As we learn to integrate mental hygiene into our day-to-day lives, it is important to keep a balanced view of its role in our lives. We do not want to create new thinking traps like “I am having mental health challenges, it’s my fault, I have not done enough mental hygiene”. These types of thoughts are both unhelpful and untrue. Other hygienic practices can be a good guide to help us have a balanced view.
For example, someone can have excellent dental hygiene, brushing their teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and yet still develop cavities that requires a dentist to fix. Someone who engages in regular physical activity may still have cardio-vascular health issues and require a consultation with a cardiologist. That being said, good dental hygiene and regular physical activity helps our overall chances of experiencing good dental and physical health. The same is true for mental hygiene.

Mental Hygiene is a form of preventative maintenance, and the concept of doing small things daily that support our mental health. We know that we should shower, brush our teeth, and get a good night’s sleep daily to stay on top of our physical and dental hygiene, but there’s currently no guidance around daily maintenance of our brains. By committing to spending as little as 10 minutes per day on mental hygiene practices, research shows that they can have a significant impact on improving your overall wellness.
