Its the 8th December 2018 and once again we have underestimated the short days! We decided to have a look at three lines today which were to include, the Bishops Waltham Branch, The Meon Valley Line and the Basingstoke and Alton Light Valley.
Welcome to Episode 4 of #EveryDisusedStation You can visit the website for progress and information about our adventure. www.paulwhitewick.co.uk
Paul and Rebecca have decided to embark upon and rather silly challenge which will hopefully see them visit all 6800 (approx. figure) disused stations in the UK. As always the criteria being that we get as close as possible without a) Trespassing and b) endangering ourselves or others. Stations do include those that are in use as heritage lines. (of course they are no longer disused but in the sense of a mainline passenger station, they are certainly on our list).

Hey guys, I'm from Winchester. I moved to London over 8yrs ago, and then to Vietnam almost 4yrs ago. I just recently have been yearning a little to hear and see some of the simple small things in the countryside there, the bird sounds and the lovely weather and the walks. Thanks so much for what you do! i stumbled across this channel just at the right time :) Oh, and it's so great to see such lovely people from near my home town!

Great channel guys, this is my area. If you walk or cycle from wickham it's a 10 mile route on the old track up to the old bridge which has been demolished. This then leads to the tunnel where Churchills train hid them during WW2

The bridge you guys visited at 18:00 was actually used in one of the Cadburys Milk Tray adverts, the infamous Milk Tray man jumping onto the roof of a moving train from the road above. There was a video snip on RU-vid somewhere. Sure it'll turn up with a bit of digging 🙂

Found your channel by seeing you on Geoff on Old London Lines. Pre-C19, Droxford station would open up once a year for you to walk around, the owner recently sold it for £1.5M (if I recall), he was a lawyer and a railway enthusiast. His plans were to lay track and purchase the remaining northern section of the platforms but HCC said no as they wanted a bit of it for walkers. I'm not sure who the new owners are and if they'll do any future open days. HCC have filled in Wickham station, however, the platform edges are aligned, roughly to the edge of the bridge. If you take a little garden trowel with you, if you scrape off an inch or so of dirt, you'll see the remains of the platform edge, mostly the north bound side. HCC were given funding to put a new trail down, cut the trees back and make everything look nice, which they did some 8 years or so ago. Since then, it has been left to over grow... Again! Which hides a lot of its gems, including (at West Meon) the waiting room tiles, gents toilets drains, (up and down the line that old signal posts), Wickham and West Meon water towers, which was linked to the near by river Meon to save on using mains water. Knowle halt will not be reopening as part of the Welbourne Estate, instead a new station called Welbourne will be built further south. This is due to limited space at the current Knowle location to create a mainline station. I was one of the people who tried to get the line reopened back in 2013 as a heritage railway, hence knowing a lot about the line and what remains, which is still a lot of things to find along the route.

Great video , The site of Bishops waltham station is located where the roundabout is and along the road opposite side to where those gates are . The platforms at Wickham are right next to the car park , they've been filled for over 30 yrs , they were filled in when I made my First trip which was in the late 1980's. Droxford , you can access the trackbed by going under the bridge opposite the Hurdles pub then take the little track on the left , you access via the old goods yard , better to leave your car at the Hurdles as you can't park in that little road , It's well worth having a look at that side of the station . Until recently , the owners used t open the gardens once a year for charity which I sadly missed as by the time I'd found out , they'd held the final One .

I've only recently discovered you but am addict already. I know this old line well, having walked or cycled it over the years. One bit you missed out was the site of the viaduct at West Mean, just north of the station. It was a steel structure, almost a mini version of Meldon on Dartmoor, so only the concrete plinths are left.

