Mercedes E500 Coilover Conversion Front Part 1

In this video, I'll show you how I converted my dad's Mercedes E500 from its Airmatic suspension to coilover setup using BC Coilovers for the FRONT. The air suspension on these Mercedes are known to eventually go out causing the suspension to sag or even slam on the ground costing thousands of dollars in repair costs. I hope you guys enjoy and learn something!
Warning: Doing this conversion is NOT a walk in the park, but it is definitely do-able. If you want to get down and dirty then go right ahead and more power to you!! Just be patient and take your time.

hey I just wanted to let you know how much this video helped me converting my airmatic to coilovers that stupid ball join just wouldnt budge until I tried your method of removing the torx45 with the 13 hex nut. I mean even then there was still ample pressure on the ball joint but that thing would not have come off if I followed all the other videos ive seen on how to remove the strut. Thank you so much, this tutorial was God sent

This is great, air suspension is nice but if you don't want unreliable suspension coilovers are a great solution that will be a lot cheaper in the long run as long as you protect them from rust

Great review. Will be doing the conversion in the near future. How do you like the ride with the coilovers compared to the airmatic suspension?

The BC coilovers ride surprisingly close compared to the airmatic suspension at the settings I have (middle 16 clicks). You do feel the road a little bit more on the coilovers which is a personal preference of mine, but you can always tweak the dampening to softer settings to get it as close as you can to the airmatic feel.

Hi & thank you for the video. I just watched the video,, & my front end is low. Don't know why. the "airmatic visit shop" light on dash board. I think the compressor is not working. After turning the key over without starting the car, I hear a sound like the compressor trying to come on but doesn't come on.. so I'm asking your advice, should I just get the compressor replaced? it is underneath the passenger side under the hood right? And the next question I had was since the rear suspension has not lowered, can I just switch the front air shocks to BC coils out & and leave the rear the way it is?

All you need to do is pull the fuse F037 from the driver side dash fuse box. (Literally on the side of the dash when you open the driver side door). It eliminates the airmatic warnings and visit workshop warnings etc.. I don't recommend taking the negative terminal off of the battery, but it might help. So do that at your own risk if you choose to. Hope this helps!

initialB 240 I would've loved to kept the airmatic suspension on this vehicle, but the suspension has been fixed before. Problems just kept eventually coming back so we decided to just go ahead and convert it to be done with it. It's been great so far!

Here's a crazy question can you just replace the front with BC and then leave the Rears airmatic bags?

redbaron2448 I don't see why not. Never really thought about it. I suggest being prepared to do the rears regardless because they will eventually go out if they're not already.

The compressor is located on the driver side behind the front fender. You'll see it in this video at 2:50. I didn't remove the compressor at the time of shooting the video because I was rushing to just swap out the suspension pieces, but I eventually came back and removed it later. Since you hear the compressor trying to turn on but doesn't air up, I'm not sure if it would be a faulty compressor or a leak somewhere that's causing the front to be low. This is the reason why I replaced everything and just converted to a coilover suspension setup to avoid the hassle of future problems. I'm not sure if you can swap just the fronts since I never tried it myself.

Hello friend, did it work for you to change only the 2 in front and leave the airbags in the back? I have the same question. I want to know if I can only change the rear suspension and leave the airbags in front.

Hey quick question is your e500 awd or rwd, I have the same coil but my mechanic said they won't fit, and I found out it says for rwd. So I'm curious would I have to get ones for awd e500, or just use this same method?

Hey thx you for the video. But how do you block and bypass the sensor module so that there are no warning in the instrument cluster? Please advice really need this info

I just put the fuse back in, and push the steering wheel button when it comes up. Says off until I start car again. There is a module you can buy, but it is not very easy to install, and you have to run a power wire into the fuse box. Kinda hokey, and I have one, but did not want to be cutting into my Mercedes's wiring. Wasted the extra 300 dollars on that module with my kit. Lesson learned.

rex jonhdeer yes I'm installing both front and rear. This is a 2-part video. Part 1 is front and part 2 I did the rears.

On the circled picture 7:11min lower control arm did you take off the bottom bolt or that top hex nut Bolt?

Nevermind I got it without taking the bolt out

redbaron2448 I took off the bottom nut connected to the lower control arm. Yea you don't have to remove this, but it makes it a breeze to remove/replace the full air strut because of the wiggle room it creates and only takes 30 seconds to remove, if that.

Brian Money Hey bud, the coilovers are application/vehicle specific coilovers for the E500. You can't just get any other ones.

Brian Money some designs are going to be different even though they are for the E500. For example if you watched both parts of my video, in part 2 I showed that I had to purchase rear control arms made for an E320/E350 with a coilspring suspension to make the BC Coilovers work. Other companies are very similar to the BC Coilover set up, but not all.

I just call bc racing. They don’t have the kit for 4 matic. They say on you tub they Modified But the kid coming right out the box it does not fit so is your Mercedes a 4 matic

Couldn't agree with you more. All their parts seems to start breaking over 100k miles. This car never gave us any problems until right around 120k. That's when all warranties/extended warranties ended lol.
