Great song. A few years ago, the lead singer of this group, Colin Hey, did a solo acoustic version of this song on a solo album of his. No surprise, it’s fantastic and I can’t decide which version I like better.
@@williamdemerchant7295 The simpler production of the acoustic version is more powerful, stripping the '80s style production away, revealing the core of the song.
From their 2nd album from 1983, "Cargo", this Australian band received world wide fame after their first album won them a Grammy for Best New Artist. Overkill was a song about their rising fame, coming out of their comfort zone and leaving their home area where you know everything. It was used in the Season Two opener of the TV show " Scrubs" in 2002 which gave it tremendous exposure. Just a great song, with the wonderful instrumentation, traditional and enduring appeal. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Rob Taylor. Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
I saw them live in Norfolk, Virginia some time in the early 80s. They sounded great, with a louder more garage rock band sound than the albums but done really well and loud. They should have recorded that tour and made a live album. If I hadn't been there I never would have guessed they rocked that hard live in person. And it seemed like they had a great time and the audience loved it.
One of my favorite MaW songs. This has helped me through my own issues with depression, or being alone. Even during COVID lockdown, this song helped me.
I was 12 when I bought this album, this song was my first experience with vocabulary that described the way my mind worked and reaffirmed for me that one, I was not alone in this experience, and two, that ghost appear, but they also fade away, it was oddly comforting, it's still one of my favorite songs of all time ❤
Still mad about when I got disabled! I worked at a music club in California and I went basically blind overnight (turned out to be an Autoimmune illness) 3 weeks after that he played the club and he hungout with the employees! I would have been there if I was working so I missed out at meeting him!
My favorite song of theirs but for years I heard the lyrics wrong. When they sing Ghosts appear and fade away. I thought they sang GO SIP BEER AND FADE AWAY. Lol.
Saw him do a solo acoustic show in Vegas, small venue maybe 100 people. Great Show, Very Intimate. He has also toured with RIngo Starrs Taveling Stars Band
Men At Work are an Australian rock band formed in1978. Their biggest hits were "Who Can It Be Now?" & "Down Under". They had some other songs such as "Be Good Johnny", "Dr. Heckyll & Mr. Jive", "Everything I Need", "Maria", "The Longest Night" etc. Men At Work performed "Down Under" at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, alongside Paul Hogan of "Crocodile" Dundee.
Colin Hay has some 15+ solo albums out there - including acoustic versions of the MAW songs which go to a whole new level. (Down Under LIVE on Al Porter/Today FM) is the perfect example. Goosebumps.). Great story teller in song and on stage. His voice has gotten richer, loaded with the melancholy life lends. The documentary of his life (WAITING FOR MY REAL LIFE) will win you over in a heartbeat.
I saw "Men At Work" in concert back in the mid 80's.They had burst onto the MTV scene and cranked out 3 or 4 popular hits that had me wanting more. In hindsight, I wish I had saved the money. After they played their hits there wasn't much more worth hanging around for. They just didn't have the catalog of good songs to keep the vibe going. "Overkill" is my favorite of theirs and I hadn't heard it in years. Thanks, Rob and Harri!
I don't disagree in the slightest, except... I requested that one before this one! Harri reacted to that one earlier in the month, so it's out there for you to enjoy already.
Harri, great reaction as always, lead vocalist Colin Hay is a fellow Scot born in the Ayrshire town of Troon before emigrating to Australia around the age of 11, he never forgets his Scottish roots, fantastic singer/songwriter, band and songs. Well done Sir.
A theme that all of us can relate. This genius song from Colin Hay was used in the sit-com "Scrubs" so perfectly. This song so resonates with me. I bought this album when it first came out and appeared on MTV when it was originally about music TV.
Colin Hay is brilliant. Check out some of his solo live stuff. Quite the storyteller and one he'll of a musician. Not much he doesn't play. His parents owned a music store and that is where he grew up
Agree - that combo of Scottish infused Aussie years now Californian made a musician who sings stories from the soul -- freely to and for anyone that will listen.
I’d been waiting MONTHS if not YEARS since the pandemic started, to see Colin Hay on tour in the US. Had my ticket…got COVID. He’s a brilliant artist, long after Men at Work were done but you can’t mistake him, can you?
Never been to Australia ! My young sister used to go there with her 2 daughters and husband , every year because her Husband s family from Holland all moved there down under ! Well the other reason is thry have the money to do so she s a lawyer for a huge company ! Anyway ! I haven t heard that since many decades now ! it s nice to hear it again ! thanks !🙃
Yes, I agree. Colin did a terrific cameo on the show, "Scrubs", singing this song with a single guitar, and it was a funny scene, but it actually got released on CD because it was so good.,😮
His age gives him more “license” for the theme and the raspier voice works. Still sings so well. He did this song on the Jimmy Fallon show with Roots. Superb! About 20 seconds in, Quest Love just smiles a great smile to be live in this situation. Touching, actually.
Always Johnny be good by a minute work always like that Donnie be good Ah yeah never really thought about That dude It would be A hard 12 Is hard 12 replies for sure😅
a band called Lazlo Bane did a cover of this song with a video .. without saying any thing more about it .. I hope you watch that video and givea reaction and your thoughts of it because I THINK you'll love it.
Be honest that was not the first time you’ve heard that song. You mentioned the part about him going high before the song had gotten there. At least be honest about your reaction.
