A world apart from the design philosophies of Mercedes today: crass, blingy, mass market cars with a ludicrously large model line up to cover every market segment. No better quality than any other manufacturer, simply trading on that badge and their past reputation. What happened to their 'traditional values' mentioned in this video?!
As far as the line-up is concerned, Audi, BMW & Volvo all had to diversify. If MB had kept making a few sedans of various sizes forever, they'd have gone bust long ago.
I have a 1995 c200 , other than the transmission gave up the ghost due to previous owner lack of care , so far the only complain i have is the left door cable is rattling like mad and drives me crazy and small thin plastic parts turns brittle and need extra care when knocking them around. The car is smooth , fuel efficient , the aircon is freezing cold and the handling is superb. I love this car and cant stop being proud for owning it.
@@akishot6735 Early w202's are fine. Things went south when they switched to water based paint for environmental reasons. i have a 1990 300E and a 1993 C200D. excellent cars.
@TiltVHS that's because the water comes down the window rubber and into the door, where it can't escape. I had a 1995 c-class diesel for over 5 years. It was a great car, now I have a w123 & w124.
My '94 C250D is in very good condition. It has 256kkm on the clock. 23 years in our family. Now I’m doing what’s necessary to keep it as good as possible.
I can truly confirm that, my dad had w201, w202, and w203. I've got the 1995 w202 manual c200, and it is indestructible, low Maintainance car, the early 2000's w203s are a headache.
Some of the draft sketches actually looked quite interesting, too bad the final car looked so boring. Then I doubt that Mercedes is still doing those shock/vibration tests these days anymore as a modern Mercedes car would break into pieces after 20 minutes.
I have a 1994 w202 c 220 which I have used for 10 years and there is no single rust anywhere in spite of the bad roads we drive on. even if this one dies no matter how wealthy I am I will own a 202 for life though I am considering w123, 124, 126, 204 and 90s s class. w202 for life. love from Nigeria
Hello, you don’t have rust because your version has an oil-based paint which doesn’t rust, while newer models (from 1995) had water-based paint for environmental reasons 😅 and this particular one was extremely rusty. I also have the 1994 version, although mine is 2.5 diesel
The following C Class was Mercedes recovery tactic. They did millions of miles of testing. They ensured it was well designed to last and probably over engineered it. My 2010 BlueEfficiency heralded their pinnacle when the torque delivered performance in this big saloon. Sadly the model shown rusted away and ruined Mercedes reputation. I don't believe Mercedes bettered the model I have. Dodgy face lifts ruined it. Then the current bubble car moved production away from Germany resulting in a plethora of faults and poor build quality. I was relieved to have my car back with its reassuring clunk of the doors after being loaned a new C Class that felt tinny and poorly finished inside. Volume reseller move by Mercedes to take on BMW dominance. Sadly their cars are now inadequate in spite of raves by motoring journalists. Such a shame.
@dropout0110 yeh I definitely think they made an effort to rebuild the quality back in. Mines done over 100k with no problems interior feels solid and well made still looks and drives like the day I got it. The problem is it will take a long time rebuild their reputation. I think the 2010-2018 Gen will age well.
@@bobbyrayofthefamilysmith24 lol, 100k with no problems, like that's something to be proud... Those w202 and 190 were doing well over 200k before you have to start looking at replacing components, not talking about the engine which was a TANK
@@seigma5340 I'm simply stating I've not had any problem at 100k what's your problem? I know there's many 2010 onwards E class taxis with 250k+ miles without Any major problems. I also have a 190E 2.0 owned since 2012 so I have a comparison with the new and the old. The 2010 onwards compare well they are good quality cars.
@@seigma5340 The 202 wasn't great either rust problem alongside crappy electronics plagued that Generation of Mercs. The rust and electrical seem sorted in the late 2000s
Probably the computer was stuffed with all kinds of I/O-cards to read out all the additional sensors. In the early 90th laptops were still rather bulky, with very low calculating power and hard-drive capacity. (upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/90/Hard_drive_capacity_over_time.svg). USB was invented in 1996 so there was no simple way to connect periphery to notebooks. The RS232 and parallel ports were far too slow as an input for multiple sensors.

I guess this was the last nice MB before the w210 decline. Even tho, we can't ignore all the electronic shit that they put into this car compared to the previous 190, including those bad biodegradable wiring harness. It's just unfortunate that a car like this didn't received all the aftermarket attention that its predecessor (190) and bmw counterpart (E36) got.. Anyway, at 8:25 it talks about an autolocking electronic controlled differential, but as far as I know all the w202 that don't have ASR, have its predecessor technology (ETS), that's basically an open diff with brake control like the ASR
@@thecrazeecow1682 You have no idea what you are talking about. Those are projector type headlights. The W202 NEVER came with projector headlights. Plastic covers or not, these headlights are NOT what they have used for the production model. These headlights are 100% Hella projector headlights exactly like the 90's bmw headlights and are intentionally placed in these pre-production test vehicles. Production W202 has always been with GLASS headlights with beam pattern inprinted on the inside of the glass with clear reflectors around the bulb. There is no "plastic covers" and there are no projector headlights behind these imagined "plastic covers". That would be all. Edit: Just to make things clear, I'm not saying its a BMW, not at all, you can clearly see the single wiper of the W202 and other design cues. It's not a BMW, only the headlights are FROM a BMW and are there intentionally for these test vehicles.
@@thecrazeecow1682 You deleted your first commend, and edited your second one, removing the part that you claim these are the same oem headlights of the W202, just with removed plastic cover. Which is what is wrong. And you are commenting all over this video to different people about the same thing. So thats what I was clarifying, and what you clearly are not aware of. Those are actual BMW OEM Hella made headlights with parts N. 63121391321H used on these test cars and it was all intentional and part of consideration for projector headlights.
Can we just acknowledge that when they did public road testing they decided to obfuscate their competitor to the 5 series by making it BMW head and tail lights.
I love the back design. Still fits into the W124 and W140 design language while giving a hint towards the triangular taillights of future models in the 2000s. I like to think about them as a reminiscence of the old tailfin Benz.
I swear if i could i would definitely merge honda civic 90s era w202 90s era 90s era nissan silvia all in one concept not future but still 90s original but different and beautiful styles and body lines shapes and damn wish i was rich then i would definitely do my own custom unique designs.
