More Memories from Grimsby & Cleethorpes. A collection of pics taken over the last hundred years of Grimsby & Cleethorpes. With thanks from the 80s-90s Hangouts in Grimsby (Facebook)
I was in the RN during the 70,s and was on a minehunter that docked in Grimsby a couple of times,72,74 or there abouts. One night myself and a couple of friends went out for a beer or 10,and we ended up in Cleethorpes and had what must have been a great night.Next day one of my friends told me I was invited to a party by a rather nice girl called Jill,I did not remember this but thought why not.Anyway he then said theres a catch, you have to wear your uniform,oh no,thought I,but fell for his joke.So I proceded to go ashore, in my uniform, stopped at the first pub for a pint, and they would not let me pay for it,thanked them then moved on to another, same again, this happened everywhere I went, the local people would not let me put my hand in my pocket and my back was sore with the slaps,I have never forgotten this.I eventually got to where I was supposed to be,and met the girl I was there to meet, first thing she said was why was I wearing my uniform, but I was not bothered by this time.Sad to say the girl and I were together for a while, but she moved on,she was a couple of years older than me,but I am pretty sure she was my first love. She worked in a ladies dress shop on the main drag in Cleethorpes,,,oh well,so many years ago now.I often think of her and Cleethorpes.I travelled to Cleethorpes a few times to see her, from Rosyth in Scotland where our ship was stationed, she was going to come to Thurso with me,where I lived, but saddly did not.I am 66 now,I dont know what became of Jill but it was nice knowing her,and it was a great place to have visited, never forget Cleethorpes.
A most moving collection of pictures. I was born in Church St, and lived in Kent St and Thesiger St later, in the 50s. I was almost in tears at times while watching this. It is such a shame that the once 'Great' Grimsby is not so great now. I also lived in Tennyson House in Kent St, and even that is now being demolished. I send love and blessings to Grimbarians everywhere, and to those from 'Meggies' too. Yes, things have to change, but is is sometimes difficult to let go of memories, both of people and places.
I could just sit down and cry what have we done to our Towns and Citys in our once beautiful country if only we could turn the clock back .what a mess we have made in the name of progress.
Sadly dont live in GY now.Was brought up there and spent many happy years there.Still get back now and again to watch Town.Miss the people Arr Kid, friendly wiv great sense of humour.Always got me memories, cant take them away.
lovely video, although I did`nt live here, i spent a lot of my life from early weeks of age, visiting Cleethorpes regularly. We used to have a caravan on Fitties camp and then a bungalow. We were there most weekends when younger and into our adult lifes with our own children too. Sadly we had to sell the bungalow when we lost our parents. I miss it so much, but I do still continue to visit Cleethorpes occasionally, it was like our second home. Special memories linger with me. :-)
Absolutely fantastic from beginning to end. I could have watched this for hours. I was born in 1968 in Grimsby Maternity hospital and brought up in Grimsby and Cleethorpes where i still live. Brilliant images. Many of them brought back so many happy memories and it was great to see what Grimsby and Cleethorpes was like well before i was born, a lot has changed but also a lot has stayed the same. Thanks so much for sharing.
ive grown up and lived in Grimsby all my life and find these photos sad and good all the same time .its sad that its all changed and for the worse have great memories at least the council and powers that be cant change that thanks for uploading these great memories very nostalgic ..
A truly amazing collection of photographs. I have watched this through twice now and love spotting old and new locations and how they have changed. I am from Grimsby. I have lived here all of my life and I am fascinated with Grimsby and its history. It is getting forgotten extremely fast. Thanks for sharing and I am sure I will watch again at some point.
I was born an raised in Cleethorpes. Not so many memory's now I can remember of my birth place. Time is a cruel mistress, she sucks the good life, memories out of you.. The last 60+ years I have lived in Asia Pacific mostly Australia. I could never return home. I have seen to much of the far east, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore. Australia & New Zealand. I am in the queue waiting my turn at 78yrs but now to old, to injured to travel home to my birth place. But I have enjoyed a good life for the most part. Now married to a loyal and devoted Chinese wife for twenty years born in Shanghai, grew up in Beijing and now and OZ citizen. All I have of my life is thousands of photos & videos some I have uploaded to you tube on "templemain" mostly for my Chinese family but you are welcome to visit if you wish.
Looks like a town with wealth from hard working people ,and now it looks like a town with the wealth given to the People with no hard work in them. And that’s progression
My maternal grandfather, Charles Lennox was a trawler man pre WW2. My father was Grimsby born and bred, whilst he was stationed at Binbrook in the early 60's we would go to Grimsby most weekends. Macauley Street, Haycroft Ave, taking Nan's emptys over the street to Cromes and getting her milk stout and Park Drive before the wrestling started, with a dip in the penny box as reward for a 5 year old doing an errand. Blundell Park floodlit matches in winter, with the smell of f&c, smoke and old coats. Sat Mat at the Odeon. Playing in the "square" at the back of Haycroft Ave and a kid digging up a small unexploded bomb in the couple of square yards of garden. There was a strange atmosphere to the area, the people all knew each other and front doors were often unlocked with friends coming and going, yet there was a sense of foreboding that seemed constant. I don't know why, maybe it was just me, wondering whether I was going to get lost again down one of the many alleyways.
I think it is, if you have a look at 38.30? There's the old Palace Buffet, then the Central Market with it's clock tower. To the right I think might be Lower Burgess Street, though I'm prepared to wrong on that.
39:05 can anyone work this picture out? (rail bridge and line branch) I can't make it work for Grimsby, the nearest I can get is Riby Sq, but there's no NatWest building, which I thought would predate this photo, that does look like Customs Hose bottom right though :o)
Not far out, it is the road crossing that was replaced by the flyover between ruby sq. and lock hill. The branch of the railway going off towards the lower left curves past the dock offices then crossed Union dock cutting on a swing bridge to gain access to the other side of the Royal Dock near Doig's slip. It also curved even tighter to the left near the offices to run along side the cutting and rounded the corner of the Alexander dock up to what is now the A 180 it used to be timber yards and sheds.
In fact I'm going to stick my neck out and say that picture isn't anywhere in town or Cleethorpes. The row of shops slightly set back to the right of the picture simply don't ring any bells whatsoever.
its cromwell road fella.....if your standing round about where liddles is now looking towards the petrol station (which is still there now) looking towards town way....the buildings set back next to the station included a Skeltons bakery and a bookies at one point i think....a bit further down on the right is wyndsors shoes....im a year late but your welcome haha :)
sorry, Im not sure which school this is. I though it was Nunsthorpe school at first but could be any one of the Grimsby/Cleethorpes schools. Looks like the mid to late 50s
