8 mm Footage of the old Hoover (pre-1967) as it was being replaced plus a few extras. Particularly note the beautiful young model in the 2009 still picture overlooking the Quad.

I prowled the old science building the day before its destruction was slated to begin and was amazed what had been left in the place. Desks, blackboards, fans, tables, chairs... all good, well-made stuff just being junked. I also found (and took home) some nice lab glassware, a big jar of mercury and another jar full of magnesium shavings; but the prize was a set of artificial wounds made of latex for disaster simulation exercises. I strapped onto my forearm the compound fracture, complete with tubes and a pump for spurting blood, and gave my mother a major trauma. Thanks for the memories! Jim Woodring, Class of '70

The film of the old Hoover being torn down was taken by Mr. Wilson, the music teacher.

I had Mr. Wilson in Music Appreciation, Concert Girl's Glee, early 1960's. Iconic building --several movies filmed here. Sad!

Wonderful to see the beautiful old Hoover buildings again -- and sad to see the demolition. And somehow Eleanor J. Toll Jr. High still stands. I wonder if the ghost of Joanna Heideman walks the halls at night.

I was across the street at Toll watching the new one go up! Started at Hoover in 71 - so missed the old building completely. Looking at the demo - it looked like un-reinforced masonry. Considering the what the quake did just a year or so later to brick houses built in that manner in the neighborhood, we were lucky they replaced it with more modern construction. The new part of the school came through un-touched. The quake almost took out the auditorium! Lost use of it for awhile.

I went there in 69,70, and 71. Wish they had a wood shop. They had auto shop though. The movie director Ron Underwood went there when I was there. Didn't know him though. I was supposed to go to Glendale High, but they changed the districts right before I went. I thought the people in that part of town were a little stuck up, to use a phrase that is probably passe by now.

I think Hoover was a pretty welcoming school. I don't remember being bullied or seeing others getting bullied. And I agree there wasn't much school spirit but maybe that was because of the "times". We were in high school at a pretty challenging time.

I was a deaf student in that Hoover High School in 1989. I wish someone could tell me where my old dream girl with long-do orange hair name Marcia was there, too. God, she had great legs and butt, too.

The names in the back of the auditorium are the names of the Stage Managers and the year they were in the position. Mine is up there from my term in 1971.

Why was it being replaced? At least there still IS a Hoover High. In my area there are several schools where nothing is left but a memory.

The old hoover was a beauty and seemed like the gem of the town. One more thing I would like to say is how come they didn't go with the same similar style as the old Hoover as in a indoor building. How come Toll didn't get renovated since it was built a while back ago also.

I remember sitting in math class at Toll watching the wrecking ball knock down the old Hoover. The next year when I went to Hoover one of the old buildings was still in use and I had an English class there. I remember thinking that I liked to old building better than the new.

+Jessica Fullerton correct me if im wrong, but was Hoover ever a typical high school? you know where the head cheerleader dates the quarterback, and the bully takes the point dexter's lunch money and stuffs them in lockers? Just curious because when I went to hoover, it was unlike what I expected, there was no bullying going on and everyone was accepted no matter what you were. But the sad part was that there was no school or class spirit.

As someone who is really in favor of the old I just have to say that the "old" hoover was the great hoover, the best hoover. The buildings nowadays just suck. The way the old hoover was built seems more spacious and it took a while to showcase all of it. I get why they did the remodel but I don't get why they didn't do a similar style. The style the current hoover is made on is nonexistent. I haven't seen a school similar to hoover. Surprised that Toll didn't get renovated or demolished.

@Decimator Omega I am in Toll and people here are stupid. _Not cruel,_ but stupid. They disrespect the teachers and don’t care about grades. But if one person is racist or sexist, the kids who don’t care about school, will turn on them and defend the victim. Also “nerds” are idolized by the kids who technically would classify as “bullies.” In the advanced classes at toll on the other hand, the people are very intelligent; they respect the teachers; and they care about grades. Honestly overall the school is very respectful of people their age, but not to their educators. Yet, these kids are still more politically informed than most adults. (Of course I’m biased on this because I go there, but from what I’ve seen adults just like to yell and scream at each other then get mad when they don’t win, and blame it on someone else.)

Would you have any videos on the fields and gyms on the old hoover by any chance? Also the destruction of the old hoover was really (in my opinion) the bad luck that came upon the new Hoover since most kids hate hoover now, they hate the teachers which suck also. The brand new field is the only thing really good about the school now. Heck the people even suck at Hoover.

The old buildings were more of a grand, traditional design, but they were not earthquake-resistant. The auditorium was part of the old school and in the 1971 Sylmar quake, it had to be closed for inspection. In fact, have a vague recollection of it remaining closed for sometimes afterwards for repairs, but I could be mistaken.
