Men Without Work: Key Findings - Dr. Nicholas Eberstadt 

There are a ton of jobs out there. Many more than there are people... It's that these jobs have no room for advancement, no promotion, no benefits or career path and low pay. Who wants to participate in a society that sees you as disposable? Not me.

You can ignore reality.. but you cannot ignore the consequences of ignoring reality..

This is what the breakdown of the traditional family and the "liberation" of women gets you.

This trend will continue. Life has become mundane and dull, so have we. Skill has been replaced by technology, so have we. Nothing left to do but let the fruits of our labor render us obsolete. Perhaps a war or economic collapse will give us purpose again? We will flourish when we are needed.

I can't help watching this and thinking of discussions that I have been having with Trekkies and a friend who believe that it will be so wonderful when or if society reaches a point when everyone's basic needs will be taken care of and no one will have to work. They believe that most people will self improve academically, professionally, and spiritually by solely their own initiative. I believe that most people in such a world will be like the men that he is speaking of in this lecture. I can't believe that anyone would think that once everyone's basic needs were met and work would be unnecessary that most people wouldn't spend most of their time with leisure activities.

I have two conjectures. First, the data sources show only those people who hold or desire "legitimate" jobs. It is highly likely that most "inactive" people are in fact engaged in under the table work and are not reporting that work. Second, as our economy becomes more productive, more people are able to lead a "non-consumer" lifestyle. Food, basic clothing, and out of big cities, housing has become relatively cheaper. For some, time is valued over money. Over time worker productivity increases and less income is necessary to provide the basics of life.

The problem is Not uniquely American, We have the same kind of problem in Europe, its even worse, no work for anyone.

I wonder if there are social circles where everyone in the group are unemployed and discourage each other from participating in activities that would be productive. Or if these are individuals that are making independent decisions. This would be important to know if you want to change the situation.

The intro music reminds me of Saving private Ryan.

At 33:20 he mentions the rate of leaving men does not match up with the boom and bust cycles and yet he mentions why that may be the case earlier when he said that women started entering the workplace as a reason for why this wasn't noticed earlier. I get the feeling that his personal politics/ideology are preventing him from analysing his own data.

I can't believe there are no comments from this video. Anyway, how do we change the values of men in America? How can instill the values of immigrant in the souls of native born American men? I'm reading Dr Eberstadt book now and I find it freighting.

Or could it be just pure laziness! In otherword's bottom feeders!!!!
