If I might play devil's advocate for a minute, as of the present (Feb. 2022) the Superchief Lionchief set is going for $430, with an MSRP from Lionel at $499, and I've seen higher. I'd also like to know if the test track was level for the pulling test, and whether both engines had traction tires on or not. If one did and the other didn't, that would skew the results. All that said, I'm willing to give Menards a shot and see what the final production version is like before calling in any judgements. I will say, however, that I do have some hopes for it, as it would be nice to have a reasonable little engine available at a reasonable price brand new for O gauge. Not everyone has a giant layout and/or a giant pocketbook, so affordable rolling stock and engines would be greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU for replying with a different viewpoint. I am pinning your comment so others can see it more easily. 1) To your first point, CamelCamelCamel lists the average price on Amazon as $351.73. The price I paid at $209.00 seems like a major outlier which I have never seen before and I try to keep a close eye on Lionel Deals. 2) the track is relatively level. That is, there is no intentional grade I just may not be that great at carpentry. 😁 3) All three locomotives had their original traction tires. The Beta 3.5 and Lionel were brand new with little run time. 4) Please give Menards a shot. My hope is that their products improve over time which is not likely if no one buys them. This may seem contradictory to the message of my video. But someone can be supportive while also being critical/educated about the product. 5) "it would be nice to have a reasonable little engine available at a reasonable price brand new for O gauge" I agree and if anyone is going to do it, it will be Menards. Thank you for such an engaging perspective.

Menards isn’t looking to be the next MTH or Lionel they just want to make trains affordable for the entry level enthusiast. I would rather let a kid play with a Menards Santa Fe then a Lionel Santa Fe. It’s kind of why Lionel made the large plastic sets. I do feel that a lot of you influencers are not the right people to review them because you tend to compare them to the more expensive models. Do I expect that Menards train to pull 20 brick train cars .. NO . I expect it to run around my tree with 3 or 4 cars and if my kid knocks it over its not like tipping of a Harley Davidson Bike. Great video continued success. Just remember your audience is not all 2000.00 Big Boy locomotive owners . Most of us can’t afford them.

Hey Mr Sam, thank you for your comment. I agree with much of what you're saying. At the end of the day, these beta's were not all that affordable when compared to Lionel. If the Menards engines can be picked up for closer to $100.00 they will truly be in a class of their own. But at nearly $200.00, Menards is competing with Lionel. Right now, you can get Lionel Thomas Engines with a remote and Bluetooth for less money than the Menards loco. Thanks for watching. I hope you find future episodes entertaining.

I'm a huge fan of Menard's. I got the 3.0, it's cheap and especially the engine shows. That being said, I do like the idea of them even putting out cheaper engines. @TheRambles

I totally agree with this point. My question is where is the line for folks? These engines still cost nearly $200. They’re not THAT inexpensive after everything is said and done.
@jamesf791
@jamesf791 2 года назад
@@TheRambles you made excellent points. I agree that for an additional what $200, you get a much better engine, plus 3 excellent passenger cars. Not to mention track as well. Here is what I see, Menard's is doing what Wal-Mart method is, you are buying cheap and you know it. It's like buying particle board instead of solid wood. Yes solid wood is more durable and will obviously last longer, but people may not be able to afford it and will be using the poorer product at least in the short run.

I don't like how the engine crew is not properly positioned; they should be sitting farther back more centered on the side windows. My memory of the AT&ST Warbonnet paint scheme is that of the red being much lighter and "redder". So, too, was the silver - it was much brighter. I really don't think it's worth the money. The Lionel seemed to have gotten it much closer to "right".
@jodysmith8048

I also was just thinking that if Menards finally does get this locomotive to Market with no problems at all Menards moves forward with making other locomotives in the future I hope that Lionel doesn't try to buy them out to keep Menards from producing locomotives at a cheaper price thin Lionel
@wayneantoniazzi2706

Lionel buying out the Menards train product line to remove a competitor? Possibly. It's happened before in other businesses. Buying EVERYTHING Menards? No way. Menards is the "Home Depot" and "Lowes" of the Midwest, Lionel couldn't afford THAT.
@OriginalBongoliath
@OriginalBongoliath Год назад
Menards is first and foremost a hardware store. I don't see Lionel being able to buy them out. I would be more worried about Home Depot or Lowes buying Menards that is if Menards is a publicly traded company. Then Lionel could swoop in and buy up their toy train line that Home Depot or Lowes would not be interested in keeping around.

IF there's a Menard's feedback e-mail address that came with the product by all means use it, let them know what you think and why. Great review! Very thorough! I'm wondering if these Menards engines were actually supposed to be the final product (Menards must've not liked the quality maybe?) and they labeled them as 'Beta' just to get rid of them. It'll be interesting if they come out with a final release. On another note; since these are a wireless device, shouldn't they be FCC certified? I'm pretty sure Lionel's remote has an FCC ID number on the back & Menards doesn't. Menards needs to get these certified or they could possibly have to issue a recall or face fines from the FCC. EDIT: After looking around, Lionel has an FCC Statement and FCC ID on the first page of their Super Chief instruction manual.

Good video Tony! Now, on to business. It strikes me Menards is essentially putting out experimentals and letting the consumers do the experimenting. Not a good idea when there's obviously quality control issues with the packaging, the engine, and the remote. That's a good way to give yourself a bad rep when you probably don't deserve it. The right thing to do is do the experimenting and torture testing in-house. Eliminate the bugs in production, quality control, and packaging BEFORE you test the waters of the marketplace. And were it up to me, I'd add a conventional control option or go conventional control only to keep the price point down. I've believed for a while Menards was going to take the plunge into motive power eventually, but they seem to be stumbling into it instead of striding.

A couple of observations, if I may. Opening boxes with a prybar or steel ruler has the potential to damage contents within. Please don’t show this technique again! If you’ve ever looked at the prototype engine, you’ll see that Menards should’ve reversed the silver paint on the body versus the trucks! The bodies should be shiny since they were stainless steel, and trucks were painted in silver, almost semigloss in appearance, and never chromed! When you compared the engine against the Lionel product, didn’t you notice that the Menards only had one motor, and the Lionel had two? May have resulted in the difference in pulling power.

Menards needs to do rwo things. 1. Either DUMP the Lion Chief type remote control and upgrade to CONVENTIONAL only operation or provide a physical switch on the locomotive to switch from remote to conventional operation. and 2. DUMP the GARBAGE PLASTIC GEARS. Lionel got burned in the 1970s when they used plastic gears in their diesels. Those MPC engines were were unrepairable GARBAGE. Today, Lionel only uses plastic gears in their low torque diesels like their RS-3s. Those work fine.

Lionel FasTrack is ridiculously expensive as well as unrealistic I also understand it is noisy as hell and is the noisiest plastic Bass track that there is. Tubular track whether old or new is the cheapest way to go for a beginner. You look at all of the catalogs of the modern manufacturers have you look at the railroad plans they have in the catalog and you look at the total for the price of the amount of track. Just the track will cost you $1,000 Plus. I built an outside Railway with a mixture of new Chinese Lionel tubular track as well as old American made tubular track and within a year the chinese-made track turn black and crumbles away. I had to redo the whole layout. I saw one lionchief passenger train where the lights are on and you can see there is no Interiors in the car at all. So unrealistic looking. At least in the set that you have they have interior. After you have Passenger cars with interiors and passengers Silhouettes in the window just doesn't cut it anymore.
