Trailer for the 1995 anime omnibus film, 'presented' by Katsuhiro Otomo (who also directed the third and final segment). "Magnetic Rose", one of the shorts within the film was written by Satoshi Kon.
A lot of anime is still hand drawn it's just the mix of the cell-process, physical painting & drawings (versus most drawing/painting being done digitally now) and the capture of said images on film that set apart older works and give them a unique feeling and sensation
Man, this film is such an underrated classic. Magnetic Rose is just a masterpiece of psychological horror, Stink Bomb is a hilarious and dark satire, and Cannon Fodder...I don't even know what to say about that, but the ending just gave me chills. There really needs to be more films like this and Robot Carnival. Just a bunch of talented animators and storytellers making short films and showcasing them together under a certain theme.
1:49 “Memories aren’t an escape” Funny fact is that Satoshi Kon, the scriptwriter, actually hated this line because it’s too explicit for him and he was embarrassed every time when he saw this scene as TV commercial.
@@cliffwizz4071 Lame? just because you don't like first person shooter doesn't mean other people wont like it or the game will be bad. Keep your opinion to yourself and let others do the same. Thank you.
I had a pirated disk of this that my dad got when he was a student. I watched it countless times as a kid not having a single idea what was going on. It was trippy and I still remember it well. It creeped me out as a child and that feeling was indescribable
I just bought a double feature ..It includes MEM0RIES along with METROPOLIS for only a dollar at DOLLAR TREE. I haven't been to that store for almost a year. This was a great find. Opened it and it's the real deal.
You watch things like this and laugh at anyone who denies that animation, overtime, even outside of Japanese animation, has gotten WORSE over time, not better. It has declined. Look at the absolute surgical precision and attention to detail in the animation. You don't see that anymore. It's pleasurable to look at. It doesn't look cookie cutter. This is the style that I consider anime.
its because back then animation got paid propperly and they had a lot of time to work with, today people demand product product product. Animation is very time consuming and the animators need to get paid. I agree with you that the art of animation is getting slaughterd.
"and laugh at anyone who denies that animation has gotten WORSE over time, not better" it depends of what you're watching + you can't compare a movie budget with a series budget. Madoka Movie 3 has splendid animations. Violet Evergarden has wonderful animations. Dark Crystal Age of Resistance has top notch animations. Spiderman Into the Spider-verse too. Demon Slayer is sick. etc... also not everything is about animation. a good story, good musics and good characters make a good series/movie even with shitty animation, and the opposite is also true.
AI algorithms will take care of it. Give it about another decade, and they will have an AI that can cut animation times down even more. If you don't believe me, you should really be following a lot of AI projects. It's impressive what we've been able to do over just the last 7 years.
The RU-vid copyright automation has muted the sound for this ADVERTISEMENT for this movie? This is too far. It's an ad. Telling you to purchase the film. But the sound is muted because it violates copyrights on the film. What holy hell has this century drifted into?
Riightt! I have never once gotten that RU-vid error until now. What the hell. That's a very specific thing to censor, yet still show the full video, or in this case trailer.
and people are getting sued for listening to songs at cookouts and reunions too. if you buy it its your business what you do with it or use it for. seriously need to be rewritten
I used to watch this trailer as one of the extras on the “Spider-Man: the new animated series” dvd. Ngl this trailer scared the crap out of me and still gives me an uneasy feeling.
I saw this once in my life back when I was a kid. I only remember a couple of these scenes but I do remember Stink Bomb had me in tears laughing the whole time because his farts killed everyone
it's funny that I remembered this movie so vividly but I couldn't for the life of me remember the name of the movie. I did every Google search I could think of using terms to describe what happens in the movie but no luck. It was one of the first movies I rated on my Netflix so I sorted my rated movies from oldest and finally I noticed Memories. It's so funny that it's named memories when my memory couldn't come up with the title but I remember enjoying the movie so much I really wanted to watch it again after all these years lol
Took my breath away. That entire segment might have actually been my favorite, just for its muted tone, striking visual style and rattlingly bleak allegory.
