hand, then saying in a posh Cambridge accent "Been a long time mate". Syd's come to take him home...

I got the new Gilmour album "Rattle That Lock" yesterday and have listened to it three times. I put it on last night for my ADHD wife and was only gonna play the first two cuts but she insisted we listen to it all. It's that good. Nobody can make a guitar sing and soar like Gilmour. There are a number of gorgeous solos, great countermelodies, catchy rhythms, and acoustic work, but one thing that sets this one apart from some of his other solo works (and especially the last "Pink Floyd" album he released a few months ago) is the amazing vocals. Yes, David Crosby and Graham Nash are on one great cut, but there's plenty more great harmonies, choirs recorded in big stone cathedrals, and even kid vocals. Dave's living in France has influenced some of the underlying (and one very overt) sounds on the title track and several others. The lyrics are often cryptic but beautiful as written by his wife who is apparently an Olde English scholar judging by the references. One line that also stands out on a song that is subtly anti-war is "I hear the word 'mama' sounds the same in any tongue." After seeing all the refugees fleeing the Mideast and Africa, it particularly hits home. Really powerful song. You'll certainly hear Dark Side, Momentary Lapse, The Wall and other influences come through, too. Oh, yeah, and the coup de force is that Dave apparently learned how to play piano from Rick Wright......

If you want a treat>> Look up the version of Echos which was played as the encore at their live shows. I saw them in both San Francisco & Los Angeles in April 1975 (I think) & Dick Perry and his saxaphone added some fucking intense magic to Echos that is out of this world!!!!! (Although, It might have been the 4 way hits of LSD) I had forgotten about the sax, until I read on Wikipedia that there was a short time during that era that Dick joined in and jammed with the band on the 'Echos'encores since he was already there playing his iconic sax parts on Dark Side of The Moon & Wish You Were Here. Check it out... You can thank me later for making your life more than a little better by telling you that awesome Floydian trivia. You will be blown away!!!!

I hear all the arguments about Rick. You can say what you want about David, Nick, Roger, and Syd - But Rick Wright was the SOUND of Pink Floyd. Sorely missed. You musical footprint on music is only beginning to be understood. Like a prophet in his own time, misunderstood - but as time goes on, history will see you for what you are - inventor, soulful, manifestly talented, creative, and the true sound of Pink Floyd and voice of a generation. A vice like Roger Waters needs accompaniment, David Gilmour's guitar a healthy parry, and a Lightning to Nick Mason's thunder, and muse to Syd Barrett's genius. I am going to offer the educated guess and say that you are the Pink in Pink Floyd. Thanks from a thankful fan whose soul you touched. God Bless.

Excellent! Well said. I think further proof of what you have said is listening to the solo work done by the other members since the passing of Rick. @@BigBen52 Thank you and well said on your end. It's amazing to see what the members of PF produced after the dissolution of the band. They never hit that grove. You can't argue with chemistry. I saw alot of performances with Roger Waters doing his solo shows with great musicians like Snowy White, Doyle Bramhall, Graham Bond, etc - they were very good but it lacked something. When they played Live 8 - the world was right for 24 perfect minutes. I sometimes wonder if they ever reflected what they had accomplished? Anyways, thanks for the reply. This masterpiece will forever be relevant, although I did not know Rick Wright personally, he seemed like a very gentle and decent man, I also believe that he was the bedrock and foundation of the Pink Floyd sound, as a fellow keyboard player, I learned that less can be more and there are still chords out there yet to be played, Rick was my inspiration and the reason I begged my parents to pay for piano lessons, he may no longer be among us....but he will always be with us....TS

Thanks for this, the photos and the statements, very moving. Rick Wright is my hero of the keyboards, because of his choice of sounds, his style and arranging - incredible imagination and feeling. I love his contribution to all the Floyd albums... saw the Floyd live on one occasion, when they played Dark Side, and Rick played an intro to 'Us and Them' on a synth. It was such a beautiful synth sound. That was part of his special qualities as a totally imaginative musician. Millions of keyboard players search their synth patches for some kind of special Rick Wright sound!

In the 70s the very first time I've gotten stoned I was listening to dark side--- Pink Floyd has given me fond memories over the years, now that I'm 67 and have been riding a Harley with other old bikers I'm glad to say Floyd of course will never die.

Rick guitarist, when?

Rick could play multiple instruments. In the early sixties he would even occasionally play Trombone or rhythm guitar at live performances. In fact in the early days it was his job to tune Roger Waters bass and other guitars. Quite The Talented fellow!

September 15th is the anniversary of the passing of Rick Wright which will now be more than a decade. Please scroll down a few comments ( the one with the icon of a soccer player) below and find the quote from David Gilmour about his relationship with Rick. I'm sure all Pink Floyd fans will find it memorable.

The quiet one. The band said they wouldn't do any press, but Richard did one with a journalist because "he felt sorry for the chap". It speaks volumes about the man, that he wouldnt toe the party line because someone asked for an interview. I bet the journalist remembers him to this day. I never met him but he came across as a gentleman, very articulate and sensitive, and his work was a reflection of this. He was self taught on the piano, and admitted his technique was wrong, but did we mind? Not at all. RIP Richard, say hi to Syd.

@@lynnhoffman247 I read in one of his interviews where he said his technique was wrong as he was self taught. Had he been classically trained this would not be the case.

Euan Elliott Well, I guess you can’t believe everything you read on the internet 🤣 From Wikipedia: Early Life section He taught himself to play guitar, trumpet and piano at age 12 while recuperating with a broken leg. He took private lessons in musical theory and composition at the Eric Gilder School of Music and he also learned the trombone & saxophone as well as the piano. So maybe not all he learned in school, but some he did. 🤔☮️🤗 Edit- He was proficient on guitar, flute, cello, trombone, violin, drums, saxophone and bass. RIP Rick 😇

I could never understand why people over the years have questioned Rick Wright's contribution to this band and the music! I think the world of David Gilmour and his loyalty to Rick Wright if you listen to the music you can hear his contribution!

I can only imagine his quiet words to Clare Torry to inspire the great voice which emanated from her and into eternity on the Great Gig in the Sky. Whatever they were, they were well chosen. Onward to the Great Gig. Thank you Rick
