Mental Health Clinicians as Suicide Loss Survivors (Part 2 of 2)
United Survivors (United Suicide Survivors International) hosts a webinar on Mental Health Clinicians as Suicide Loss Survivors: Personal & Professional Reverberations. Part two of a two-part series, this webinar features two clinicians providing an overview of the personal and professional impacts of suicide loss for mental health clinicians followed by their personal stories. Paula Marchese, LCSW discusses the loss of her client to suicide, and Dr. Nina Gutin lost her brother while in training to become a Psychologist. They will discuss the impact of their respective losses, as well as the factors that ultimately enabled them to integrate and “make use” of these experiences in both personal and professional domains. They also share information about the Coalition of Clinician-Survivors (www.clinicians...) which provides support and resources to clinicians after personal and professional suicide losses.
Learning Objectives
Participants will understand:
1) the ways in which the suicide loss of both patients and loved ones are likely to impact clinicians in their clinical work and professional identities.
2) the way in which the professional, legal and ethical issues which ensue after the loss of a patient/client to suicide can complicate the clinician’s bereavement process.
3) the factors which potentially facilitate healing and growth for Clinician-Survivors, and how to make these more available in clinical settings
About the panelists
Paula Marchese, LCSW (she/her) is a psychotherapist with over 35 years of clinical and supervisory experience and is in private practice in NY and NJ. After losing a long term patient to suicide over 15 years ago, she became an active member of The Coalition of Clinician Survivors and helps coordinate support services for mental health professionals who have lost patients to suicide or murder-suicide. For close to five years, Paula has been facilitating virtual, nationwide support groups for clinicians who have experienced the suicide death of a patient(s). She leads both ongoing as well as intensive short term groups and has had the privilege of working with over 135 clinician survivors through groups, consultations, supervision and/or in ongoing psychotherapy. She offers trainings to clinical staff, program administrators, and psychiatry residents aimed at identifying blind spots in many suicide prevention trainings and provides recommendations to help foster clinician resilience, mitigate the severity of moral injury following a patient suicide and improve care for both patients and clinicians at risk. Paula has presented papers at conferences on patient suicide loss and developed a healing through storytelling workshop entitled, “Drowning in Guilt - A Lifeguard Analogy.”
