A compilation of shots from a year to forget for the mainline steam scene due to the Covid 19 Pandemic. While this years video is not as action packed as last year's there's still some memorable scenes and good performances from the locos that feature. Saphos Trains and West Coast Railways remained the main players throughout the Pandemic although every tour from Saphos Trains was unfortunately diesel assisted and their trains play a big part in this compilation. Still without their effort and willingness to operate in such turbulent times this video would not of been possible, so a big thanks to Saphos Trains and as usual West Coast Railways for making the best of what's available. The first Quarter of 2021 will be more of the same unfortunately, but there is hope by late spring that some normality will return to the UK mainline steam scene.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and for good health in 2021 !
Locos featured
45562 Alberta
34046 Braunton

46100 Royal Scot
35018 British India Line

Who would have thought 50 years after steam disappeared from the UK main line we would be able to view this spectacle - In such fabulous detail ... I was born 1949 and saw a bit of the steam era.... Thanks you for all your endeavour and skill Liam .. as you say - we are all looking for to a safe, steaming 2021!

Three British Rail Mk1 coaches were added to the Bulmer's' Pullman coaches and fare paying passengers were allowed to travel on the train. It was done to prove that steam could work alongside the 'normal' railway - It was a challenge - But we did it!

Brian, clearly 1949 was a truly vintage year. I spent a lot of time in the late fifties and early sixties by the line side, and I am so grateful that we can still enjoy the sight and sound of these wonderful machines on the main line today. One little fly in the ointment, for me , is the frequent addition of a lump of pig iron, (oh ok, a diesel) hanging off the back of so many steam trains. I’m sure there are very sound operational reasons for this, but I just find it detracts a little from the authenticity of the occasion. Just a personal view! I had the experience of riding on a Cumbrian Mountain Express for the first time last August with Scots Guardsmen, twelve on, and no diesel was the icing on the cake of a scorching run. Thanks for a brilliant compilation, Liam, you brought me so much pleasure.

Men of a certain age are probably wondering why we had to wait nearly 60 years to see and hear these loco's. So refreshing to watch too without being cut to pieces, leaving less than a split second glimpse as the BBC always seem to do

I really enjoyed this video. I like that there is no commentary and especially no cheesy music. The words on the screen are exactly enough. The sounds of those locomotives has been just as well captured here as the sights. Excellent scenic views, so probably a lot of preparation into selecting camera location. Very good camera angles and none of the sort of panning that makes you feel ill! Great job. Let's hope that there will be a lot more subject matter for you to film in 2021.

Stanier Black Class 5 was the name for this workhorse of the steam days. Named because of their black livery. In the Midlands and in Lancashire they were known as Mickeys (as In Mick, not Mike). There were 840 odd made and 4 or 5 were named. You were considered to be a top train spotter if you got 3 or more 'Mickey Namers'. As I lived not far from Coventry we knew them by that name rather than Blackies, but today it's the reverse.

When I see these classic trains traveling, I always mute the sound and play "Last Train Home" by Pat Metheny on another RU-vid post. It's an incredible experience. Thank you! What an awesome upload! This gave me piece of mind. I have question for steam buffs. Why is there sometimes White smoke and at other times black smoke?
@adriannorris1486
@adriannorris1486 3 года назад
White smoke, or clear exhaust is a result of good combustion, a fireman on top of his job, and coal being used efficiently, the odd puff of black smoke means the fireman has added fresh coal.........thick black smoke indicates a fire overloaded with unburnt coal, poor draughting, and inefficient combustion, also, as a result, the loco is probably not steaming very well.....this is not always the fault of the fireman, some engines in certain circumstances can make even a superb fireman look very foolish. Some photographers have been known to request “clag”, (as thick black smoke is known) at certain points en route, but this is officially frowned upon, quite rightly so in my view.

Actually, from what I’ve heard those diesels are there to run the power systems in the coaches, as well as to provide dynamic braking to comply with railway safety codes and as a back-up in case the main locomotive fails. As far as the actual pulling end hauling, that’s all the steam locomotive.

Worse still, the Llangollen Railway suffered a severe vandal attack. The rake of Blood & Custard coaches had windows smashed and seats ripped up, plus empty alcohol bottles were left behind. I'm just praying the West Somerset Railway won't become the next victim of vandalism. If any harm should befall my beloved Foxy, I don't know what I'll do without her. Can we talk about the lack of Diesels on the back? Is this because of the plague or is it because the railways are going nationalised again, or something else? I'm not complaining this is the way it should be! I'm hoping it's because steam engines have proven to be reliable enough to be out on their own. Thanks in advance for anybody taking the time to answer.
@MarshSteamVideosTM
@MarshSteamVideosTM 3 года назад
For operational reasons only. A diesel is usually taken for turning of the train at some locations, or if the railway station is a dead end terminus and the train needs dragging back out. Sometimes if another locomotive is replaced with an inferior loco and is placed on a heavy train it will sometimes help on departures or recovering from signal checks or going up a steep hill, this is so it keeps to time. No diesel is put on the back because a steam loco might break down, the locos either fit for the mainline or its not.

OK, if you're happy seeing 13 or 14 coaches pass the lens, preceded by one or two generally anonymous steam loco's . . . . which it seem's your mostly amazingly uncritical viewers are . . . . . . just a shame you don't use appropriate lenses and get some decent focused Loco close up's. ID'ing locos in print shouldn't forgo pictorial confirmation / presentation, seem's far too much 'at any cost' filming here with total disregard for appropriate weather conditions. 'At any cost' should mean using the weather forecast to locate the good weather, then go there, and use it. Very few films here, if any wd find buyers on the open market, probably due too many proverbial pats on the camera holders back in the foregoing comment's. After all if the majority are happy with this standard of filming why should you change just to get better?

I am Australian so while we're having so far in our southeast (Melbourne) a cool summer, it's the case that most parts of my nation receive more sunny days than the UK typically does. Surely Liam and Phil filming in challenging weather shows the rail network and in this case steam trains at their best: performing a transport service (or a railfan tour!) pretty much whatever the weather. Climate variability adds interest. And may I point out that it's great that they video the whole train - terrific that on occasion locos without diesel assistance are allowed in consultation with Network Rail to haul 11 or 12 cars such as beautifully shown at 34:00. To describe the steam locos as 'anonymous' is silly. The various classes have much differentiation, and the colour schemes adopted by the various owners are not identical - far from it. As a widely travelled railfan, I perceive the UK leads the world in preserving railways and in operating mainline steam, and again may do so later in 2021 if officialdom decrees that lockdowns can end and life return to some sort of normality. Sadly, yours was a very unreasonable post. I'm sure many would join with me in expressing heartfelt thanks to these 'film makers' who selflessly are out on the main or branch lines recording railway history, given that your UK preserved locos sometimes do not again operate once the 10 yearly boiler certificate ends, or when an owner decides to withdraw a loco, as we saw with 60009 if I'm not mistaken.

@Peter Roberts Each to their own but you plainly have a very limited view of what makes good video. There's more to videography than being so close to the train you can see the whites of the driver's eyes. Try researching "steam in the landscape," it may just open your eyes. As for "disregard for appropriate weather conditions," that gave me a good laugh. I presume you must be a fair weather photographer. Well I've news for you, a good photographer portrays his subject in all weather conditions. Go take a look at Colin Gifford's work as an example.
