Memorial to Virgil Fox & Carlo Curley 

Thank you for this posting remembering two great Artists. I was there with Virgil and I also found the Shaw instrument set a new high standard. Virgil Fox set the world of expressive organ and great music on its ear drawing countless people to the world of Bach and Carlo even in his short years gave more than anyone thought possible. All of the nasty comments here make me wonder their motivations. I listen to performances and am thrilled when there is genuinely beautiful, effective music-making--within the style chosen by a performer. Does it work, musically? Does the performance compel me to listen? CC does all of these. There is absolutely no reason to compare performers. This is not my idea of the perfect performance of this P/F. But, this performance is tremendously inspiring--and unique.

Bach is not race horse. It's not who can get it the finish line first. Really, dears. But C.C. maintained the clarity. Good job.

*Rush, rush, rush. The sickness of our times.* The unbridled human ego on display. No regard for the MUSIC - just showing off, plain and simple. Although the organ sounds pretty decent for the 1970s. Better than most electronics of that period.

Indeed, Carlo Curley was great, although not at the level of of his teacher. Actually, no 20th century organist was really at Fox's level. Curley's rendition here of the great A-minor prelude and fugue is really too fast. The intricate counterpoint tends to get lost. The pace at which Marcel Dupré played it during his St. Sulpice recordings of the 1950s was more reflective of the pace that an actual Baroque organist would have played it.

The ludicrous exercise of trying to compare Virgil Fox with Cameron Carpenter is like putting a 1971 Formula 1 race car beside a 2014 Formula 1 race car, and hoping against all hope that the older car will prevail. It's like saying that the superlative performances of today's athletes cannot and will not be bettered in the future. Palpable bullshit.
