I worked as a mental health technician for about a year and a half. Like any job, there were positives and negatives. In this video, I list out the main things that I enjoyed about my job and the main drawbacks. Overall, I learned so much during my time as a tech but it is definitely not a job for everybody. I hope this video helps you decide if the job would be a good fit for you.

@@brianzapata6237 Hi, there isn't a specific course to take honestly. I did receive an associates degree majoring in Human Services. However, a degree nor course is needed to do what I do. I received training from my actual job as to how they would prefer their techs to be with the patients and that was all. I hope this helps?!

Just SAY it my dood. 😂 Nurses can be some really shitttttayy people. They see the pt for LITTERALLY like 2-5 minutes during med pass (at most twice a shift for them) and basically that is IT. They think they know everything about the pt and you know less than nothing. Your SAFETY depends on you knowing your pts... Theirs doesn't. I work at a Maximum Security State Forensic Unit. We have the worst of the worst you basically have to be actively violent to get sent there. Hands on ALL the time. Having said this, it's a fact that the pts are the EASIEST part of the job. Nurses make it hard and their FAVORITE flavor is dumping on people. Docs? I barely saw them and they were always cool. Still I fkn LOVE my job, lots of laughs, fights and excitement. A lot of the pts are cool. Stories for a lifetime. I agree with everything you said, thank you for putting this out there for people!

I worked as a student behavioral associate and it sounds pretty similar. Essentially, I worked as a behavioral technician which is similar to a mental health technician. I worked for a year on an autism and developmental disorder unit. I'm debating going back to school and working as a night shift mental health technician but I'm still so unsure because my previous experience was difficult for me. They taught me crisis management but one of my night shifts I was the only one on the floor and I was choked out. Not saying that everyone will be...but it does suck if there are not enough staff. I worked while going to school during Covid. Thank you for making this video.

I just finished my B.S. in Psychology. I plan on starting graduate school next year to become a LPC. I started looking into entry level mental health jobs to get some real world experience before obtaining my masters and my license. And there’s a state hospital hiring for mental health clinicians is what they have it listed as but it’s the same as a technician. I’m really tempted to get into it, but I’m not sure if it’s for me or not. Sounds to much like working in a prison which I’m not a fan of.

I am very nervous to start. I want to help people. I come from a computer programming background, but I want to try something new. I am very strong and literate and I think I am a good talker and calming person. Is the pay okay? The place where I am applying says the trainee pay is $4,000 per month which seems high. But they cannot get people to work there. There is also lots and lots of overtime which I need (I am in serious debt). Bottom line, though, is at this point in my life, I really, really want to help people in crisis.

@@andrewcipriano Thank you for responding. What state were you in? I am in Illinois which seems on the more generous side. Plus, like I mentioned, the facility is severely short staffed and the quit rate is high. Did you get overtime? The reviews of the facility I am applying to had the same pros and cons: Pro: unlimited overtime Con: unlimited (mandatory) overtime Also, could you think of a reason they would not hire me? I come from a computer background and my resume was filled with that kind of thing. But I also said I want a new career and want to help people. However, the state has not responded in going on 5 weeks. They said it takes 2-6 weeks to respond, so be patient. And I would think that if it were a "no" they would have told me right away. I need this job as much as I want this job.

@@andrewcipriano This video aided in my decision (probably obviously) in pursuit of a psych tech position that I ultimately cancelled. I'm as strong-willed as they come, but the reality of that position isn't just mentally taxing. As a female, I already naturally have the predisposition of lessened physicality, so the position itself can be endangering. I've compiled other reviews of this position and seen a pattern of disadvantages. It seems as though it would be more suitable for cops than young civilians starting their career. Of course days aren't all bad, but preparation is to assume that days might be. I'm not discrediting your insight and experience in this video, more so, I am actually applauding you for your resilience. Which leads me to why I asked what happened after. If myself and others, could work straight to those positions instead, as a stepping stone.

Bidet. Would it help to attach bidet attachments to each toilet? They are $40 on Amazon. It's been a life changer for me. I go through very little toilet paper. My colon is always clean. There is very little poop on the toilet paper if any. I never smell. I feel a lot healthier and cleaner throughout the day. I think lots of people have mental health problems because of their diets. And their diets cause really messy bowel movements.
