I haven't done the m278 specifically but the AMG m157 is essentially just a bigger m278. Here is my video on the m157: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N0uGo6g4TFQ.html
Looking to buy one of these. Does anyone know if all model years of W211 E63s are susceptible to head bolt failure or if it was only the 2007 and 2008 cars?
@@AMGmeister It’s a bit surprising to me that this went on for 4 model years. If I decide to buy one and the owner does not have documentation of head bolt replacement, would you recommend that I just go ahead and replace them? I really don’t want to ruin the M156 motor lol.
I'm glad you did a review on the W211 E63. Hopefully you will continue reviewing AMG's from 2008 to 2014 because I think these are the best AMG's ever built.
@@James-jx4hi what I’ve heard it’s pretty solid barely any issues this year engine is super super reliable I’ve seen with ones 156-250k miles just maintenance regularly and it last
I would still get the E55 W211 AMG E class instead. A very little horsepower difference, more torque and significantly more reliable engine compared to the E63. Still, if you find a decent exsample of this generation AMG E class, you won't make a bad choice.
Their reliability status is starting to go down hill. Trust me. I bought one in December and have spent more then the value of the car in repairs and only to be told piston rings have gone. Supercharger also blew too. As with any car, try and buy one with good history. Learn from my mistake. I would rather get the E63 to be honest. You will not notice much difference in power. They';re both animals and can take most that attempt to challenge them.
@@HarryFromTheNorthSide your name took me by surprise a little, my best friend has the same name but he does not know any thing about cars , he very well versed in girls 😹😹
@@foxtrotwhiskey874 ps I am a e55 fan boy. One of my favorite cars . As a mechanic I know it's full potential.that car can make more power for less money than the e63 because the 63 has a naturally aspirated engine.any engine with a forced induction system (supercharger/turbo) can be modded or tuned easy for more power without having to add any bolt on mods to it.thats the beauty in owning a e55 amg or any boosted car.the 63 Is a monster but it's power upgrades are limited due to it being naturally aspirated
@@HarryFromTheNorthSide you know what you are talking about and thats great. i got turned off by cultish attitude of e55 fanboys and i i got a E63 instead knowing the shortcomings of M156 engine. i do not like to mod, i prefer all my cars stock. and you cant go wrong w/ the sound and NA 500hp. for weekend cursing my stock E63 does the job for me.
@@foxtrotwhiskey874 the 63 is a beast and sounds very nice. But as a mechanic I like to tinker with my cars engines,so the e55 is a better car for my hands on skills.i love both cars, but I prefer the e55 over the 63 due to its potential in upgradable power.
This is the very car that made me fall in love with AMG when I was much younger. Aggressive but still classy styling, N/A jewel of a V8, and it's a subtle AMG, relatively speaking... Again, marvelous video.
Very informative video and the information laid out perfectly. As a W211 E63 owner myself , i faced head-bolt issue with my vehicle, those who are interesting in getting one should aways check if the M156 engine has the updated head-bolts or not, without them the engine is basically like a ticking time bomb and its a very labour intensive and expensive job to replace.Happy motoring.
I was just looking into one of these in the used market. The one im looking at only has 40k miles and is maniatiacally mantained, but i was waiting on this video bc of the insight this guy gives you on amgs. Great video as always, i love this channel
DO NOT HESITATE. I had a 2009 for seven years and it was completely flawless. Absolutely perfect daily driver. Since then I’ve had a 2016 CLS63 and a 2019 E63 and I still remember my W211 incredibly fondly.
The e55 same Era as the one in this video was your best bang for buck, and it had way more potential and could easily be made way faster than this e63.mercedes e55 Amg supercharged all the way
Hi, love your videos👍 Do you have any info on the r129 sl60? I have one here in the uk and detailed information on build/specs/variations is a bit thin on the ground. Cheers. It’s surprisingly quick for an old car so I’m interested in the work that amg carried out.
I have a Grey 2009 with 59,000 miles. P1, P2, and P30 with Distronic and Parktronic. I also installed the triangle in the trunk for euro spec cars, front german license plate, two small electric fans for the coolers, racing diff clutch plates for the posi, and a catch can. Car has no leaks and everything works like new. I just drive it a couple of times a year and it's paid for! I recently replaced all four rotors, e brake shoes, and pads. I have serviced the trans twice at home and installed a green gates serpentine belt with billet idlers. Cams look fine for now but a swap to m159 buckets and new head studs are in the future..
