it doesnt stop glowing just cause the light goes off, i usually wait double the time the light's on before starting my w123 240D, it always works in the colder temps. but under -20c you might consider waiting abit longer.
@@thiemokucharczyk When I say modern, I mean eletronic glow plug systems (a computer says how long the glow plugs should be on), which for many manufacturers is from the 80's onwards. By the way, Mercedes-Benz used no such thing in the 70's, they used manualy operated glow plug system, where you would hold the starter knob (not the key) in the glow position until you saw one of the plugs glowing on the dash behind the ''salt shaker'' cover and then you would pull the starter knob even further to engage the starter motor. What is the ''salt shaker''? For instance in 4 cylinder MB diesels, you would have 4 plugs in the engine and the fifth plug in/on the dashbord under the speedometer, behind a cover that looked like the top of a salt shaker. You would see it glow.
@@philipcooper8297 That was one thorough explanation. 😎✌🏻 of course I know the /8 Diesels, we used to have one too :-) I was referring to the w123 which was built from the later 70s, it already had the "modern" glow indicator in the dashboard. And the w123 glowed up to 1 min after the light went off, timed by an electronic relay. So what I meant is that no real modern electronics was required for that 😁
Yea, i know that feel bro :P - with only 2 out of 4 glow plugs on my W210 E220D i had rough time to start it at -15 too in Bulgaria this winter :D. Made 500 euro repairs (cause the glow plugs got cut off in the engine) so now i dont have problems :).
i like those diesel owners who doesnt have any ideas how is there car is working. The goddamn glow indicator light is not showing that how long is the car heats . it heats mutch longer than the light goes off....

@@druszan17 Yep, I live in Finland. The usual winter temperature is -20 celsius avg. The om602 is in 312D Mercedes with Garret stock factory turbo. Its the cheapest car what i have ever had, like Ford Mondeo MK2 428k kilometres and in 4 years it has gone trough Clutch replacement, Headgasket and head repair, lot of bushings and suspension parts. That's lot of money for an old car but the Mercedes in 5 years has gone trough Heater fan, Battery and oil changes and fuel, air, oil filter changes and runs good! Now need to change the timing chain what is expensive job but the engine has been tough so I think its worth it. It doesn't smoke or anything and idles and runs good! Not sure about the chain but it makes rattling noise so i think it should be replaced
u not must the key turn off and on many times, iff hating control lamp turn off then heating still work, maybe 40second, good tip its listen "tyk" on electrical system, or turn on inside light and observe then light work more, then heating turn off and must run engine now.
hyvinhän tuo käyntiin läks. kannattaa muuten kylmällä mersusta polkee lämä pohjaan kun hankaa niin mersun mukaan lähtee paremmi käyntiin :) itellä w124, 200D, -91, 1 hehku pimeenä, ei paljoo paremmin käynnisty kylmällä. yhellä hekutuksella tosin lähtee aina :)
Toimiva ja kunnossa oleva auto lähtee aina käyntiin. -30 pakkaset ei oo tuottanu ongelmaa meiän 1.6bensakoneiselle nissanille ongelmaa, eikä myöskään 307 1.6td pösölle...
Iha hyvinhä tuo tuntu lähtevän vaikka ei kaikki hehkut toiminukkaa :D Ainakii ku vertas ukon sprintterii josta oli kans sillee että vaa 2 hehkua toimi nii sai 10 asteen pakkasilla sahata suurinpiirtei kymmenemnuuttia käyntii jos ei ollu roikassa :D
don't cycle the plugs Mercedes Diesel only glows once. You turn the key and it'll glow for 45 seconds no matter what the pre glow light tells you. After that or if you turn the key back to 0. I think your car needs a service! I have a (2001) E320cdi with (191,000 miles) 307,384 Km on the clock. I heat it once and it starts 1st time every time no matter the outside temperature. But mine has a full MB service history. Oil changes 4 times a year and I let the engine idle for at least 30 seconds before shutting down.
Grzesiez My car, my choice. If you do short trips, the oil isn't getting hot enough and suffers from condensation build up (the mayonaise coloured stuff on the rocker cap). This has the effect of blocking oil ways. Clean oil helps prevent this.
+Andi Stephen Nothing is better for all the engines than doing frequent oil changes. This really tells if someone care about his car. Also let the car idling a bit before shutting down prevents damage to the turbo.
raplace the fuel pump whith a manuel fuel pump, it works better in the winter than rotate the bolt of fuel regulator and you will get 100+hp an 200+nm at 6000rpm this engine can make you fun!
All that's wrong here is that you need a higher cold cranking amps battery and add a double ground with a wire and two alligator clips that goes to your ground at battery to your frame or some mount bolt
Dumb comment, you can clearly hear there's nothing wrong with the crank speed. These pre-chamber engines need glow plugs to start from cold, especially at -15.

im that type of human that i treat my car like my dog i never let him go! when i gonna buy a new one that old one ill put in garage. ive got W124 benz and i got 358k km but i think there is a lot more cuz in czech republic that motherfuckers cheating with this. My friend has the same one but bigger ccm and he let verify it and it had 1 2XX XXX km :) it depends on you how far r u going im hitting about 30-40k km per year cuz im driving just for fun :D