This same video os one of the things i witnessed alone when i was only 10 on youtube, and it just blasted my whole way of thinking and existing ever since that day. Truly one minute of pure emotions
As a '90s Japanese kid, I wonder if young anime fans from around the world have seen this classic anime movie. I can't forget when I saw it at the movie theatre in Tokyo or somewhere with my brother. They gave me a free gift, an animation cel. Dang, I miss those days.
Watching this movie for the first time, and a couple things stuck out to me Part 1: The spaceship is called the "Corona" Part 2: The opening scene shows the main character wearing a mask
I loved Cannon Fodder, it has such a dark theme to it. The people from that world had lost all hope and just live in a pointless system that somehow society came to embrace in the past. The war itself is just an excuse to make part in some kind of "patriotic cause" just like the 1984 movie. Even the art style of that episode is very rough and somehow devoid of any beauty just like the world those people live in. Fantastic piece of art!
i found Magnetic Rose to be an all time masterpiece, spectacular movie. the 2nd movie Stink Bomb was really stupid. Now Cannon Fodder some think it was stupid, but i thought it was a good movie, an 8. The meaning/morale of the story was the best. a war that people dont even see, that is meaningless not even knowing if their IS an enemy at all.
It's sad how this series end with tragic note due to people believing, 'tragic end is more horrifying but oftentimes, it comes off as dissatisfied and disappointing.
Weird that anime devolves as time goes on, nothing looks like this anymore. IN 90's and 80's you could find this quality everywhere. Now the biggest francise licences like Dragon Ball are created in a month, looking like shit.
Nobody cares anymore. People just want the next new thing and they want it now. Endless superhero movies endless meaningless pop songs. Nobody has time for art anymore. People working 60, 70 or 80 hour weeks just to get by. They don't have the time or energy to sit and take in a piece of art (regardless of the medium) and consider how it moves them. People are glued to social media and it has made them considerably dumber. There are movies that are masterpieces that could be described as "Slow Burns" but most people will just describe it as boring. If there isn't a million flashing lights with bells and whistles and a narrative that reassures them that their convenient little lives are safe and secure, people don't want to hear about it.
@sec0ndevolution I think it's just "Well, that's a day in the life of this militaristic state. Good night!" It felt a lot like "Order to Stop Construction" where they had an amazing first third of a three-act story and then it just stopped abruptly.
I saw an AMV on CuteMX back in 2000 and had to find it. Ended up the soundtrack, and unofficial VCD that could only read in a Plextor drive and a DVD that had issues on most DVD players before Pioneer released the official version. All three had different subs.
My god the animation, what a master piece this is. People have no idea just how much incredible manga/anime Katsuhiro Otomo actually did way before 88 Akira movie. From Domu, to Akiras manga all the way back in 1982. Then you have his artistic help with metropolis, this and steamboy even? The man is much more than just the 1988 Akira movie, his work is much older than others seem to know and I didn't even mention Neo tokyo or his influence for Akira "fireball".
Tubi has alot of good flicks like this.. I will be this watching later.. my favorites are still the heavy hitters like , AKIRA, SPRIGGAN, NINJA SCROLL... etc..
It was actually. The fun loving party time days of the 80's were over and western society woke up with a hangover and got handed the bill. People were disillusioned and directionless. You really get a sense of the feeling when you listen to grunge from that era.
@torkuostar He has a very traditional view on power and the role of government in his films, yes. But he isn't oblivious to the element of the young generation, or the dying generations of old. So to say that is views are irrelevant would be a mistake.
I tell myself, everything turns into shit here, the corona pulls us to the bottom of the mud, I watch some good anime, relax a little, turn off the brain, Memories 1995 ... not in two minutes I see Corona ... shit.
