Fun fact: that album cover is an actual watercolour by Mendelssohn. View of Florence, dated 1830. If he wasn't writing music he could have moonlighted as a visual artist too.
O, how my music teacher was wrong about Mendelssohn, considering him a second rate composer, who tailored his music to sound like Mozart or Schubert! I didn’t discover the real Mendelsohn, besides his Midsummer overture, piano and violin concertos until later in my life. Thanks to RU-vid and Brilliant Classics, I was able to discover his quartets, trios and other intimate music pieces! Yes it is romantic, yet unique and different from other romantics. I wish many famous quartets would incorporate these Mendelssohn’s gems in their repertoire more often.
Mine was exactly the same and pushed me to Beethoven before I knew anything about the meaning behind living, love and loss. Result, big funk. Then I found the Liede Ohne Worte and he relented enough to let me learn several of them.
@stonefireice6058 -- Imagine Wagner's frustration upon hearing "Fingal's Cave"....He inverted the theme to create Walkürenritt......BRAVO from Acapulco!

His Midsummer, Violin and Piano concertos were always popular to the point, of overplayed. Maybe for that reason many serious musicians shunned Mendelssohn. Too bad, because there is an abundance of his compositions worthy of performing and audiences to enjoy.
@@leeroger1471 Strange how attitudes change. When IWAL, people such as my father despised Mendelssohn and Tchaikovsky (you didn't even mention Wagner!); the snob jury was, I think, out even on Mozart. The champs were Beethoven, Bach, and Brahms.
@@mikelyle5011 I like ball the composers u named but it is a shame how some composers stood for right and some stood for wrong and some was highly misunderstood all there life and some composers was not recognized for there skills at all but it is a good thing RU-vid is here I can listen to unknown composers music anytime I choose.
These are joyous right through. I would expect nothing less brilliant from the Klimt ensemble. Mendelssohn's death at 38 was tragic. With the volume of beautiful works he left behind him that have endured down the centuries one can only give thanks for the life he had. Also, his helping to reinstate J.S. Bach's works for us was among his many triumphs. Thank you to all concerned in putting this lovely recording together.
Mendelssohn is just a genius, and his music gave a big effect to other composers. And I like his music because of 3 sources, Romantic, Endless Beauty, and Very new style that makes no one to compare about similar musics.
Wonderful post. This type of classical music {piano quartets & concerto's} is what i think of as classic classical music. Great for intensely listening, reading by or even taking a nap too. A good all-rounder.
A disappointing recording. What on earth motivated those weird pauses in the first movement of the first quartet? And the string playing in general lacks the necessary finesse. I recommend the recording by the Schubert Ensemble (which ironically was once on Brilliant) -- best thing they ever did.
Later than what? Matching to what? Mendelssohn lived only 38 yrs, and after 15 all his works are works of a mature master. Besides of Overture to Midsummer night and Symphony #3 ( Scottish), there are many masterpieces, such as Songs w/o words, Italian symphony, Piano and Violin concertos, etc. We often use a name “ Genius” without much reason, but Mendelssohn was a Genius.
