@@thederpyturnip6330 no, it IS the technology. I have worked with those pieces of garbage starting blocks and they are a giant pain in the arse. As I stated, we did just fine for DECADES without them, relying on highly skilled officials to start the sprints with nary a single issue whatsoever. Now we have to be “fancy” and utilize a piece of highly unreliable technical equipment to supposedly get the job done more accurately. I say supposedly because there are a lot of instances where it truly ISN’T more accurate.

"The 100 ms limit is based on research from the 1990s in which the total response time of eight male Finnish sprinters was investigated [2]. The average response time between the start signal and reaching a value of 110% of the force exerted on the starting blocks in the ‘ready’ position was 121 ms with a standard deviation (typical variation) of 14 ms for the front leg and 119 ms with a standard deviation of 11 ms for the rear leg (Figure 1). A limit of 100 ms should, on the basis of these results, ensure that most correct starts are not incorrectly labeled false, while most real false starts are disqualified. However, no elite sprinter was investigated in this study. It is possible that elite sprinters react faster than sub elite sprinters, so the lower limit of 100 ms may not be correct for use at international top matches. Furthermore, the response time in this study was not measured in a race situation, while athletes in a race situation may respond faster due to increased arousal and motivation. The question that arises is therefore whether it is possible to respond to the start signal within 100 ms." That rule is so dumb ffs

I disagree. If you start 0.01s after the gun, you obviously anticipated because the nervous system cannot transmit the information in such a short period of time. Not long ago there used to be the 2 false start rule in which if an athlete false started it was charged initially to the entire field. If there was another false start following that, then that specific athlete was disqualified. I feel we should go back to that rule again for maybe a FINALS of a particular sprint event. Fans pay a lot of money at elite level track meets to see their favorite elite level athletes compete. Yes there's a lot of pressure and anxiety especially in a finals of a particular sprint event and no one is absolutely perfect. Mistakes are made. By allowing 1 false start for the entire field you alleviate the tension sprinters may have and will allow them to focus so that they don't make that mistake again and it also gives the fans their money's worth to see their favorite athletes compete. I say this b/c in 2011 I went to Daegu to watch Usain Bolt compete in the World Championships 100 meter final. I paid a lot of money including airfare, accommodations, transportation and food only to have him false start out of it. This silly rule is hurting track and field not helping it

This one still bugs me. I understand the need for a false start system, I know exactly how it works. But reaction time? And not just reaction time, but by a thousandth? Hell, I'd say we call a +/- .005 if we're going to be so nitpicky. More than that, the fact that we're limiting reaction time in a sport where your time and place are dependent on how quickly you react as much as how fast you run is completely bogus. We should not train people to react to a gun and then penalize them for doing just that. We clearly have the technology to tell when your foot moves on the pad. At no point should we need to be judging how fast you can do that *after* the gun goes off. And, as a more selfish note from a US track point of view, having Devon Allen in that race would have had trickle down effects that brought more people to watch the sport, more people to join the sport. We are seriously shooting ourselves in the foot on trying to grow track and field.

I hope world athletics knows that their dumb DQ rules ruined this event. Oregon 2022 was great but this event was a disappointment. Only ever call back a race if somebody starts BEFORE the gun. If somebody is in the "reaction time window" simply give them a time penalty. Since Devon Allen started 0.001 before the 0.1 second window, add 0.001 to his time at the end. Easy.

That false start rule exists for a very good reason. A while back it was commonplace for athletes to purposely false start, to play mind games with their competitors. This was considered an unnecessary act of poor sportsmanship and thus the “one and you’re done” rule was instituted. It has leveled the playing field for all running events in the sport. What needs to be eliminated is the asinine electronic starting blocks. They serve absolutely no purpose other than to take the decision away from highly skilled and supremely experienced officials.

Watch the video frame by frame and you will see that the athlete in lane 4 lifts his fingers off the line before Allen in lane 3.... ie. starting slightly ahead of Allen. Perhaps Allen's equipment sent a false signal, but in any case the video illustrates that Allen did not start before everyone else, and therefore did not false start, and should not have been disqualified. What we have here is adjudicators relying solely on equipment signals without any double check via review of the video footage. We also have a ridiculous rule which, when followed blindly by officials, can result in the very best athletes being disqualified for no good reason. These events take months to prepare for, and such effort needs to be recognized and not dismissed with such disregard. No athlete deserves to be disqualified because their reaction is too quick to the start signal, only if their action happens before the start signal. If they stick to this absurd system, and don't review video footage in such cases, then we are going to get more such unfair disqualifications, because it's perfectly clear that in this case it was not the athlete that was at fault, but the system which unfairly disqualified him.

Stupid rules - gun goes off is a point in time - athlete leaves at a point in time - if one follows the other, then the athlete is good to go - simple - why make it complicated and controversial with an arbitrary, unscientific parameter. The athlete can actually legitimately start after the gun has gone off and before the sound has physically registered in his brain. There is a part of the brain that can be used in crisis situations like being attacked by a lion so that instead of quickly thinking how to react you just react which is quicker and can mean the difference between dead or alive. Bizarrely, when younger, I could use this brain function to answer mental agility tests with numbers - I could actually start answering a question before I had heard all of it - and I could freak some people out by doing so.
