Mental Health Awareness | I Have OCD
In honor of mental health awareness month, I wanted to reflect on my own journey with mental health as a whole, and especially OCD. My whole life I have struggled with anxiety and depression, but I just recently was also diagnosed with OCD. There is a lot of stigma, stereotypes, and misinformation out there regarding OCD and I wanted to share my experiences with it day to day. It is debilitating at times.
Mental health is also a huge issue in the Huntington's Disease community, another diagnosis I received five years ago, so this is very near to my heart.
I also touch on the tragic loss of former Miss USA Cheslie Kryst. She is a tragic but true example that mental health does not discriminate and even the most ambitious, beautiful, and successful people can be struggling without anyone knowing. No one knows the demons you may battle everyday. Be kind. That might be the one thing that keeps someone here today: a simple act of kindness and understanding.

I found your channel and I'm sending you love. I also struggle around Christmas time because I am not on speaking terms with my parents and have a lot of trauma that took place around that time of year. It's hard to be struggling so much at a time of year that it seems like everyone's happy and together with their families. I also had a traumatic experience with my first psychiatric medication. I'm doing better now thankfully but I can really relate to just how messed up the wrong medication can make you feel. I'm also grieving the loss of a loved one, it's been about 9-10 months since my soul cat passed in my arms after 19 years of love, and I still cry when I try to conjure up pleasant memories of her. Even so I'm blessed to say my life is good, despite all the hardship, I count my blessings and feel quite fortunate. And it's always good to remember that other people have similar experiences with holidays, meds, grief, etc. Thank you for sharing your experience, I found a lot of solace in this video.

You're so brave, Shelby, to share your OCD and depression and anxiety experiences with us all. I can really relate. I have all three conditions myself. There is severe mental illness on both sides of my family that have led to multiple suicides. In my family, mental illness is sort of like Huntington's. It's so prevalent and debilitating. And we family members worry that, if the mental illness is genetic, we will have the defective genes and will suffer the same fate as the family members who didn’t survive their mental illness. With Huntington's, there's a genetic test that can show if you have the defective gene. In mental illness, there's not yet genetic testing that can show if you've inherited a defective gene that makes you 50% at risk for carrying the gene. I know how it is to have OCD. I do things in numbers too.😂 My number is eight. I do a lot of things in eights. And i have intrusive thoughts that have limited my life in certain ways. But also, my knowing that I have OCD has given me the ability to keep some of my OCD behavior at bay. You're an awesome person. Thanks so much for making yourself vulnerabe and sharing those vulnerabilities with your RU-vid audience. You are strong for doing so. Keep on, keep on!

Hi!!! Your story is so inspiring and it gives me hope. My mom was officially diagnosed with HD a year ago, and it's been quite a journey for both. My mom has 11 siblings and and 6 are either officially diagnosed or showing symptoms. My grandfather and uncle have passed from HD. It breaks my heart everyday to see my loved ones struggling and suffering, and to know that that can be my fate. The way I cope is by serving and helping my loved ones. I ask God everyday to help me carry my cross with compassion. Kindness, strength, patience, and courage, because it's not a walk in the park. I'm 34 and haven't gotten tested, and I'm not sure I will. I have decided not to have children because I do have a 50% chance of having HD. God bless you, and may God give you the strength to continue with your mission.

I’m currently talking to a person whom has family history of Huntington. While I was looking into the background of Huntington your video from discussing your diagnosis came up. Your videos collectively are inspiring. I encourage you to keep at it. Even your Halloween costume with the eyeliner was good. Being from Frankenmuth (a fellow Michigander) you’re not alone in this world. Keep that bubbly personality going forward and strong. God Bless you as you will be included in my daily prayer today.

i myself have a 50% chance of having HD. After a meeting with the GC I decided that now isn't the time to be tested, but I still think about it often. Thank you for being a great advocate! Also, It's a relief to know I'm not the only one who hair picks. i absolutely ruined my hair doing that.

I’m so sorry 😞 I hate that you’re going through this as well! I don’t find many others who have hair issues with OCD, but it sucks. I totally get why you’ve chosen not to know yet with HD. Sending you love and prayers 🙏💜

Hi, you're not alone. I go through the same things everyday. I have had OCD my whole life but only got diagnosed not too long ago. We may seem weird to people but it's not our fault. I watched the whole video btw and totally sympathize with you.

I understand what you're going through with being positive for an inherited genetic disorder. I just wanted to share with you a bit of my story and it might not be similar exactly per se but I can relate. My aunt is battling a rare breast cancer called triple negative breast cancer and it's hereditary and I lost a mother to pancreatic and then my cousin reached out saying that they're undergoing genetic testing that family members should get tested and my aunt came back positive for this rare genetic disorder that increase your risks substantially for cancer and I've been stressing and going through that, really scary you are very brave