This only video I’ve seen stating the correct reason WHY it’s 63 instead of 62 because its 62xx CC’s not just because it’s a throwback to old Mercedes’.
In terms of reliability, which one is more of a headache? It seems with the bushing and the transmission plates, the E63 is more costly. Not to mention the engine of course
Hey Amg Meister, I wanted you to know that your videos pushed me to buy a w211 e63 amg. I’ve always loved the w211 chassis and I found one that checked all the boxes. Keep up the good work, love detailed videos on these older AMG’s
Great video. I have owned my E63 for 2 years 30,000 and I have not regretted it. Though I did recently replace the engine mounts and also resolved a few leaks as stated in the video im still happy with my baby. Mine has all the options for the US market minus the distronic so after seeing that im happy with the specs the original owner chose for me. Keep putting out great content your work has not gone unnoticed. Cheers
One of the best reviews I've ever heard. I like how he tells the difference between the metrics and standard US measurements. And he's very detail oriented thank you
Woww super low miles… almost too low lol Is it possible for a vehicle to be ‘under driven’ as far as miles are concerned? Does not driving it enough, also cause mechanical issues?
Good question. I would say mechanical issues could arise if the car sits for very long periods of time such as 2 years plus. The gas is going to go bad and cause issues, tires will flat spot etc. However, if you have evidence such as insurance records that the car was insured every year and driven even just a little then there is absolutely no issue with super low mile cars.
@@AMGmeister Good point, i only ask because when i would drive my clk63 around at least once or twice a week, i never had any issues with it but when i would let it sit for 3 weeks to a month+ straight, is when i started having problems w it. First, the alternator went out, then the rear main seal started leaking, then the motor mounts went out! Lol The mercedes Tech says, i need to drive it more often. “ “AMG’s” dont like to be parked” 😅 I believe him lol
Great video! I bought an 08 E63 with 81K. I've put about 13K on it in three years, and I look forward to driving it every day. The sound of the M156 never gets old. I've had no problems with the head bolts. I did have a front airmatic shock fail on me ($1,300 fix) and I replaced the front and rear pads and rotors myself, but besides that just ordinary oil changes every 7,500 or so. Just a fantastic looking car.
@@emileanobecerra8000 Honestly, I don't drive it in the snow because it has summer tires on it and I also have a Tahoe. But, yes, I can see it getting all over the place in the snow if you aren't careful.
So far the most well equiped w211 i have seen was a E400 cdi from 2004, it had distronic, and solar panel on the roof, inside it was so well equiped, like every fucking option But the most well equiped mercedes in general was an bulet proof W221, S600 every fucking thing you can get in the s class was in there
My wrenching skills were far less when I 1st got my m272 E coupe a while ago, and I now cry myself to slept night for not shopping for m113k e55's instead. Given how many things I had to go thru on the car, maintenance (aside from the price of suspension parts) would've been possibly less on the e55. My almost $500 rear window regulator makes up for the difference I'm sure. If you're thinking of a 211, don't hesitate and back out like I did before we're all forced into EV's.
As I'm watching this video I have been contemplating about buying one of these, 101k miles the 08 6.3 AMG . Yet the with the multi piece wheels and with the graphite colors. Will watch for leaks on gaskets and valve covers
Incredibly high quality video, very informing and entertaining! Have been looking for a car channel like this forever. Mind me asking what music you used in the video? 😄
Where did you get that it had to be badged as a 63 because of tax reasons, that sounds like a myth going around. The C36 engine is bigger than 3.6L but it's badged as C36. And the new engine is badged as a 63 even though it's a 4.0L. And that's not because it's turbocharged because the B200 turbo was badged as a B200, and the E55 is supercharged but still badged as an E55. No, it's like what Clarkson said in Top Gear, they badged it like that for tradition.
It’s from a press release, I’ll get you the link. Remember, I’m not talking about the badge on the back of the car “E63”, Mercedes is free to call the car whatever they want. I’m talking about the badge on the side of the car that says 6.3L. Mercedes was not allowed to put 6.2L on the side of the car because in Germany you are taxed based on every 100ccs of engine size and it always rounds up. So with 6208ccs they had to put 6.3L which works anyways to tribute the M100 engine of the 1960s. This was one of the only times that Mercedes put badges on a car that state the engine displacement in litres. The E55 just said ‘v8 kompressor’ and the newer E63s say ‘v8 biturbo’.
