In this episode I'm going to show you how I replaced my Exhaust and welded in a new catalytic converter.
Short background information about what happened. As I was driving on the freeway there was a bang and a cloud of black smoke came from behind. I just made it to the next rest stop and the engine stopped working. I called the towing service to have the car brought home. After a long search for the cause, I found a hole behind the muffler, as the air that came out has blown away all the leaves on the ground. I filled the hole and since then no more air has come out. Not even out of the pipe. I noticed that the entire inside of the exhaust had come loose and clogged it. As the exhaust gases couldn't get out, the engine stopped. Outside the camera, I took off the exhaust and shook it and it sounded like a rattle.
About the process. Since an original or matching catalytic converter was too expensive, I ordered another 190E converter and thus saved approx. 1800 €. I cut out the old one out and welded the new one to the old pipes. Before I did that, I sealed the parts with zinc to protect them from rust and then painted them with heat resistant paint.
