The legendary "Sweater Game" between the Georgetown Hoyas and the St. John's Redmen. This was the first-ever game between #1 and #2-ranked men's college basketball teams at Madison Square Garden. Len Berman and Bill Raftery have the call.
The Hoyas won the game convincingly, 85-69, behind Reggie Williams' 25 points and Patrick Ewing's 20 pts and 6 blocks.
Chris Mullin scored 21 pts and Walter Berry had 16 pts for St. John's.

Never get this era back. College basketball in the 80s was at it's peek.

The throwing of the "red & white" toilet paper after Chris Mullin and St. John's first score. Boy I miss those days.😢😂

What a great time for Big East basketball. To hear the building that would eventually make him their favorite son booing Ewing was unreal. Chris Mullin was easily among the best players in the country. Walter Berry was another stud for sure.

What was impressive of the Big East was it's competitive balance. There were truly no nights off.

The Big East was so blockbuster that their coaches were household names
@rjam1974
@rjam1974 2 месяца назад
There were loads of household named coaches back then obviously the Big East ones but also ACC's Dean Smith, Lefty D, Valvino, Bobby Cremins, Coach K . Beautiful time. Each coach you knew their brand of basketball and the players they recruited.

And Patrick Ewing would play the majority of his Hall of Fame career in that very building. He would later coach Georgetown to a Big East crown.

About 7 future NBA players in this game and 2 future HOF's in Ewing and Mullin. It's really a shame how much the Big East and just College Basketball in general has fallen off.

Chris Mullin I'm used to seeing his crew cut hairstyle. He had a bumpy start to his career with the alcohol yet turned himself into a Hall of Famer. He too would one day coach his alma mater.

That was one country a** kickin'. Thompson had them so ready for this, and the BE Final... Oh yeah, and in the national semifinal.

@@raygordonteacheschess5501True in a sense, but who could have been? I'd put that more in the category of fate. No team since then has shot that well in a natty. Thompson had a good game plan ( I thought he should have pressured Gary McLain more) but what can be done against a team that can't miss? As Thompson said before the game, I don't bet on the horse, I bet on the jockey, Massimino. Rollie said "if we can keep the game in the 50's we have a chance." Well executed, few t/o's, and superb field goal %. Too bad.

@@raygordonteacheschess5501 that was also the last NCAA game without a shot clock. Rollie Massimino admitted years later, that if he dared tried getting into a running game with Georgetown in that game, they would've easily lost by 20. The stall game took the Hoyas completely of how they wanted to play.

@@MusicManSeanB There were also a couple of other factors that benefited Villanova. Since they were in the same conference as Georgetown they were familiar with them and there wasn't that large intimidation factor. They knew GU was tough, but they had played them pretty close that year so they thought they could hang with them. Also, 85 was the first year the tournament expanded to 64 teams and Villanova barely got in. Rollie admitted that if had been under the old 53 team tournament, they wouldn't have gotten in. They got a new lease on life and that charged them up. Kansas had something similar happen in 88 against Oklahoma. Halfway into February they weren't sure they would even get into the NIT, they were playing that bad. They turned it around to get a 6th seed and again because they played OU twice, they weren't intimidated. Those senior laden teams in the 80s were unbelievable. So skilled and tough. Loved the old Big East.

Ewing should've been BANNED from basketball, for trying to take Chris Mullin's head off - with his shoulder, when Chris was moving WITHOUT the ball at 30-26 and then pushing him to the floor! Typical dirty...no - FILTHY Georgetown play! Ewing drove Chris to the wooden floor, but Chris got the last laugh, by beating-out Ewing for the WOODEN AWARD!! Congrats, Chris!!
