Marvelous as always. My picks are: Clint Eastwood’s poncho as the Man with No Name, Keanu Reeve’s Matrix coat, and George Clooney in Ocean’s 11. Or anybody’s suit in Ocean’s 11, the costume designer made Carl Reiner look sexy.❤️

David Bowie's costumes as Jareth, the Goblin's king in "Labirynth" were fabulous and so "him", if you can understand me. And, oh! the armors in "Excalibur", so purposefully out of the time of the story! But also Merlin's costume in the same movie, almost Sci-Fi, more than fantasy. And, like some others said, Eastwood's poncho in Leone's movies and Neo's coat in "The Matrix". Or Ben Hur's iconic leather tunic during the chariots race. And ALL men's costumes of "The Princess Bride".

Brando wore the white T-shirt as outerwear way sooner than James Dean. Dean may be more iconic, but Brando should still get a shout out for donning the white tee in Streetcar named Desire and starting the craze.

My pick: Marty McFly "future" outfit in Back to the Future II.

How could you have left out Cary Grant and his impeccable tailoring in North by Northwest?

Costner's and Connery's costumes from The Untouchables were awesome too! I think the designer was Armani. First Knight costumes were excellent too -- royal blue velvets with yellow gold piping, armor, etc. Stage sets were also coordinated with that royal blue to make a cohesive visual whole. A Room with a View had spectacular 1890's white summer cotton gowns, interesting traveling costumes, linen coats, etc. Those costumes beautifully expressed its era and the countries in which action takes place like Florence, Italy and back home in England.

So wonderfully researched and highly interesting! It's not often I watch a RU-vid video as long as this but it was worth every second!

No Clark Gable, Cary Grant, or Sean Connery as Bond?

I think this men's costume video more than the women's costume videos really helps understand the sheer amount of work that goes into distressing costumes for film. That would be an interesting video topic for geeks like me. Same reason why a lot of history re-enactors just don't look like they've hopped off the pages of history books: Their clothes look brand new, when most people outside the very small ruling class could only afford a completely new outfit every several years, and a lot of people in the past plain out bought theirs secondhand and altered them to their needs to save a big penny. (I made my Victorian walking dress for an RPG convention from my grandmother's old velvet curtains. In retrospect, butchering antiques like that was a bit harrowing, but I was like 16 and had no judgment back then. Wish I could have my old metabolism back, though, the waistline of that dress was a scant 19" without a corset. These days, my waist is 34" on a good day. lol)

I always thought Indiana Jones merged Bogart’s fedora with Brando’s leather jacket look to give Ford a serious/rebellious look that perfectly fit the professor/adventurous archeologist’s personality to a T.

The weirdest thing about Braveheart is that the princess' outfits are some the most historically accurate medieval outfits ever, with her veils, hairstyle and coif. So I wonder if the trolling theory is actually true and they tried to spare the poor princess of it.

I would love to see a follow up video about more men's fashion in the future. There are so many great costumes of male characters nobody ever talks about. Two that came to my mind while watching this video: Jean Reno as Léon and Raúl Juliá as Gomez Addams.

Liked this video and the women’s costume video. Are there no minority costumes/iconic movies? IE Shaft, Superfly, Poetic Justice, as a representation of “street culture” and The Last Emperor or Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, as a representation of many styles of Asian culture through the years and as the west sees Asia.

First of all, thank you for this as I admit I'm even more ignorant of men's costuming than I am women's. Oh, wow, I did not know that height trivia fact. Masculinity stereotypes/ideals embedded in that much? One thing that we all take for granted unless it's something in our field is how /hard/ it is to actually make something look effortless/simple. And it's a really interesting thing about early B&W to color works-completely different techniques when it comes to needing particular contrasts but it's interesting that it transitioned so well. I wonder if they had to make any adjustments because of it when the switch was decided. And this is what I get for writing comments as I listen as you mention the jeans dying. I would be lying if I said I didn't love those boots. Your design sheet for 'Arabia makes me wonder if you have a top list of costume concept art. Holy hannah if that isn't the definition of making a lot with a little with that kind of budget I don't know what is! I love stories like that. Some of My favorite mens costumes that aren't already on the list are newt scamander's costume with the blue coat from fantastic beasts and Where to Find Them, prince kit's green hunting uniform from Cinderella (2015), anything Gene Kelly wears as Don lockwood in singing in the rain, the tin man, scarecrow, and the lion from wizard of oz, Darth Vader from star wars, Professor Harold Hill's salesman costume from the beginning of Music man, and Edward scissorhands from the movie of the same name

8:42 It's interesting in the cut of the sample shown and the screenshot beside it, how different the style was then, and how it's come back around. For a men's shirt the underseam (in the armpit area) is cut really short compared to an "average" man's modern t shirt wherein that seam is much lower and the sleeve itself is at least three inches longer. An average men's shirt comes to my elbow and is horribly unflattering. I prefer this cut ( I mean, look at James there, swooon!) But I think this came back in the form of the cap sleeve for women, generally. The only difference is the angle on which the outer fabric is cut. I wish they still made them like this. Yes, both men and the shirts, lol.

In the 1800s they had type of trench coat. It was called a Duster. Long with the shoulders covered with an extra layer of material. It was a lot of the times made of Leather.

I was personally impacted by Saturday Night Fever. At the time my friend, Roy Madrid, had taught Travolta the Hustle for the movie. When a SoCal paper published a story about my friend overnight he was bombarded by all the media. We were living together & teaching disco in nightclubs & auditoriums. When Roy was offered a wardrobe of gaberdine instead of polyester the fashionistas picked up on it and all the disco regulars started buying gab pants. For a short time we lived a charmed existance.
