When I learned the piano in the late seventies/early 80's, Brendel's play was a big thing in classic piano. My grandfather liked his play and tried to copy the sound of it. And he wasn't that bad a piano player. He donated himself a grand piano for his pension entry and we all loved him for it!!

I hate the word relaxarion applied to great music. I'm too deeply moved by the music to feel relaxed. If you like, it inspires by being eloquent. I played the last movement of Schumann's Phntasie op. 17 to a couple of friends and when they told me afterwards that it was relaxing music, this spoiled my whole experience of playing it to them. Mendelssohn's Symphonies are very great works. These Songs have what a faourite poet called the depth of the suoperficial but some of the Songs are as great as any written in that period. What about the funeral march?

I completely agree that music should be focused on, but as long as people can appreciate the music, then hearing it is worth it. It's one thing to sit leaned in to hear and focus hard on every single bar, and another to listen to the way each note contributes to the peace of mind of one person. As long as someone appreciates classical music, that counts as appreciation.

I love this! For a long time I listened to Kyriakou's version, which is beautifully played. But for me, van de Laar's version is intensely felt, and thus more beautiful and lyrical. It has dramatic power. Later: I listened again to Kyriakou's version, and I like it very much. We're fortunate to be able to enjoy two different interpretations.

This is an excellent introduction to Mendelssohn. Frank van de Laar's rendering of this well-loved music is full of true sentiment, and pianistically perfect. Just listen to a piece like the Adagio in F op.53 no.4 (track 22), wistful, resigned and majestic all at the same time. An album to be loved and cherished. Highly recommended.

Exemple A L’italian »

O gee, another feminist with her sob story. Fanny preferred to be published that way, even though she could choose a pseudonym to be published. Aurora Dudevan ( George Sand) is one example. Although there were women composers, writers, scientists who worked under their real names. As for Ferenz Liszt, infinite womanizer, he was glad to transcribe well known and obscure compositions for his concerts, he was a king in that.

Mendelssohn should be high in the top grade of the most wonderful composers ever. I have no real formal musical education. I am just a long term listener to music who over the years has come to enjoy and appreciate his (and others) genius. What I can never understand is why harmonies are present in the right hand (playing an octave the harmonies are played by the inner fingers) as the especialy lovely melodies flow. I cant see anything is added !

@@divvy1400yam600 Many musicologist and music historians rate Mendelssohn as one of the top B list composers. His symphonies are silly when compared to the Beethoven, his choral works do not match up to the great one he studied by Bach and Handel, his piano music does not compare with Chopin or Schumann, he was not innovative with the orchestra. etc.

@@shnimmuc I'm no musical expert. I listen to a lot of classical music, have done all my life. For me the acid test is when a piece really moves me.