Hi guys, just seen this video and loved it so my comment is a bit 3 years 'after the fact' but as an addition to the comments already here, some more info... The Knowle Halt bit you showed was actually the Knowle Asylum Hospital siding. Knowle Halt platform was actually sited about approx 100 meters ahead of where you were parked ( through the gate and up on the left hand side ) next to the track. You can't see it from where you were - the platform supports are still there but covered in foliage. It would also mean a walk along the track to see it properly but if you're quick, you can get a view from the train window. The space between the platforms at Wickham has been filled in. You can still see the platform edging stones in the mud and on the right side, you can still see the tiles from the waiting shelter floor amongst all the undergrowth. Also, you were really close to the southern portal of Privett tunnel. If you'd followed the actual road up, there's a dirt track that leads off which goes down to the cutting and onto the portal. Still very much there and ( was) owned by a builder before the Nike BMX course was built in there. Love your videos. Keep up the good work.

I grew up in the Meon Valley and spent a long time walking along and round the MVR and the Bishop's Waltham branch (and spent a summer weekend trying to trace what I could of the Basingstoke & Alton Light Railway!) so I very much enjoyed this video - well made, well presented and it was good to see some old 'haunts' again - haven't been down that way for six years. I actually did a project on West Meon Station as part of an industrial archaeology course, which involved surveying and photographing the entire site and clearing away, measuring, photographing and drawing the remaining features (mostly the cattle pen remains and the tiled waiting room floor). You said that you like it when they leave things 'just as they were' - I can say that eight years ago it was much more jungle-like there - that platform which is now nicely grassed over with tables on had massive trees all the way along it and very dense undergrowth. I knew from my cooperation with the council over the project that they were planning to do some clearance work but I didn't know it would be so extensive - with all the resurfacing work they've since done on the ex-trackbed as well you could almost believe they're getting ready to re-lay the rails! Sadly not...
@pwhitewick
@pwhitewick 5 лет назад
Thanks Jack. We love stations like this. Yup clearing back is better in this case, if that makes sense. Have you seen our video on the Basinstoke / Alton line?
@jozg44
@jozg44 5 лет назад
@@pwhitewick I have now! You had better success than I did in finding remains here and there. I've watched your videos on the DN&SR, the Fullerton Junction line and the M&SWJR too - I've trekked around/along those in the past as well and very much enjoyed watching your journeys. After I found the original DN&SR survey maps in the county record office I even traced what I could of the never-built Winchester-Southampton section, as well as the few remains of the work started at the Southampton end, trying to imagine what it would have been like if the line had actually been built through. There's a whole new strand - not Disused Stations, but Stations That Never Existed!
@simontay4851
@simontay4851 5 лет назад
The track should be relayed. Would it be well used if it was rebuilt and are there any obstructions along the route?
@jozg44
@jozg44 5 лет назад
@@simontay4851 As much as I'd like to see it in a fantasy sense, there really isn't much of a case for reopening the MVR - there was never really much of a case for it being built in the first place! The villages it connects still aren't very big and there isn't much in the way of commuter traffic from them to either of the towns that were at either end. The A32 road which parallels the route of the railway is not in any way busy. As for obstructions, south of West Meon the formation is essentially intact because it's been maintained as a bridleway. Immediately north of West Meon there's a gap where a large viaduct crossed over the River Meon. North of West Meon tunnel there's a cutting that has been backfilled, as has the one between Privett tunnel and Privett station. There are several missing bridges between Privett and Tisted, and about 1.5 miles of trackbed south of Tisted, which used to be embankment, has been completely levelled and returned to farmland. North of Tisted station there are houses on the formation. There's another missing bridge at Farringdon, plus an industrial estate around and along the former line and station site. The really insurmountable obstacle is that where the MVR joined what is now the Watercress Line, just southwest of Alton, the entire trackbed and formation has been destroyed by the building of a large roundabout between the A32 and the A31 plus a big section of the A31 Alton bypass itself. That would require major re-engineering, or an entirely new railway formation, if you were to try and reinstate that connection. The real loss was not the MBR itself, but the older line that the MVR plugged into at Fareham, which was the line into Gosport. The Gosport peninsula is now badly overcrowded and subject to virtually continuous traffic jams along the A32 which is the only vaguely high-capacity road in and out. The old Fareham-Gosport railbed has been converted to a busway after a proposal to reinstate it as a light rail project collapsed. In practical terms, I think the only viable way of bringing trains back to part of the MVR would be to build that light rail project from Gosport, up to Fareham, through a reinstated Knowle Halt (the ex-psychiatric hospital is now a housing development with 1500+ people in it and there is a serious lack of public transport there) and up to Wickham, which is something of a dormitory village for Gosport/Fareham/Portsmouth.

