Thank you for uploading this video it brought back many happy memories of Stockport, I was brought up in Romiley and used to visit Stockport in the 70s and 80s. The market was where mum and I used to love going it was a very busy vibrant place then where you could buy anything and everything, sad to see how much it’s changed 😢

Wow, @26:04. the 75 from Mersey Sq. bus terminus - looks like that picture dates from late 40s to early 50s judging from the skirt length? My mum moved us from the Manchester Council overspill estate in Langley to the new one built in Bramhall (we lived in Dane Close), during 1959 because (I learned later) she thought Langley was going downhill (I think she probably guessed right on that one). I recall shopping expeditions to Stockport using the 75 back and forth, holding her hand (I must have been 4 or 5 years old so that would be 1960-61) and standing outside Tittertons Butchers (on Princes Street I think) whilst she bought sausages and bacon. My mum is 97 years old now and still with us!

The 75 bus used to run from Mersey Square to the roundabout at Green end (Burnage) when I lived there in the 60's.

@@davidhamer8333 Maybe my memory is not as good as I thought - if the 75 ran from Mersey Sq. to Burnage (where I was born in 1956), it can't have gone anywhere near Bramhall but it was certainly a bus route with a 70 something number we travelled on. My mum passed away on Sunday 4th July, aged 98, the last of her generation in our family.

@@peterdavidson3268 Don't worry about it Peter, my memory isn't what it was either. Sorry you have lost your mum, shame we can't turn the clock back.

Soundtrack - Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells featuring Vivian Stanshall, Steve Hillage, Kevin Ayers and Mick Taylor all rock music legends! I had not heard this album in years what a wonderful work of art. Thanks for the memory's. Stockport 2022 you can still see many of the locations in this video. The town looks a lot cleaner and brighter now 🙂

One of my memories was how, after watching Stockport County play at Edgeley Park we would walk back to Mersey Square to catch our busses home. When there were about twenty of us we would walk down the Plazza Steps singing the County anthem, Aye oh County, County Ah oh! Great, memory jogging video.

Some views and places I'm not quite old enough to remember, many I certainly do. Not been back to Stockport for too many years now. Thanks so much for this wonderful collection and opportunity to wallow in nostalgia. Graham, Estepona, Costa del Sol.

The M&S and old Woolworths building has always been there since before merseyway precinct was built,ie when it was just a road running through. I.grew up in the 80's and remember the old gas towers ,i use to think in my 5 yr old head that they were dungeons that baddies got thrown in🙈🤭..Great to see how it all use to look ,great vid . Thanks

Back in the 1960's my dad was the manager of Howarth's army and navy stores. I think that was the name of the shop...........long time ago! The shop was on wellington road (mersey square)and I remember watching Stockport carnival from a room above the shop. Happy days!

We moved to Hazel Grove from Stretford in 1966 and I can just remember seeing the old fire station and later on in my teenage years drinking in the Warren Bulkeley (near the old Magistrate's Courts if I remember rightly)as well as Cobden's Place, the George and perhaps most memorably the Touchstone, now long buried under Denbenhams. I used to work at Gordon Ford in the mid '80s and can remember the Model T very well. I also worked at BSM in '89-'90. It was interesting to see the van (late '50s?) from White and Swales as Peter Swales went on to be the much abused Chairman of City. Mates of mine also recorded a demo tape at Hologram Studios in, I think, Park Street. Thanks for posting, many of the images are from the time my friends and I were starting to travel a little further afield than our local network of roads

they've done a great job in demolishing what was once, a thriving town and should have restored the old buildings rather than demolishing and giving planning to 50s, 60's to present day cheap monstrosities that are no only ugly, but will need o be demolished in 20 or so years. So many beautiful old buildings remain, they should enhance this and build new constructions sympathetically as has been done in other towns. they could also take down the precinct and mersey square, uncover once again the river mersey and have a tree lined walkway with a few well built brick or stone buildings along its banks for independent shops, cafes, bars - will bring life back in the town, a place people will travel to because it would be a nice place to be, and spend their time and money there, rather than away from because it is now so ugly, downtrodden, dystopian and assaults the senses. Stockport town planners need sacking.

Fascinating collection of old and new. Some observations/questions: 4:13 Presumable that mill beneath the arches has long since gone? 8:24 Flooding from flash flood/rain (not the river which is lower down)? 7:49 Remember that old bus station in Mersey Square in the 1970s. 12:50 Tram track on Brinksway 13:19 Cheadle Hulme on the bridge, but two bridges shown...where is that exactly? 16:29 That looks like Woolies in Bramhall. 16:35 Remember the Camera Exchange in the 1980s. 17:15 That looks like the precinct in Cheadle Hulme. 20:15 Great photo of works on the viaduct. 20:24 The Blossoms...still standing. 22:49 Trams before Ponsomby House, Council Offices, Courts and Police Station on Edward Street.

@@SuperRobo2010 Thanks for that, see it now on Google maps, just north of the Stagecoach bus Depot. I recognise the two bridges in Cheadle Hulme now, station road, station steps on the right.

Fantastic- stirred a few memories of my schooldays in the town nearly 50 years ago; was the Stockport FC keeper the legendary Albert Ogley ? I think so What it does show is that the new public and corporate buildings -plus the 'social housing' architects -have completely b**gger*d up a once-proud town Look at the quality old the old buildings (I worked in the Town Hall one summer ) and compare to the 60's-on