at 18:30 was the old goods yard at farringdon on the industrial estate. it has an accessible right of way.to the left of the motorcycle dealership on the main road. the actual farringdon halt is almost out of the village on the A32 Farnham bound.its all been cleared but you may spot the odd stray railway sleeper. this also has a public right of way through it on a small industrial complex.

The Bishop Waltham branch line ended at Bishop's Walthem..we used to walk the whole line from Wickham to West Meon, where there was a huge wooden bridge over the village. I at was built for two tracks, but never had more than one was laid. Pity about the hurdles gastro pub, it overreached itself. In the mid 60’s, I lived in Sages Lane, Privett, adjacent to the north end of the tunnel. Then, the ‘Connellys’ lived in the station, where most of it was still intact. As kids we played between the station and the north end of the tunnel. The tunnel was used at some point commercially to grow mushrooms in. Eventually the deep cutting, sadly became a landfill, [commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MVRPrivettTunnel.JPG#/media/File:MVRPrivettTunnel.JPG ] and a massive wildlife habitat was lost. The ‘Angel’ pub on the main road now, bears no resemblance to the pub that use to be there....It was called ‘The Pig and Whistle’ ....Happy Days... [Courtesy of Wikipedia] After the construction of Privett station, the contractors came to their biggest engineering work - the Privett Tunnel. At 1,058 yards (967 m) in length,[16] the tunnel was curved, so the centre of the tunnel was in total darkness. Steam shovels and horses were used to remove the spoil (the latter were lowered into the works down shafts). The ground the tunnel was being driven through was found to be solid enough but nevertheless the tunnel was lined, partially in brick, partially in concrete render.[citation needed][17] A collapse in the tunnel trapped two navvies, James Owen and George Brown, the latter dying of suffocation.[18] Owen managed to dig himself free with his pocket knife and was rescued after being trapped for over 53 hours.[19] A second man, Richard Allen was killed after being run over by a wagon in the tunnel. These deaths caused some men to leave the works.[20] Enough men left to make the contractors bring in two steam shovels and a traction engine, G. Harris and Son's Burrell 'Endurance', to speed up progress.[citation needed] The tunnel was built by two teams working from opposite ends, and when the two met they were less than an inch from their planned course.[21])

Good to see this one as have run along here quite a lot. At Tisted there is a carriage and a bit of track in the back garden which you can see from a path and bridge behind it. Don't think any evidence of Farringdon station still exists but it is on the site of a small industrial park right by the main road. On the opposite side there is a path by the side of what presume was the underside of a bridge over the main road and you can walk/run on the trackbed to where you were at Tisted. Believe it is a "permissive" path - next best thing to an official ROW.

Maybe the platform curve was to accommodate engines with oversize external cylinders. I have a vague memory of hearing that some heritage trains could not run on mainline as they would scrape along the modern platforms. Another of my few brain cells says GWR. I could be completely wrong but maybe not.

The OS County Series 1:2500 map (2nd revision, 1909 and 3rd revision, 1939) appears to show the track layouts at Wickham station in quite a lot of detail. West Meon Station had a large building and it was wonderful till it got demolished after the Beeching cuts ... My friend Ray wanted to buy it and make it into his home but was refused permission .. I lived in the village for 20+ years and wanted to walk the line but had to leave before I could do so. There was also a huge bridge that had existed across the road called the High Street, just along from the The Thomas Lord pub.. massive piece of engineering

The remnants of the pre-cast concrete platforms supports of Knowle Asylum Halt (Tuesdays only) used to be visible from passing trains on the Fareham-Botley route, the formation being triple here. They might still be visible now. At Botley, the last few hundred yards of the branch is in situ as a headshunt for the rail-connected aggregate depot. The bay platform is still there too, albeit fenced off. Well done looking for Durley! A single rail-built post being more evidence than I would have expected to find. No doubt it was for an LSWR 'trespassers will be prosecuted' sign in cast iron. Privett tunnel south entrance is easy to find and get to if you know where to approach it from. You forgot to mention the temporary WW2 platform at Mislingford (and the permanent goods sidings). Sounds like another trip might be necessary...

Hallo Rebecca and Paul, I am particulary drawn to your Meon Valley video because as a young engineer in 1976/77 I drove every day along the A32 from the Reading area to Gosport to work. At that time the remnants of the old railway line, buildings etc were to be seen on both sides of the road. I remember that a bridge crossing the A32 was demolished over a weekend so as not to effect weekly traffic. Other bridges over the side roads were also demolished one by one at that time. It seems most of the line, south of Alton anyway was built on an embankment. In contrast to the area of Germany I now live in, there is no feeling of private property tresspass that engulfs UK . One can wander almost wherever you wish - it is part of the culture and the disused railway line here ( vulkan Radweg) is now paved for bicycles. Perhaps this old video may interest you ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MYExChDRzgE.html

@ParkinsonsWalks
@ParkinsonsWalks 5 лет назад
You will have to get the children to show you how to use it. I know I would, but my Parkinson’s would prevent me from flying one anyway. You probably know me better from my channel ‘Parkinson’s Walks’. I have been thinking about you recently because in all seriousness the Dowdeswell Viaduct site is crying out for a drone survey. I did the best I could when I was there but the site is in a field with a virtually impenetrateable hedge. I don’t think the owners welcome visitors. From the air you should be able to get an accurate alignment from the embankments and a definitive location between the two. Probably a very good chance you would see ‘crop marks’ indicating foundations which would be awesome. There are very few dwellings to worry about, and virtually no pedestrian traffic, on the other hand if the drone went down in the field, or the woods, recovery might be a challenge. But that wouldn’t happen would it!! Probably not going to happen, but at least there are now two of us lying awake thinking ‘what if’
@pwhitewick
@pwhitewick 5 лет назад
@@ParkinsonsWalks today the drone was out just north of Swindon.. it went around 300 yards before I got a tad nervous! Honestly though, flying over someones field that are not happy with visitors would likely be a no for me. Always in sight for me. That said I know one or two others that are a lot braver than myself if you'd like for me to pass on their details.

I'm not sure which old maps you two use but this link maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=50.8839&lon=-1.2105&layers=193&b=1 might be of use. Clicking on the various overlays on the left, gives access to different eras etc - a great resource but...... can cost you A LOT of time.😬 A quick look didn't find too much on Wickham but some good detail on Knowle Halt. Hope it's of some use but I have a feeling you may well be using this site already. My best tip would be to use various different overlays for each location. Cheers for now, Dougie.

@@pwhitewick So I'm not the only one who leaves RU-vid comments at stupid o'clock. I guess we're lucky with the amount of info that is USUALLY available on these old maps. I've come to, sort of, EXPECT all the gen to be there and get quite miffed when the NLS site lets me dow. It doesn't happen often though. Scotland, in particlar, is covetred by so many different eras, it's possible to track a lot of the changes around the stations, pretty much as they happened. I love their archive but I lose SO much time because, by design of course, there's never just the one station on a line. Keep 'em coming, Dougie.

wickham station goods yard was to the west of the station behind the old fire station with the station approach road alongside the demolished station buildings if i remember it only had a couple of sidings reached by a long spur from the main line ,if you had looked hard enogh you could find the platform edge slabs still in situe among the weeds,the west meon tunnel was used to grow mushrooms ,and droxford station used to have a picture of Churchill in the booking hall with a plaque explaining that is was where his secret war room was, i travelled on the line shortly before closure ,1955,and on a special train on 4th march 1959 and have some old postcards of the line and photos (my grandparents and great grandparents lived in Wickham) and last visited the site of station in 2014
